DNA test set to reveal why space scientist is just 4ft tall

Posted: at 9:47 am

It will be the first real opportunity to find out what my genes will tell me about my own condition of being height restricted, said Mr Loweth.

I have approached this as a scientist and engineer and I want to take part because it may divulge secrets which will help others.

Clinics across the country are taking part in the landmark project which will sequence 100,000 genomes by 2017, a feat that has never been attempted on such a scale, anywhere in the world.

The DNA of more than 75,000 people will be screened, as well as genetic make-up of thousands of tumours to find the underlying mechanisms behind life threatening and debilitating diseases.

David Cameron has said that the project will transform the future of health care, leading to new diagnostic tests and better drugs and treatments.

Mr Loweth was born in August 1977 at Basildon Hospital. His brother John who was eight at the time had also suffered from small stature but specialists at Great Ormond Street Hospital could not find a cause.

His father Peter was 6ft 2ins and his late mother Helgamarie was 5ft 8ins. Doctors assured them there was just a one in 200 chance of the condition affecting later children.

But when I was born it was confirmed I had the same syndrome within half an hour, said Mr Loweth.

Its strange because, if anything, I come from quite a tall family. My parents never said I was disabled or treated me any differently, but we all get handed cards and some are more obvious than others.

I have never had a diagnosis and I was told that if I wanted to find out what was wrong I would have to go down a genetic route. This should bring my the answers that I am looking for.

The Ultimate Guide to Eating for Skincare

With all the lotions, potions and serums we apply on our faces, it's easy to forget that radiant skin doesn't just come from what products we use. True healthy skin also comes from within. What we eat is just as important for skincare as what we apply topically. Wetalked to three nutrition and skin experts to learn exactly what to put in our grocery baskets and on our plates depending on commonskin issueblemishes, aging skin and eczema-prone skin.

Eating for Blemishes

Expert: Maria Marlowe, host of Institute for Integrative Nutrition series IINQuiry andhealth coach

It might seem intuitive, but our dietary habits are fantastic predictors of the quality of our skin. "If you think about it, skin is the body's largest organ and needs specific nutrients to look and perform its best," says Marlowe. "The foods we eat can both positively and negatively effect skin's performance and appearance. In order to get the most from your skin, you need to fuel it with nutrient-rich foods."

Marlowe says dark leafy greens such as kale and arugula are excellent sources of Vitamins A and C, which are rich in anti-oxidants and areimportant in the production of collagen and skin firmness, as well asskin differentiation, respectively. Leafy greens also are rich in sulfur, which is great for fighting bacterial inflammation in skin that causes acne.

Another must-have for fighting problem skin is the avocado. The creamy fruit isrich in fatty acids that aids in moisture retention. In addition, avocadoscontain vitamins E and Cboth of which prevent free radical damage. Finally, biotin, a known ingredient prominent in avocados that keeps skin supple and hair and nails healthy, is also anti-inflammatory. But that's not all. Marlowe says pairing an avocado with carotenoid-rich foods like tomatoes, carrots or bell peppers actually helps your body absorb anti-oxidants lycopene and beta carotene five times better both are critical in reducing UV damage and environmental aggressors.

Finally, a rather unexpected food that does wonders for skin are hemp seeds. Marlowe explains the tiny seeds actually pack a lot of punch The proteins inside contain a number of sulfur-rich amino acids that not only help with skin moisture and retention, but also hair, nail and muscle health. Hemp seeds have an "ideal ration of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids," says Marlowe. These anti-oxidants fight inflammation that causes pimples and breakouts by keeping skin's sebum in check. The sebum is responsible for keeping hair and skin moisturized, however if there's too much oil, acne and clogging can occur. Marlowe says to sprinkle hemp seeds in salads, oatmeal or smoothies to reap the benefits.

Novartis Wins U.S. Approval for First of New Psoriasis Drugs

Posted: at 9:46 am

Novartis AG (NOVN) won U.S. approval for the first in a new line of psoriasis drugs that aim to better treat the itchy, sometimes debilitating skin condition.

The Food and Drug Administration cleared the treatment to be called Cosentyx. The medicine, also known as secukinumab, is predicted to top $1 billion in sales by 2020 and will compete with other biologic drugs including AbbVie Inc. (ABBV)s No. 1 seller, Humira, and Amgen Inc. (AMGN)s best-selling Enbrel. The therapy was backed in November by European Commission health regulators.

About 7.5 million Americans have psoriasis, which is an autoimmune disease that can cause raised, red patches on the skin that are covered in dead skin cells, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation. The new type of drugs called interleukin inhibitors block interaction with the IL-17A receptor, which triggers the inflammatory response that plays a role in the disease, the FDA said.

The FDAs approval of Cosentyx signifies a turning point for psoriasis patients, who can now benefit from the first and only approved treatment targeting the IL-17 pathway, David Epstein, division head of Novartis Pharmaceuticals, said in a statement.

Similar drugs are in development at Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY) and in a partnership of Amgen and AstraZeneca Plc. (AZN) The new therapies work faster and are expected to be more effective for the most serious patients.

Cosentyx is administered as an injection under the skin. It is intended for patients who are candidates for systemic therapy, treatment using substances that travel through the bloodstream, and ultraviolet light therapy, or a combination of both, the FDA said today in a statement.

The FDAs approval was based on four clinical trials that studied secukinumab against a placebo and found more patients on the drug had clear or almost clear skin, the agency said.

Novartis, based in Basel, Switzerland, also studied secukinumab against Thousand Oaks, California-based Amgens Enbrel and said it worked significantly better to clear the skin. The latest study pitting secukinumab against Johnson & Johnson (JNJ)s Stelara showed Novartiss drug worked better, the company said in a Dec. 12 statement.

Novartiss drug may generate $1.1 billion in annual sales in 2020, according to the average of seven analysts estimates compiled by Bloomberg. AbbVies Humira had an estimated $12.6 billion in sales in 2014 while Amgen and Pfizer Inc. are expected to report about $8.4 billion in Enbrel revenue.

Older treatments such as Enbrel and Humira block a protein called TNF that signals the body to create inflammation. Stelara targets proteins known as IL-12 and IL-23, while secukinumab goes after IL-17A, which only recently has been linked to psoriasis.
