NSA: Snowden leaks hurt ability to track terrorists – CNN.com
Posted: at 12:48 am
"I would say that it has had a material impact in our ability to generate insights as to what counterterrorism, what terrorist groups around the world are doing," Adm. Michael Rogers told a group gathered in Washington for a cybersecurity summit hosted by the New America think tank.
READ: Jeb Bush defends NSA dragnet
"Do you have new blind spots that you didn't have prior to the revelation," moderator and CNN National Security correspondent Jim Sciutto asked.
"Have I lost capability that we had prior to the revelations? Yes," Rogers responded. "Anyone who thinks this has not had an impact I would say doesn't know what they're talking about."
Snowden himself remains free in Russia. A film about him won an Academy Award on Sunday evening.
Rogers says he knew U.S. infrastructure would likely come under cyber-attack on his watch, but the target of Sony Pictures was a surprise.
"I fully expected, sadly in some ways, that in my time as the commander of United States Cyber Command the Department of Defense would be tasked with attempting to defend the nation against those kind of attacks," he said. "I didn't realize that it would be against a motion picture company, to be honest."
North Korea is widely believed to be behind the hack in response to Sony's production of the film "The Interview," which depicts a comedic plot to kill leader Kim Jong-un
Rogers declined to respond to a question if the United States was behind a retaliatory online attack that took down North Korea's Internet access.
When asked which nations had the ability to strike U.S. cyber interests Rogers declined to provide assessments of most countries.

Snowden: Spy Agencies Screwed All of Us in Hacking Crypto Keys
Posted: at 12:48 am
NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden didnt mince words during a Reddit Ask Me Anything session on Monday when he said the NSA and the British spy agency GCHQ had screwed all of us when it hacked into the Dutch firm Gemalto to steal cryptographic keys used in billions of mobile SIM cards worldwide.
When the NSA and GCHQ compromised the security of potentially billions of phones (3g/4g encryption relies on the shared secret resident on the sim), Snowden wrote in the AMA, they not only screwed the manufacturer, they screwed all of us, because the only way to address the security compromise is to recall and replace every SIM sold by Gemalto.
Gemalto is one of the leading makers of SIM cards used in billions of mobile phones around the world to secure the communications of telecom customers of AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint and more than 400 other wireless carriers in 85 countries. Stealing the crypto keys essentially allows the spy agencies to wiretap and decipher encrypted phone communications at will without the assistance of telecom carriers or the oversight of a court or government. The keys also allow the agencies to decrypt previously intercepted messages they hadnt been able to crack.
But in stealing the keys with the aim of targeting the communications of specific customers, the spy agencies undermine the security of billions of other customers.
Our governments should never be weighing the equities in an intelligence gathering operation such that a temporary benefit to surveillance regarding a few key targets is seen as more desireable than protecting the communications of a global system Snowden wrote.
As The Intercept reported last week, the spy agencies targeted employees of the Dutch firm, reading their siphoned emails and scouring their Facebook posts to obtain information that would help the agencies hack the employees. Once on employee systems, the spy agencies planted backdoors and other tools to give them a persistent foothold on the companys network. We believe we have their entire network, the author of a PowerPoint slide, leaked by Snowden to journalist Glenn Greenwald, boasted about the hack.
Snowden commented on the story after being asked what he thought about recent revelations from Kaspersky Lab that it had uncovered a spy module, believed to belong to the NSA, designed for hacking the firmware of hard drives. Snowden said the firmware hacking was significant but even more significant was the theft of the crypto keys.
[A]lthough firmware exploitation is nasty, Snowden responded, its at least theoretically reparable: tools could plausibly be created to detect the bad firmware hashes and re-flash good ones. This isnt the same for SIMs, which are flashed at the factory and never touched again.
Julian Sanchez of the Cato Institute shared Snowdens sentiments about the crypto theft.
We hear a great deal lately about the value of information sharing in cybersecurity, he wrote in a blog post about the hack of Gemalto. Well, heres a case where NSA had information that the technology American citizens and companies rely on to protect their communications was not only vulnerable, but had in fact been compromised.[T]his is one more demonstration that proposals to require telecommunications providers and device manufacturers to build law enforcement backdoors in their products are a terrible, terrible idea. As security experts have rightly insisted all along, requiring companies to keep a repository of keys to unlock those backdoors makes the key repository itself a prime target for the most sophisticated attackerslike NSA and GCHQ.

FOX 5's Emily Miller gets DC gun carry permit approved
Posted: at 12:47 am
WASHINGTON -
Just seven months ago, D.C. was the only place in the country that did not allow anyone to legally carry a gun outside the home. A federal court ruled that violated the Second Amendment. So now, the police department is issuing carry permits to a few people.
I have been doing a series to show how the nation's capital has abided by the federal court ruling.
Watch Part one of the series: How to get a gun carry permit in DC: http://bit.ly/1pMUOzV
Watch Part two of the series: How to prove a 'special' danger to get a gun carry permit in DC: http://bit.ly/1vwHvGd
To remind you of the background, the City Council passed a law in the fall that allowed for handguns to be carried in public, but the bar was set very high for a permit. You have to prove you have so-called special dangers -- specific and current threats against you or your property.
Any day now, the judge will rule on whether the city is in contempt of court for writing a new law that is still unconstitutional.
I applied for a permit as soon as the law went into effect. At the end of October, I went to the firearms registration office at police headquarters.
Milton Agurs, who works in the office, explained to me that few people will pass muster to get a permit.
"Your life is in danger, your family or your property, or you have the type of business you carry large sums of money, jewelry. Under those circumstances, that's why you get conceal carry in the District of Columbia," he said.

Ward amendment would OK sawed-off shotguns, silencers
Posted: at 12:47 am
PHOENIX (AP) A Republican lawmaker who has been pushing a series of guns rights bills pulled out a new proposal Monday, tacking an amendment onto a minor bill that will legalize sawed-off shotguns, silencers and nunchucks in Arizona.
The state already has some of the strongest Second Amendment protections in the country, but the Republican-dominated Legislature is working to add more breathing room for gun owners.
The amendment by Sen. Kelli Ward, R-Lake Havasu City, adds to a bill designed to restore a persons gun rights if a judge sets aside a guilty conviction.
We have a right to keep and bear arms and really that right shouldnt be infringed, she said.
The amendment legalizes devices that muffle guns, rifles and shotguns with barrels less than 16 inches and nunchucks weapons made from two sticks or rods connected by a rope or chain.
Ward said the idea for her amendment came from a pastor in the western Arizona community of Topock who wants to own nunchucks.
Critics said the amendment is overly broad and avoided scrutiny by never going through committee hearings.
Rep. Steve Farley, D-Tucson, said Wards amendment makes the bill less about helping people and more about legalizing weapons prohibited under Arizona law.
It is only going to further our reputation on The Daily Show here in Arizona that we couldnt find a way of banning driving while texting while at the same time making legal silencers, sawed-off shotguns and nunchucks.
Rep. Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills, said he sees the problem with sawed-off shotguns, but not silencers.

Shealy tells sister's story during domestic violence debate
Posted: at 12:47 am
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - As debate dragged into a second week on a bill to toughen sentences for convicted domestic abusers in South Carolina and take away their guns, state Sen. Katrina Shealy made the issue personal with the story of her sister who was abused for years by her husband before he finally shot himself to death.
"When you make it personal, people understand," said Shealy, who got her sister's permission over the weekend to tell her story. "I bet there are a lot of people out there who have similar stories."
Shealy, the state Senate's only woman, took the floor of the chamber Tuesday and for the first time publicly recounted the story of her sister's 30-year abusive marriage which ended when her brother-in-law killed himself on the hood of his wife's car just days after she left. He had written several suicide notes outlining different scenarios, including one with him walking to her job and killing her before turning the gun on himself, the Lexington Republican said.
The Senate adjourned again Tuesday without voting on the bill. More debate is expected Wednesday, and Senate Judiciary Chairman Larry Martin hopes the bill will come to a vote before the Senate leaves early Wednesday because of the threat of snow in the Upstate.
"I don't know why this has taken so long," said Martin, R-Pickens. "I know there are strong passions when someone thinks their Second Amendment rights are at stake."
The main sticking point is a provision that would prevent people convicted of domestic violence from owning a gun for 10 years. Several amendments watering down or eliminating the provision for certain convictions have slowed debate.
The bill also defines three degrees of domestic violence. Penalties would increase with the violence of the attack.
Shealy said her sister's abuse was well known in their family at the time. She occasionally came around with black eyes and missed family gatherings without a reason. Shealy and other relatives would buy her clothes, and her husband would cut them to ribbons if he thought she owned too many things.
"Why didn't she leave? She was scared of him," Shealy said. "He had threatened to kill her and her children."
Shealy's brother-in-law killed himself 16 years ago. But she said her sister and her adult children still struggle with low self-esteem from his blows and his words.

Snowden's favourite Linux – Tails – rushes sec-fix version to market
Posted: at 12:47 am
Tails, the secure live-boot Linux made famous by Edward Snowden, has had a major revision release to Version 1.3.
The new version, released after testing since February 12, combines various security fixes with new apps and simplified install, the developers say.
The developers want to kill off the previous version, Tails 1.2.3, as soon as possible, with a list of 14 security issues covering everything from the Tor browser and its network security services (NSS) through to a sudo privilege escalation bug.
The new version of the Tor browser restricts reads and writes to a limited number of folders, and to help manage passwords, Tails 1.2.3 includes the Keyringer command line utility.
To make manual installation easier, the Mac and Linux installs no longer need isohybrid command support, and Tails now bundles GnuPG 2, which improves its support for OpenPGP smartcards.
Other major security fixes in Tails 1.3 include fixes to xdg-utils, the Jasper JPEG-2000 image manipulation library, a fix for the underlying Debian glibc implementation (eglibc), Open JDK, Unzip, the krb5 Kerberos library, Ruby 1.9.1, xorg-server, Libre Office, dbus, Bind 9, and the e2fsprogs file system utilities.
