Ron Paul: 'I'm not pro-Russian. I'm pro-facts'

The former Texas congressman, who's considered by many to be the face of the libertarian movement, spoke at the International Students for Liberty Conference in Washington, immediately following a video address to the young crowd by National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden.

Paul's remarks contained his usual non-interventionism rhetoric, even when he was challenged by a student from Kiev who asked why Paul hadn't denounced Russian aggression against Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea.

"Crimea is not exactly a foreign country, according to the Russians. But I'm neutral on that," the former presidential candidate argued.

"I don't take a pro-Russian stand. I don't defend what they do," he continued, adding that he thinks all foreign entities, including the United States, NATO and Europeans, should not be involved. "And get the Russians out."

"I'm not pro-Putin, I'm not pro-Russian," he also said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin. "I'm pro-facts"

Paul blasted other foreign entanglements by the U.S. government, including the fight against ISIS. But, remaining ideologically pure, he argued individuals should have the freedom to go fight for what they believe in.

"Does that mean we shouldn't have a moral concern? No. I would make sure that it's legal for anybody here who wants to go and fight on either side in any war, go to it," he said.

While Paul's stances are largely cheered at gatherings like the one he spoke at Friday night, they're otherwise lampooned by wider audiences and stray from positions from his own son, who's long made clear that he and his father don't agree on everything.

But as Rand Paul, who's scheduled to speak at the same conference Saturday night via video, moves closer to a potential presidential bid, his father's comments attract further scrutiny and get attention in the media.

In a light-hearted moment, the moderator at the event asked Ron Paul if his son was among his top three favorites for the Republican presidential nomination.

Paul takes page from Clinton playbook

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is adopting an old tactic of Hillary Clinton's, making a habitofworking across the aisle ahead of a presidential election.

Paul, a likely presidential candidate in 2016, has sponsored bills with Democratic colleagues on topics ranging from criminal justice reform to fiscal oversight of the Pentagon, apparently in an effort to broaden his appeal.

He could be helped in this regard by his overall worldview. Paul sees interventionism overseas and government surveillance at home through a skeptical lens, a position that is more common, overall, on the left than the right.

Still, Paul is best known to many people as a leader of the 2010 Tea Party revolution. Others recall that one of the first media firestorms he ignited was centered on his complicated view of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Conspicuous teamwork with Democrats in Congress could help him appeal to independents in next years primaries and in the general election.

This week, Paul introduced legislation with Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to restore federal voting rights to non-violent offenders who have been released from prison.

Last week, he unveiled a bill with Sen. Patrick Leahy (Vt.), the senior Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, to give federal judges more discretion to hand out sentences below the requirements of mandatory minimums.

Paul and Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), one of the most liberal members of the Democratic caucus, last month announced a proposal to extend the Highway Trust Fund by giving companies a tax incentive to repatriate overseas profits.

In her time in the Senate, Hillary Clinton sponsored an array of bipartisan bills, with an eye on fashioning a pragmatic image after years of being seen as a hyper-partisan figure.

In the summer of 2006, for example, she co-sponsored, with former Sen. Robert Bennett (R-Utah), a proposed constitutional amendment to ban desecration of the American flag that came within one vote of passing the Senate.

First Listen: Future Brown, 'Future Brown'

Future Brown is a post-human, post-geographical electronic music collective that is both decidedly human and highly geographical. The four main members hail from far afield (Los Angeles, New York, Kuwait) but live most fully in the drifting state that artists can inhabit when they work the global circuit right. Fatima Al Qadiri is the best-known, with releases on the U.K. labels Fade To Mind and Hyperdub and extra-musical membership in the GCC, a conceptual art project that addresses hyper-real life in the Persian Gulf. Alongside her are Daniel Pineda and Asma Maroof of the club-minded duo Nguzunguzu and J-Cush (of the New York label Lit City Trax). The particulars of the roster, however, are less important than the overall sense that these musicians have a lot going on in many different spheres.

Rappers abound, as well, to fantastic effect. As is the custom in the genre of grime and what gets wrangled together under the catchall term "bass music," mic duties are handed over to a rotating cast and crew, with rhymes flying over beats that strive to sound cohesive and unique. "Room 302" opens with sass and force courtesy of Tink, who invites an otherwise happily attached paramour to stray and avail himself of her many charms ("I know you wanna hit that," she raps, before continuing, "I'm trying to seduce you, I've got a couple hundred ways I can use you"). "Talkin Bandz" follows on a weightier and more concussive note with a heavily AutoTuned DJ Victoriouz slurring alongside fellow Chicagoan Shawnna. Swerving severely again, "Big Homie" pits posse vocals by Sicko Mobb against a dainty sort of digital calypso, complete with a simulacrum of a steel drum.

The rapping taps into a wide variety of techniques and moods, but the production underneath does at least as much work. The guiding principles are a devotion to spacious, fractious beats and allusions to worldly sounds re-imagined for a borderless state of mind. Most common is a kind of all-over worldliness employed by Fatima Al Qadiri on her 2014 album Asiatisch, which plays with notions of Eastern melodies delivered by synthesized strings. But other examples proliferate, from the reggaeton lilt of "Vernaculo" to the Miami-bass-grade boom of "Killing Time." Track by track, with different rappers enlisted, it makes for multiplicity, kind of like a mixtape. As a whole, it's future music for a world faithful to a sense of place, but eager to explore new orbits.
