Why The Proposed Security Certification For Bitcoin Matters
Posted: at 12:46 am
I have said before on these pages that if Bitcoin is to fulfill its potential of shaking up payment and exchange systems in a manner that benefits the consumer and entrepreneur over existing financial institutions and practices, then some form of universal regulation of the businesses surrounding it must evolve. I understand the opposition to that concept voiced by many Bitcoin enthusiasts and early adopters; after all, regulation by central governments, by definition, puts the decentralized nature which is at the core of the concept of a peer to peer currency at risk.
The fact remains, though, that for the vast majority of people the stories of theft and deception related to digital currencies are what they most often see, hear and read. That may be unfair given that cyber crime in the realm of conventional currency is much more common and yet much less reported, but it is also undeniable. In those circumstances the wider use of Bitcoin that most desire simply will not happen. It is fine to say that individuals should do their own due diligence when dealing with companies in the alternative currency world, but the reality is that for most the issues surrounding cyber security are far too complex for them to understand or, at the very least the they are not motivated to allocate the time that such an understanding would demand.
Given that, the answer had to come from within the Bitcoin community in the form of some kind of security standard and certification that people could view as a reassurance that at least some minimum standard of security had been met. If the community shows a willingness and ability to self regulate the prospects of truly restrictive, even destructive, regulations by central governments around the world will be reduced. Two weeks ago, when the Cryptocurrency Certification Consortium(C4) unveiled their draft proposal for a set of standard rules covering key and seed generation and proof of reserve along with most other areas of security, Bitcoin moved a step closer to that goal. The full draft of the proposal can be found here.
I make no claim to be an expert on cyber security, so I do not have an opinion on the technical aspects of these proposals, or at least not one that counts for anything, but this is a start. It is in the nature of Bitcoin that any standard that is eventually decided on cannot be imposed on companies in the field. It must be voluntary and would likely not be universal, but anything that gives potential holders of Bitcoin a sense of security is surely a good thing. There is a reason that the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation exists. It doesn't mean that your advisor is any smarter, nor does it guarantee that he or she is 100% honest and will put your interests first, but it does mean that they have met a certain minimum standard. When it comes to reassuring consumers, perception is reality.
Of course, creating a warm and fuzzy feeling isn't the only thing needed if Bitcoin adoption is to grow. The extreme volatility that has been experienced this last couple of years is also a problem. To some extent though, if security concerns can be reduced and thus more people become regular users of Bitcoin, that volatility will inevitably decline. Liquidity enhances stability.
The words regulation and even standard seem to produce a visceral response from some cryptocurrency enthusiasts, but in this instance, when the proposal comes from within the community, and adherence to a set of standards would be voluntary, it is possible that it could be a solution to Bitcoins two biggest problems. These proposals may not be perfect and no doubt some refinement will take place before anything is adopted, but to dismiss the concept of standardized security protocols is a short sighted mistake as this could be an important step towards the wider adoption of Bitcoin.

How astronauts exercise on the ISS

In February, our attention turns to romantic matters of the heart. As American Heart Month, this month is also a time to focus on heart health and a perfect excuse to start working out to improve your physical fitness. Astronauts on the International Space Station are working to keep their hearts healthy too, and at the same time they are generating data to advance knowledge of health and fitness in space and on Earth.
Astronauts exercise regularly while in space to maintain muscle, bone, and cardiovascular health and fitness and to remain fit and strong enough to perform physically demanding tasks such as extravehicular activity. Scientists have frequently measured the effectiveness of that exercise during short spaceflights.
Now, researchers have assessed exercise on longer spaceflights with the help of astronauts on the space station, measuring their VO2 peak before, during and after missions of four to five months.
[STORY: ISS adding more spaceship parking]
Widely accepted as the best measure of cardiovascular fitness, VO2peak, also called VO2max, is a measure of peak oxygen uptake. That represents the highest amount of oxygen your body can use to produce energy during exercise. Oxygen is used by cells to provide the energy to perform work and a more aerobically fit persons cells take up and use more oxygen, explains Meghan Downs, senior researcher at NASAs Exercise Physiology Laboratory.
VO2peak is measured using a bicycle test, with astronauts starting at low intensity and gradually increasing pedaling resistance over a short period of time until they could no longer pedal the bike. The tests were performed three months before launch to the space station; after approximately 15 days in space; every 30 days throughout flight; and one, 10 and 30 days following return to Earth.
According to the results, published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, VO2peak decreased by an average of 17 percent by day 15 in space, but then gradually increased during flight. Most astronauts never recovered their preflight V02peak levels during the mission, but a few were able to maintain or even improve VO2peak during flight with frequent bouts of high intensity exercise.

Moon Space Law: Legal Debate Swirls Around Private Lunar Ventures
Posted: at 12:46 am
A recent action by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is stirring up some moon dust in a legal debate about private companies setting up shop on the moon.
In late 2014, the FAA's Office of the Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation (AST) responded favorably to a Bigelow Aerospace's "payload review" request. This query related to commercial development of the moon. Some view the verdict as a necessary step toward creating a legal framework for businesses to set up shop on the moon. But it's also clear more legal conversations are in the offing.
Without a legal framework, proponents of lunar business say that investors won't develop the financial and technical wherewithal to build industry on the moon. There's need for assurance from the United States government that private-sector activities will be approved and protected when they aim for the moon. The FAA/AST decision also involved other federal agencies, including NASA, the Department of State and the Department of Defense. Bigelow Aerospace was assured that the AST would use its launch-licensing authority, as best it can, to protect private sector assets on the moon. The intent is to provide a safe environment for U.S. firms to conduct peaceful commercial activities on the moonwithout fear of harmful interference from other AST licensees.
"This response is a modest yet important initial step toward creating an environment that will encourage both today's and tomorrow's entrepreneurs to focus their resources on the moon," said Mike Gold, Director of Washington, D.C., operations and business growth for Bigelow Aerospace, LLC.
Bigelow Aerospace is keen on deploying, testing and utilizing the firm's expandable habitats in low Earth orbit before landing them on the moon, Gold told Space.com.
"Decisions such as the AST's payload review response help to encourage continued investment by Bigelow Aerospace in lunar development, and while a great deal of work remains to be done, we believe that a private sector lunar settlement could be established much more quickly and affordably than most would suspect," Gold said.
The FAA/AST action creates a number of issues that need addressing, said Michael Listner, the founder and principal of the firm Space Law and Policy Solutions, based in New Hampshire.
"Based on what I've read in media reports, it appears that while the FAA has taken steps to support Bigelow's future establishment of lunar modules on the moon, it also recognizes that Title 51, Chapter 509 (Commercial Space Launch Act) as currently amended limits their ability to fully endorse those plans through the grant of a launch license," Listner said.
Listner said the path forward is two-fold:

A Chat with Sonia Van Meter, Woman Preparing for a One-Way Trip to Mars
Posted: at 12:45 am
Sonia Van Meter is the managing director of Stanford Caskey, a national Democratic opposition research firm. She's also one of 100 candidates selected by Mars One for Martian colonization in 2025. Many are skeptical of Mars One's prospects; many (like Buzz Aldrin) hope the mission succeeds. Regardless, Mars is the future that Sonia is preparing for, and we spoke on the phone last week.
I'm so excited to talk to you about this. I'm so jealous.
Oh, I'm so glad to get to talk to you, too. So much of what I've been asked is how I could possibly leave my husband and family, how I could stand to be such a horrible woman. I would love for this story to be told with a hint of a feminist perspective for once.
There are plenty of other women in the Mars 100, right?
49 other women!
Do you think they're all getting this reaction?
I think a few of them probably have. Although there are a lot of single women, and I don't know how many of the other women have children who are young.
There are certainly plenty of men and women who are married, anyway. But I might be one of the candidates who has younger children, even thoughnot to be coldmy children are stepchildren, and they do have two biological parents who will take care of them. And in 2024 they're going to be 21 and 24. It's not like I'm leaving infants to twist in the wind. As an ancillary parent, I feel like it's incumbent upon me to demonstrate to them that there's no reason why they shouldn't pursue their dreams.
What did it feel like when you found out you were part of the Mars 100?
