India censors resign over alleged government interference

Posted: January 20, 2015 at 12:42 am

NEW DELHI: India's censorship board has been hit by mass resignations over the past few days.

The chief censor of India's Central Board of Film Certification Leela Samson and nine other members had resigned in protest of the government's clearance of the film Messenger of God. It features popular guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh preaching and also beating up gangsters. Singh is a flamboyant character, known as "guru in bling" to his followers.

The board had deemed the film unfit for public viewing on fears that it could create religious tensions, but the film was cleared after it had gone to an appeals tribunal.

"When a film is sent to the Appeals Tribunal, it takes at least two weeks to reach a consensus, said Ira Bhaskar, one of the censorship board members who resigned. My question is why was this film given precedence over others and cleared in just 24 hours. If every film has to be sent to the Tribunal, then what is the need for the Central Board for Film Certification?"

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry, which controls the censorship and appeals process has however, denied any interference.

"There is a retired justice heading the appellate tribunal, there is a Supreme Court advocate in the appellate tribunal and there is very senior journalist in the tribunal, said Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Indian Junior Minister for Information and Broadcasting. They have taken a decision that will be made public very soon. We respect all that as a government and we don't interfere in the decisions of the entire process of the film certification."

Meanwhile, several groups representing the Sikh community opposed to the film held protests across northern India following its clearance. They claim Singh, who is said to have over 50 million followers is also facing murder and rape charges in several courts, has insulted and belittled their faith in the film.

For now, the film's release has been delayed over this row and its fate would be known only once it is officially released. This controversy, however, has cast light on the simmering tensions between the government and the regulatory framework of the film certification body.

Ron Paul: If The Fed Has Nothing To Hide, It Has Nothing To Fear

Posted: at 12:42 am

Submitted by Ron Paul via The Ron Paul Institute of Peace & Prosperity,

Since the creation of the Federal Reserve in 1913, the dollar has lost over 97 percent of its purchasing power, the US economy has been subjected to a series of painful Federal Reserve-created recessions and depressions, and government has grown to dangerous levels thanks to the Feds policy of monetizing the debt. Yet the Federal Reserve still operates under a congressionally-created shroud of secrecy.

No wonder almost 75 percent of the American public supports legislation to audit the Federal Reserve.

The new Senate leadership has pledged to finally hold a vote on the audit bill this year, but, despite overwhelming public support, passage of this legislation is by no means assured.

The reason it may be difficult to pass this bill is that the 25 percent of Americans who oppose it represent some of the most powerful interests in American politics. These interests are working behind the scenes to kill the bill or replace it with a meaningless compromise. This compromise may provide limited transparency, but it would still keep the American people from learning the full truth about the Feds conduct of monetary policy.

Some opponents of the bill say an audit would somehow compromise the Feds independence. Those who make this claim cannot point to anything in the text of the bill giving Congress any new authority over the Feds conduct of monetary policy. More importantly, the idea that the Federal Reserve is somehow independent of political considerations is laughable. Economists often refer to the political business cycle, where the Fed adjusts its policies to help or hurt incumbent politicians. Former Federal Reserve Chairman Arthur Burns exposed the truth behind the propaganda regarding Federal Reserve independence when he said, if the chairman didnt do what the president wanted, the Federal Reserve would lose its independence.

Perhaps the real reason the Fed opposes an audit can be found by looking at what has been revealed about the Feds operations in recent years. In 2010, as part of the Dodd-Frank bill, Congress authorized a one-time audit of the Federal Reserves activities during the financial crisis of 2008. The audit revealed that between 2007 and 2008 the Federal Reserve loaned over $16 trillion more than four times the annual budget of the United States to foreign central banks and politically-influential private companies.

In 2013 former Federal Reserve official Andrew Huszar publicly apologized to the American people for his role in the greatest backdoor Wall Street bailout of all time the Federal Reserves quantitative easing program. Can anyone doubt an audit would further confirm how the Fed acts to benefit economic elites?

Despite the improvements shown in the (government-manipulated) economic statistics, the average American has not benefited from the Feds quantitative easing program. The abysmal failure of quantitative easing in the US may be one reason Switzerland stopped pegging the value of the Swiss Franc to the Euro following reports that the European Central Bank is about to launch its own quantitative easing program.

Quantitative easing is just the latest chapter in the Federal Reserves hundred-year history of failure. Despite this poor track record, Fed apologists still claim the American people benefit from the Federal Reserve System. But, if that were the case, why wouldnt they welcome the opportunity to let the American people know more about monetary policy? Why is the Fed acting like it has something to hide if it has nothing to fear from an audit?

What are free schools? Does the failure of Durham Free School indicate the model is flawed?

Posted: at 12:41 am

THE abrupt demise of Durham Free School, the closure of which was announced by Education Secretary Nicky Morgan after a damning Ofsted report, will come as no surprise to critics of the free school movement.

The brainchild of former Education Secretary, Michael Gove, and inspired by experimental schools in Sweden and the United States, free schools were part of the Coalition Governments Big Society initiative.

Influenced by libertarianism, the idea was to allow parents, teachers, charities, businesses and religious groups to set up their own schools.

The vision was that free schools would be an independent but state-funded school which was open to all abilities.

Crucially, like mainstream academy schools, the new free schools would not be controlled by their local educational authority.

But free schools would continue to be subject to the same schools admissions code as all other state-funded schools.

Free schools are governed by non-profit charitable trusts that sign funding agreements with the Education Secretary.

In order to set up a free school, founding groups must submit detailed applications to the Department of Education.

While there are additional start-up funds available to new free schools, mainstream funding is on the same basis as other state schools.

The new model has spread slowly around the country and the North-East still only has a handful of examples.
