Nyet! Russia bans Bitcoin websites, may ban Bitcoin outright
Posted: at 5:49 am
Russian telecommunications regulator Roskomnadzor blocked access to at least seven Bitcoin related websites Tuesday on the grounds that the currency contributes to the growth of the shadow economy.
ITAR Tass reported that Roskomnadzor claimsthat the implementation of the ban follows a court order dating fromSeptember 2014, which read:
Introduction in Russia of other monetary units and production of money substitutes is prohibited. In such circumstances cryptocurrencies including bitcoin are money substitutes, contribute to the growth of the shadow economy and can not be used by citizens and legal persons on the territory of the Russian Federation.
The list of sites known to be currently unavailable in Russia include bitcoin.org, indacoin.com,coinspot.ru,hasbitcoin.ru,bitcoinconf.ru,bitcoin.it andbtcsec.com.
The move to block access to the sites comesdespite a commitment from Georgy Luntovsky, the Bank of Russias first deputy chairman in 2014 who said that the Government would not block the use of Bitcoin.
Worse could be ahead for Bitcoin in Russia, with Crypto Currencies Foundation of Russia (CCFR) chairmanIgor Chepkasov telling CoinDesk that move is likely the start of a far larger crackdown on cryptocurrencies. We can safely say that this is a dress rehearsal for the prohibition of Bitcoin in Russia Chepkasov said.
Its not clear just how big the Russian Bitcoin industry is, but there were reports in December that some Russians were moving into holding Bitcoin as the Ruble went through a period of extreme volatility.
The price of Bitcoinplunged 9% to US$206.54 at the time of writing as news of the crackdown, and potential ban spread.
If you run a Bitcoin site or business and want to check if youve been affected by the ban in Russia, Roskomnadzor provides a service to check which sites are blacklisted here.

NASA Cargo Launches to Space Station aboard SpaceX …
Posted: at 5:48 am
[image-50]More than two tons of supplies and NASA science investigations are on the way to the International Space Station aboard SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft. The spacecraft launched Saturday on the companys Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 4:47 a.m. EST.
The mission is the company's fifth official cargo delivery flight to the station through NASA's Commercial Resupply Services contract. Dragon's cargo will support more than 250 experiments that will be conducted by the stations Expeditions 42 and 43 crews.
We are delighted to kick off 2015 with our first commercial cargo launch of the year, said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. Thanks to our private sector partners, we've returned space station resupply launches to U.S. soil and are poised to do the same with the transport of our astronauts in the very near future. Todays launch not onlyresupplies the station, but also delivers important science experiments and increases the stations unique capabilities as a platform for Earth science with delivery of the Cloud-Aerosol Transport System, or CATSinstrument. Icongratulate the SpaceX and NASA teams who have made todays success possible. We look forward to extending our efforts in commercial space to include commercial crew by 2017 and to more significant milestones this year on our journey to Mars.
The CATS instrument measures the location, composition and distribution of pollution, dust, smoke, aerosols and other particulates in the atmosphere. CATS will be attached outside the station on the Japanese Experiment Module. By gaining a deeper understanding of cloud and aerosol coverage, scientists can create a better model of their role in Earth's changing global climate.
A new biological study will use flatworms as a model organism to see how gravity affects tissue regeneration and the rebuilding of damaged organs and nerves. Flatworms regenerate their cells, replacing them as they age or are damaged. This investigation studies the cell signaling mechanisms the worms use while regenerating their tissue in microgravity. Its results could provide insight into how wounds heal in space.
Also making the trip as model organisms will be fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster). Scientists will study the flies immune systems as a model for the human immune system, to explore how spaceflight can make organisms more susceptible to disease, especially since microbes can become more virulent in space.
The new Micro-5 investigation aims to understand the risks of in-flight infections in space explorers during long-term spaceflight. It will study the interactions between the host and bacteria, cellular responses and the effectiveness of countermeasures during spaceflight. The model organism Caenorhabditis elegans (roundworm) will be studied along with the microbe Salmonella typhimurium, which is known to cause food poisoning in humans.
Dragon will be grappled at 6:12 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, by Expedition 42 Commander Barry "Butch" Wilmore of NASA, using the space station's robotic arm to take hold of the spacecraft. European Space Agency astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti will support Wilmore in a backup position. Dragon is scheduled to spend about a month attached to the space station before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean, west of Baja California, Mexico, carrying more than 3,800 pounds of cargo, including crew supplies, hardware and computer resources, science experiments, space station hardware and trash.
The International Space Station is a convergence of science, technology and human innovation that demonstrates new technologies and makes research breakthroughs not possible on Earth. The space station has been occupied continuously since November 2000. In that time, more than 200 people and a variety of international and commercial spacecraft have visited the orbiting laboratory. The space station remains the springboard to NASA's next great leap in exploration, including future missions to an asteroid and Mars.

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rockets toward International Space …
Posted: at 5:48 am
Some 2.5 tons of freight are speeding toward the International Space Station following Saturday morning's successful launch of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket topped with the company's Dragon cargo capsule.
The rocket launched at4:47 a.m.Eastern Standard Time from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, following an aborted launch attempt Jan. 6. That launch was scrubbed less than two minutes before lift-off after launch controllers reported that a key component in the steering mechanism for the rocket's second stage wasn't working properly.
This morning's launch went flawlessly, delivering the capsule to orbit some 17 minutes after launch. It's the companys fifth formal cargo flight to the station under a $1.6 billion agreement with NASA to resupply the space station.
Although the mission's primary goal is to deliver the goods to the station, the launch also represented Space Exploration Technology Corporation's first try at returning a first-stage booster safely back to Earth. In this case, Earth was represented by a football-field-size, ocean-going platform dubbed the autonomous spaceport drone ship.
Three times before, Falcon 9 boosters had soft-landed into the ocean during initial tests of the booster-return system. This time, with landing legs added, the stage was to have set down on the platform.
Instead, tweeted SpaceX CEO and chief technology officer Elon Musk, "Rocket made it to drone spaceport ship, but landed hard. Close, but no cigar this time. Bodes well for the future tho."
Even so, landing with a resounding thud could be considered a partial success. The SpaceX team delivered the first stage to the platform. In past tests, from about 150 miles up, the first stages splashed down within about six miles of the projected landing spot. Engineers added special fins to the first stage of the Falcon 9 used Saturday to help steer it to a more-accurate landing. The goal was to land with an accuracy of about 30 feet. A hard landing on the platform suggests that the fin system worked.
The company had another, crewed vessel nearby, but it was too dark and foggy to get decent video of the landing attempt. Still, engineers have a wealth of telemetry the first stage sent throughout its descent they can analyze for clues as to what changes need to be made to improve chances for success on future launches.
SpaceX is trying to perfect the system so that it can use a first stage for multiple launches. The goal is to drive down launch costs in hopes of expanding access to space for a wider variety of potential users.
The Falcon 9, as well as the more-powerful Falcon Heavy slated for its initial demonstration flight later this year, are unlikely to sport reusable seconds stages, Mr. Musk acknowledged in a question-and-answer session on reddit.com earlier this week.
