See the Big Picture With 'The Orbital Perspective': Review
Posted: February 10, 2015 at 11:46 am
If youre anything like me, you get a lot of your news online through various news and social media sources (especially Discovery News!). This is great, as it puts the mostup-to-date information in front of you instantly. But sometimes its nice to sit down and open up a real live book toexplorea topic much more intimately than you normally could online.
PHOTOS: An Awe-Inspiring Space Station Odyssey
As a member of the Orbital Perspective Release Crew,I recently had the opportunity to do precisely that with a free copy of Ron Garans book The Orbital Perspective: Lessons in Seeing the Big Picture from a Journey of 71 Million Miles.
Adecorated fighter pilot, astronaut, and entrepreneur, Ron has logged 178 days in space and over 71 million miles in orbit. He is the founder of the nonprofit social enterprise incubator Manna Energy Foundation and is also the founder of Fragile Oasis, which usesthe orbital perspective to inspire positive social and environmental action. During his time living and working in space over the course of two missions shuttle mission STS-124 and Expedition 27/28 aboard the ISS as well as participating in various humanitarian programs on Earth, Ron has developed a sense of acute awareness of the interconnectiveness of humanity, of how we really are all in this together. Unfortunately, regardless of how beautiful our planet looks from orbit theres no denying that actual living conditions in many places around the world are belied by that beauty.
ANALYSIS: Ron Garan: I Hope the Heat Shield and Parachutes Work
Having seen our world firsthand from both viewpoints, Ron has becomeaware of the paradox but doesnt believe that it has to be just the way things are he believes we have the ability to change things on a global scale but only if we work together only if we canachieve an orbital perspective.
This is not your typical space book. The Orbital Perspectivewont make you gasp in wonder at how the continents look from low-Earthorbitor dazzle you with glossy photographs of stars, aurorae, the Milky Way or massive spacecraft roaring into the sky. Thats not what its about. Yes, Ron has seen and been a part of all that, and yes, he does provide fascinating insight into the space program particularlythe collaboration between the U.S. and Russia to develop and construct the ISS. But The Orbital Perspective is much more about the effort itself than it is about Station or the Shuttle or what Earth looks like as it turns tirelessly below.
Collaboration in the literalsense of the word, laboringtogether is what Ron focuses on above all else because it is only through true collaborationthat amazing and world-changing things can be achieved.

The Orbital Perspective is a book for anyone who works with people (which is almost everyone who is employed) and especially those who find themselves in roles that require bringing people together to solve a problem, whether within their own organization or halfway around the world. Working in space and working on Earth are surprisingly similar (besides that pesky gravity bit) if just in that both require individuals with specialized skill sets cooperatingtogether to achieve a common goal. Ron has been one of those individuals many times, and its a privilege to gain some of his personal insight.

What to Do on the Moon – Article – Red Colony
Posted: at 11:45 am
Being far from a part of the aerospace loop, I cannot say with certainty that any of my schemes are appropriate for lunar industrialization. These are provided as mere ideas, some more researched than others, but none definitive.
WHY THE MOON?
I have chosen the moon, not for any reasons of feasibility, but because it is the closest world to the earth. The moon is ever present. Its size, and brightness makes it the realest of the extraterrestrial worlds in the common mind. Beyond that, manned missions to the moon are a proven fact. Having done something once makes doing it again, or at all far more attractive to politicians, who try to stick to the known possibilities.
A third reason is the unknown quantity of microbes. The moon has no microbes, but a flurry of papers, and websites have claimed that Mars probably does. The public has learned to fear, and mistrust all microbes, even the ones that let cows eat hay. Until a categorical proof of the absence, presence, and dangers of Martian microbes has been achieved, return trips from Mars will equal political suicide.
Granted, scientifically speaking, the fuel needed to reach the moon is little less than a trip to Mars, and Mars has far more resources, including materials capable of producing fuel for the return trip, but due to political, and emotional reasons, a trip to the moon seems more likely in the near future.
Visiting the moon will not be so bad. Skylab, Mir space station, and the ISS have proven that manned missions gain at least as much attention, and more prestige than any unmanned trips to other worlds, despite the science return, or cost.
Since orbiting space stations have proven viable, albeit not particularly cost efficient, a manned base on another world seems the next logical step. Missions to other worlds, in fact, are far more attractive than interstellar space.
Some have argued that the moon is too poor in resources for human habitation; however, scientific endeavors have proven that man can both live, and learn in space. The moon, resource poor as it is, certainly has more resources than space. Compared with space, the moon will be a better subject for colonization and discovery. Certainly, the moon may not prove the best target, but it will prove a better target than our previous colonization efforts.
RESOURCES: Low earth orbit, where our previous extraterrestrial bases have been built, is a particularly resource-poor section of space. There are only four resources in low earth orbit: Solar energy, Solar wind, a hard vacuum, and the earths magnetic field. Currently, the solar energy is used for electricity production, no efficient method of harvesting the solar wind has been designed, and the magnetic field is used only for shielding against the harshest features of the solar wind. The hard vacuum itself is not actually usable, but certain industrial techniques can be performed in hard vacuum best, and producing such a vacuum on the surface of the earth is rather expensive.
Some experiments have been conducted on using the magnetic field to produce electricity, and methods for using the solar wind, and sunlight for propulsion have had limited success, but these are not yet proven technologies. While I eagerly await such technologies becoming trustworthy, their current state prevents me from discussing them in any economic considerations other than as prospects. Goods produced in the hard vacuum of low earth orbit, although of great interest, currently lack an economical means of transportation for large scale production to be worthwhile.

Lighting Up the Duke 'D' With Genes

Light-activated genes might be precisely controlled and targeted
By Ken Kingery
Duke University researchers have devised a method to activate genes in any specific location or pattern in a lab dish with the flip of a light switch by crossing a bacteriums viral defense system with a flowers response to sunlight.
With the ability to use light to activate genes in specific locations, researchers can better study genes functions, create complex systems for growing tissue, and perhaps eventually realize science-fiction-like healing technologies.
The study was led by Charles Gersbach, assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Duke University, and published on February 9 in Nature Chemical Biology.
Researchers demonstrate their new technique to control genes by shining light through a Duke D stencil to turn on fluorescent genes in cells.
The new technique targets specific genes using an emerging genetic engineering system called CRISPR/Cas9. Discovered as the system bacteria use to identify viral invaders and slice up their DNA, the system was co-opted by researchers to precisely target specific genetic sequences.
The Duke scientists then turned to another branch of the evolutionary tree to make the system light-activated.
In many plants, two proteins lock together in the presence of light, allowing plants to sense the length of day which determines biological functions like flowering. By attaching the CRISPR/Cas9 system to one of these proteins and gene-activating proteins to the other, the team was able to turn several different genes on or off just by shining blue light on the cells.
