A 22-YEAR-OLD with a history of violence has been named by police as the suspect behind the Danish shooting rampage that left two dead and several more wounded.

Omar El-Hussein had a criminal record which included convictions for weapon offences.
He was gunned down by police close to a Copenhagen train station in the early hours of Sunday morning after he opened fire on them.
Police believe he was responsible for attacks on a cafe and a deadly assault on a synagogue.
His killing spree is believed to have been inspired by the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack in France last month.
Danish investigators currently do not suspect El-Hussein had visited any overseas jihadist training camps.
Investigator Joergen Skov said no one else was involved in the two attacks in which one man was shot in the head near a synagogue and another killed at a freedom of speech event.

Danish shooter had gangland past
Posted: at 12:49 am
The suspected gunman killed by police after shooting attacks against a free speech event and outside a Copenhagen synagogue was 22 years old and had a background in criminal gangs, police said Sunday.
The suspect was born in Denmark and had a criminal record, including violence and weapons offences, Copenhagen police said. They didnt release his name.
A Danish film maker at a panel discussion on blasphemy was killed in the shooting Saturday at the free speech event and a member of the countrys Jewish community was killed outside the synagogue. Five police officers were also wounded. Police believe the suspect carried out both shootings alone.
Denmark has been hit by terror, Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt said. We do not know the motive for the alleged perpetrators actions, but we know that there are forces that want to hurt Denmark. They want to rebuke our freedom of speech.
Jens Madsen, head of Danish intelligence agency PET, said investigators believe the gunman was inspired by Islamic radicalism. (AP)
PET is working on a theory that the perpetrator could have been inspired by the events in Paris. He could also have been inspired by material sent out by (the Islamic State group) and others, Madsen said.
Islamic radicals carried out a massacre at the Charlie Hebdo newsroom in Paris last month, followed by an attack on Jews at a kosher grocery store, taking the lives of 17 victims.
Earlier Sunday, at least two people with handcuffs were taken out by police from an Internet cafe in Copenhagen, Danish media reported. Police spokesman Steen Hansen told The Associated Press that the action was part of the police investigation but declined to give further details.
The Danish Film Institute said the 55-year-old man killed at the free speech event was documentary filmmaker Finn Noergaard.
The institutes chief Henrik Bo Nielsen said he was shocked and angry to find out Noergaard was gunned down while attending a discussion on art and free speech.

Letters to the editor: We must do more to stop terrorists
Posted: at 12:49 am
These people did nothing wrong but exercise their basic rights: the freedom of assembly, freedom of speech and freedom of religion.
It used to be the case that you actually had to blaspheme to become a target of Islamist extremists. Now, apparently, you just have to talk about those principles to arouse the murderous intent of those who disagree with our way of life. Or it could simply be because of who you are, if you happen to be a European Jew, such as the murdered security guard who protected the central synagogue.
While it is difficult to halt lone wolf attacks of this kind, much more must be done by political leaders to tackle this growing threat in Europe. We must move the climate of discussion away from condemnation to action, and how to prevent its recurrence. If we fail to do so, we can expect further attacks to occur. Dr Alan Mendoza, executive director, The Henry Jackson Society
The latest terrorist outrages in Copenhagen, shortly after similar events in Paris, confirm the sad reality of the role that Jews and anti-Semitism play in jihadist ideology and terrorist targeting.
Each terrorist attack raises the need and the demand for further security, and so Jewish communities have reacted by implementing ever more onerous security measures. These have become a sad part of of Jewish life but they should never be regarded as normal.
Across Europe, governments and police have reacted in various ways, with Britain generally regarded as the best in nearly every aspect. UK politicians could not have been stronger in their condemnations of anti-Semitism. But this sits in stark contrast to the profound silence of many civil society groups, who ought to oppose such hatreds but seem paralysed from doing so to any remotely meaningful extent. Mark Gardner, Community Security Trust
Reactions to these sorts of heinous killings must be measured. In its crudest form, an attack such as this craves speculation and hysteria. It is, in a sense, a most ugly form of attention seeking.
We need no more reminders of Islamic States dangerous social media presence. Guessing whether it was a copycat massacre in the style of Charlie Hebdo just fuels Islamic States strategy of saturating the news media.
Let the security services deal with the mechanics of the attack, and let the public focus on what we can do to prevent such monstrous events in the future namely through standing in solidarity against extremism of all kinds with all those who despise such barbarism. Terrorists seek to divide us. Let us not allow that to happen. Nazish Khan, researcher, Quilliam
This week Which? published its annual rail passenger satisfaction survey. The bottom six operators in the survey all serve London, scoring less than 50 per cent overall for passenger satisfaction.

Duck Dynasty's Phil Robertson to Receive Freedom of Speech Award
Posted: at 12:49 am
Phil Robertson's comments about same-sex marriage and LGBT people have earned him a freedom of speech award.
Later this month, the Duck Dynasty star will receive the Andrew Breitbart Defender of the First Amendment Award from Citizens United at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in National Harbor, Md., according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Jesse Jackson: Phil Robertson's comments are "more offensive" than Rosa Parks incident
In 2013, Robertson said in an interview with GQ that he believed homosexuality to be a sin, and later said that he believes AIDS is God's punishment for immorality. In the wake of his comments, A&E suspended him from the network, but lifted the suspension after backlash from many Duck Dynasty fans.
"Even when the entire mainstream media demanded he disavow his beliefs and attempted to have him fired from his own hit show for expressing these beliefs, he stood firm in his faith," Citizens United President David Bossie said, according to THR.
Phil Robertson continues to defend controversial comments
Added Robertson: "When one does not have the freedom to speak out loud and anywhere what one believes, freedom is dead."
He will receive the award on Feb. 27.
Do you think Robertson deserves an award for his remarks?

2 reasons why it's a bad week to be an atheist
Posted: at 12:48 am
On a trade mission to London, Walker was asked at an event whether he believed in evolution. He didn't answer. Published Feb. 17, 2015 at 3:05 p.m.
So what's making atheism tough this week? Two things.
One is Scott Walker. And I don't just say that on principle, though I can see why you might think that given my history in this space.
On a trade mission to London, Walker was asked at an event whether he believed in evolution. He didn't answer.
Local yokel Christian Schneider, a professional Walker apologist given free rein to write at the state's largest daily newspaper, tweeted out that "Walker didn't answer the evolution [question] because he was afraid his answer would be twisted."
Huh? It's a yes or no question. I am not sure how a simple yes or no could be "twisted." Twisting happens when politicians evade simple yes or no questions. Not that answering yes or no is always the end of the story think "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" but a coy decision to "punt," in Walker's own word, on the question just simply invites the pile-on.
In fact, Schneider went on in that tweet: "And coverage of his non-answer proves him right." As if we should be surprised a bunch of people wrangling with the fact that a supposedly battle-tested leader like Walker can't muster a single syllable, affirmative or negative, on a basic question like that. Had Walker offered an actual answer, we might not be talking about this still a week later. This is Politics 101 and not even what sets my atheist bones a-rattling.
No, here's what atheists like me hate about this kind of thing: evolution is not something you "believe" in. It's real; whether you believe in it or not, evolution is a simple fact of reality. People of faith sometimes have to figure out how they reconcile that reality with the things that are actual beliefs, sure, but they don't get to substitute that faith for reality.
The question shouldn't even be asked. I mean, would the moderator have asked about anything else that is settled science? "Pardon me, Gov. Walker, but have you heard this thing about the earth revolving around the sun? What do you make of that?"
Asking the question offers legitimacy to the anti-science, anti-reality position, and that's no good for anybody.

Private Mars One Colony Project Cuts Applicant Pool to 100 …
Posted: at 12:48 am
One hundred people are still in the running to become humanity's first Mars explorers.
The Netherlands-based nonprofit Mars One, which aims to land four pioneers on the Red Planet in 2025 as the vanguard of a permanent colony, has whittled its pool of astronaut candidates down to 100, organization representatives announced Monday (Feb. 16).
More than 202,000 people applied to become Red Planet explorers after Mars One opened the selection process in April 2013. The latest cut came after Mars One medical director Norbert Kraft interviewed the 660 candidates who had survived several previous rounds of culling. [Images of Mars One's Red Planet Colony Project]
"The large cut in candidates is an important step towards finding out who has the right stuff to go to Mars," Mars One co-founder and CEO Bas Lansdorp said in a statement. "These aspiring Martians provide the world with a glimpse into who the modern day explorers will be."
The remaining pool consists of 50 men and 50 women who range in age from 19 to 60, Mars One representatives said. Thirty-nine come from the Americas (including 33 from the United States), 31 from Europe, 16 from Asia, seven from Africa and seven from Australia.
The remaining candidates will next participate in group challenges, to demonstrate their ability and willingness to deal with the rigors of Mars life. After another round of cuts, the finalists will be divided into four-person teams, which will train in a simulated Red Planet outpost.
Eventually, Mars One intends to select 24 astronauts (six four-person teams), who will become full-time employees of the organization and prepare for the Mars colonization mission.
"Being one of the best individual candidates does not automatically make you the greatest team player, so I look forward to seeing how the candidates progress and work together in the upcoming challenges," Kraft said.
Mars One wants to send new four-person crews to the Red Planet every two years or so after the first touchdown, which would take place in 2025. At the moment, there are no plans to bring any of these Mars colonists home to Earth.
Mars One has also mapped out a number of robotic precursor missions to prepare the ground for people. The first of these, which would deliver a lander and orbiter to Mars, is scheduled to blast off in 2018. (Mars One will not build any Mars-bound spacecraft itself, but instead will contract the work out to aerospace companies.)
