NATO chief tells Russia to get arms out of Ukraine

Posted: at 10:48 am

ROME: NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg warned Wednesday (Feb 25) that any attempt to expand territory held by separatists in Ukraine would be "unacceptable" and told Russia to withdraw 1,000 items of military equipment from its neighbour's territory.

Speaking after meeting Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, the alliance's secretary general expressed cautious optimism about the prospects of a shaky truce holding between pro-Russian rebels and Ukrainian forces.

"I welcome the recent indications of reduced fighting in Ukraine and we hope that the ceasefire now is finally going to be respected," he said. "It is important that all parties fully respect the ceasefire and withdraw heavy weapons.

"Russia has transferred in recent months over 1,000 pieces of equipment - tanks, artillery and advanced air defence systems. They have to withdraw this equipment and they have to stop supporting separatists."

The NATO boss added: "It is important that all parties now respect the provisions of the Minsk agreement. And any attempt to expand further the territory held by separatists would be a clear violation of the Minsk agreement and the ceasefire. And it would be unacceptable to the international community."

Stoltenberg's comments came as Ukraine's military announced it was starting the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the frontline of the conflict. The withdrawal of all weapons over a calibre of 100mm is meant to contribute to a buffer zone between the two warring sides of between 50 and 140 kilometres, depending on the range of the arms.

Under the terms of a peace plan signed by Kiev and the rebels this month, the withdrawal is meant to be completed in 14 days. The rebels insist they have begun to pull back their heavy weapons but OSCE monitors on the ground have so far been unable to verify the claims.

Rand Paul: GOP needs to care about more than gun rights

Posted: at 10:47 am

The Republican Party needs to prove it values rights like freedom of speech and the right to a speedy trial as much as it values gun rights, Rand Paul said Friday.

"We do a great job defending the Second Amendment, and everybody knows that," the Kentucky senator and potential presidential candidate said at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). "But we have to defend the whole Bill of Rights."

"To defend the Second amendment, you have to defend the Fourth Amendment," he continued. "You need the First Amendment to protect the Second Amendment... The Fifth, the Sixth -- we should have speedy trials in our country."

Paul cited the case of Kalief Browder, an African-American teenager accused of a crime who spent three years in jail without even getting a trial. While behind bars, he tried to commit suicide several times.

Browder "lives in that 'other America' that Martin Luther King talked about," Paul said.

If the GOP wants to appeal to minorities and other voters beyond its core conservative base, he said, it must defend the entire Bill of Rights. The party should make the case that "big government's not only a problem as far as regulation and taxes... [but also] with sometimes not giving justice to those who deserve it."

Paul, the most libertarian-leaning of the potential GOP 2016 candidates, has long stressed the need for the party to expand its appeal. At CPAC, Paul also defended his non-interventionist foreign policy positions. He argued that the U.S. should be less involved in foreign affairs in order to build up a stronger defense.

"When I look at government, I think the most important thing we do at the federal level is defend our country, without question," he stressed. "I envision an America with a national defense unparalleled... and unencumbered by nation building."

Phil Robertson Thinks STDS Are The Revenge Of The Hippies

NeNe Leakes And Kim Zolciak Want To Film A Real Housewives Of Atlanta Spin-Off | Home

February 27, 2015 04:00 PM by Stephanie Gustafson

If you or somebody you know has suffered from a sexually transmitted disease, you can place all of the blame for this predicament on the hippies. At least, thats what Phil Robertson thinks! TheDuck Dynastyrecently received the Andrew Breitbart Defender of the First Amendment Award at the Conservative Political Action Conference and his acceptance speech is already causing quite the stir on Facebook!

Phil Robertson managed to keep a low profile for the last few months of 2014, but that has all changed now that the reality star has once again been highlighted as a conservative role model. No longer content to sit back and keep his mouth shut, Phil is once again trying his best to get a rise out of his many haters on Twitter. Thus far, hes proven incredibly successful, having caused plenty of outrage with his long, rambling speech at CPAC.

Grateful to be recognized for his commitment to First Amendment rights, Phil used his acceptance speech as another excuse to talk at length about sexual sin. He advised his fans, Youre disease-free and shes disease free, you marry, you keep your sex right there. You wont get sick from a sexually transmitted disease.

This is all pretty normal stuff for Phil and really, for the entireDuck Dynasty clan. But he certainly didnt stop there. Things began to get bizarre when the reality star mused about beatniks and hippies, claiming that the 110 million Americans with sexually transmitted diseases were the revenge of the hippies. According to Phil, the age of rock n roll was the beginning of the end.

What do you think of Phil Robertsons latest tirade? Feel free to share your opinion in the comments section below!

No, a Cryptocurrency Can't Fix a Broken Economy

Posted: at 10:46 am

Auroracoin, the digital currency given as a free hand-out to every resident of Iceland, was supposed to be a a salvo for a country rankled by a broken financial system. It was heralded as the beginning of hyper-localized cryptocurrencies; it became the second-largest cryptocurrency before it even launched, valued at half a billion dollars at its peak.

And then it fell apart. A failure that's a blow to the entire crypto community, because as outlandish as it was, Auroracoin was launched in the right place at the right time, and it still crash-landed.

That right time was March 2014. When a mysterious entrepreneur proposed a bold plan to "airdrop" digital money upon the masses, the political climate in Iceland was ideal for introducing a radical idea.

Iceland was still reeling from the 2008 financial nuclear meltdown. Its largest private banks collapsed and the krna plummeted in value. It made the recession in the US that year look like the roaring 20s. Six years later, despite a rebound, the aftershocks were still harsh. Tight capital controls initially adopted to bolster the krna remained in place, limiting what Icelanders could do with their money.

Enter Auroracoin! It wasn't just a weird new novelty currency, it was a political statement: Creator Baldur Friggjar Odinsson wanted to "break the shackles of the fiat currency system in Iceland" by urging the country to adopt his coin. "The people of Iceland are being sacrificed at the altar of a flawed financial system," his manifesto clucked. It leaned on public sentiment that people deserved better than the limpid krna, that there needed to be some reparation for the immense damage done in the financial crisis.

Of course, "Baldur Friggjar Odinsson" isn't a real person. Like Satoshi Nakamoto, the furtive creator of Bitcoin, Odinsson is a pseudonym, a mashup of references to Nordic gods. Like Nakamoto, Odinsson concocted his own cryptocurrency, but its hooks were substantially different than Bitcoin. It was squarely aimed at one local population. It would start out 50% pre-mined by Odinsson, who would distribute a set number of coins in stages to each citizen of Iceland by using the country's Kennitala identification system. Everyone would get 31.8 coins just for being Icelandic.

It was also the right media moment. Auroracoin was catching a ride on a hype machine at its most powerful. The outlook was wildly optimistic, and the amped-up speculation skyrocketed the value of the digital coins.

But the swarming interest soon vanished.

Cryptocurrencies are notoriously volatile, but the popping of Auroracoin's hype bubble was especially hard and quick. Auroracoin lost over 50% of its value within a few days of its March 25, 2014 launch and never recovered. A month after it was gifted to them, less than 10% of Icelanders had picked up their free money, and the price fell and flatlined. It's now worth a paltry $.016 USD, down from over $30 at its highest. Like the northern lights it was named after, Auroracoin's brief rise was intense and ephemeral, a strange and likely unrepeatable phenomenon.
