Daily shower may be bad for your skin. Docs suggest 'soak and smear'
Posted: at 4:47 pm
The blast of frigid air across the country is freezing our fingers and drying out our skin. Combine this weather with the American love of frequent showers and baths and youve got a recipe for itchy, parched skin, or aggravated conditions like dermatitis and eczema.
featurepics.com
Use lukewarm, not hot, water, and keep showers short to avoid drying out your skin, experts advise.
Should we stop showering so much, as suggested by a Discovery News story, and embrace our stink?
Not necessarily, say dermatologists. Its not so much how often you bathe, but how you bathe that matters.
Forget about that all over-sudsing, suggests Dr. Casey Carlos, assistant professor of medicine in the division of dermatology at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine.
Its the hardest thing to get people to use soap only where they need it, Carlos told TODAY.com. Because soap is designed to remove oils from the skin, its drying. So Carlos suggests using it in armpits, the groin area, feet the potentially smelly places and skipping chest, back, legs, arms.
People dont realize that the skin does a pretty good job of cleaning itself, Carlos said.
Use lukewarm, not hot, water, and keep showers short.
Then, as soon as you get out of the shower, moisturize, Carlos said.

'Nightly Show' host says he'll be himself
Larry Wilmore says that his new "Nightly Show" launching on Comedy Central later this month will be like a hybrid of "The Daily Show" and "Politically Incorrect," combining comic observations and a topical panel discussion.
Wilmore's half-hour show, which will air at 11:30 p.m. on weeknights following Jon Stewart's "Daily Show," is replacing "The Colbert Report" with Stephen Colbert headed to CBS. Unlike the star of "The Colbert Report," Wilmore will be himself, and not play a character.
"It may be comic, it may be provocative," Wilmore told reporters at a television conference on Saturday. "Who knows? It will go where it goes."
Celebrities will be part of the mix, "but they won't be hawking books and movies," he said. He'll begin test shows next week in anticipation of a Jan. 19 premiere.
Wilmore, 53, is a comic veteran with extensive experience both onstage and behind the scenes, most recently developing the ABC comedy "black-ish." He's known to Comedy Central viewers as the "senior black correspondent" on "The Daily Show." He jumped at the chance for the new show when Stewart suggested it, somewhat surprised at his age to be getting the opportunity.
Starting his show on Martin Luther King Day, Wilmore joked that "I had a dream that a brother needed to work on that day." Truthfully, he said there was no special significance to the launch date, just that it made sense to begin on a Monday when "The Daily Show" has a fresh show preceding it.
o
Meanwhile, CBS says that Colbert will begin as host of the "Late Show" on Sept. 8.
The network's entertainment chief, Nina Tassler, on Monday announced Colbert's debut. Last month CBS said that David Letterman's last show before his retirement will be broadcast on May 20.

WorldViews: Turkish premier likens Rupert Murdoch tweet to Nazi collective punishment
Posted: at 4:46 pm
A series of tweets by media mogul Rupert Murdoch in the wake of the Paris attacks has caused a wave of controversy, with high-profile critics such as author J.K. Rowling stepping in to dismiss his viewpoint.
"Maybe most Moslems peaceful, but until they recognize and destroy their growing jihadist cancer they must be held responsible," Murdoch had tweeted, using anantiquated and politically incorrect spelling for Muslims. "Big jihadist danger looming everywhere from Philippines to Africa to Europe to US. Political correctness makes for denial and hypocrisy."
Now Murdoch's comments have drawn the ire of Turkish Prime MinisterAhmet Davutoglu, according to the Turkish daily Hurriyet. Davutoglu reportedly said that the News Corp chief executive's comments reminded him of the logic used byNazi Germany.
This understanding of collective crime is the reason for the emergence of theNazimovement,Davutoglusaid Tuesday as he returned from Paris. We believe that people are innocent at birth. No matter which religion they are from, they are innocent."
Murdoch has a number of business interests in Turkey, includinga branch of his television channel Fox. However, the billionaire has a habit of making comments that prompt anger in the Muslim and Arab world including suggesting that Muslims"find it hardest" to integrate or that Egyptians were "white." This puts him at odds with Davutoglu and PresidentRecep Tayyip Erdogan's pro-Islam nationalist government.
Erdogan himself stepped into controversy on Monday when he said he couldn't understand how Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could attend the Sunday march in Paris when he had committed"state terrorism by massacring 2,500 people in Gaza"
An earlier version of the headline on this article incorrectly said that the Turkish premier had likened a Murdoch tweet to Nazi collective punishment. It has been changed.
Adam Taylor writes about foreign affairs for The Washington Post. Originally from London, he studied at the University of Manchester and Columbia University.

Censorship isn't the answer
Posted: at 4:46 pm
We should be relaxed and recharged after the Christmas break, but this years holiday period was tainted with terrible news. Airplane accidents and terrorist attacks made for a sombre end of last year, and shocked the world in the first few days of 2015.
Predictably, spy agency bosses and politicians say the Martin Place and Paris shootings justify more surveillance and data retention to prevent future attacks.
Attorney-General George Brandis, who previously found it difficult to not only detail what his data retention bill would cover but also why exactly it was needed, now thinks his government has been vindicated and that stricter security laws are urgently needed.
It is a contradiction in terms: protect the Western way of life and its illusory ideals of freedom of speech and liberty by doing the exact opposite and clamping down all those things.
Such contradictions are not problematic for the powers that be. I dont like predictions, but for 2015 it seems pretty clear that every person and organisation will be monitored much more than before.
Neither France nor UK are very strong on protecting peoples privacy from official snooping, and there is already extensive surveillance, physical and online, in both countries.
Those measures weren't sufficient to prevent the Charlie Hebdo attack and ensuing murders of hostages during the hunt for the gunmen, so there is no logical argument to introduce the same measures here.
I dont want a situation where privacy is so... sacrosanct that terrorists can confidently operate from behind those walls without fear of detection."
- MI5 chief Andrew Parker.
Parker has support for this notion with the British prime minister David Cameron. The BBC quoted Cameron as campaigning the next election on what seems to be a total erosion of privacy for everyone.

Hamza's case
Posted: at 4:46 pm
Of all the widely used social media platforms, Facebook not only remains the most populated, but also the most controversial. When it comes to Pakistan , a particularly warped environment is developing.
It is a well-known fact that accusations of blasphemy in a country like Pakistan are tantamount to incitement of violence. Also well-known is the fact that Pakistans blasphemy laws prescribe a death penalty for blasphemy.
Yet in one recent instance, a Facebook page making a case (in Urdu) for the punishment of a Pakistani woman for blasphemy was reported by a large number of users, but Facebook refused to take action against the offending page with a standard response that the page had not violated the platforms community standards.
Consequently, the page and its vile messages remained accessible for days.
In another case, an Islamabad-based female activist underwent severe harassment online, which included her being not only accused of apostasy (another grave allegation with potentially lethal consequences) but also having her private information leaked across the platform.
Predictably, all of her complaints against Urdu content were dismissed by Facebook.
Facebook has explained that its content control policy ensured adequate checks and balances, especially when it came to respecting local laws and traditions.
However, such a policy is highly problematic because in countries like Pakistan, local laws and traditions support human rights violations such as capital punishment, religious discrimination and persecution.
Also read: And now Facebook
Facebook's growing commitment to government authorities instead of its users' fundamental rights is thought-provoking, and exhibits how the influence of political economies is possibly at play.
