NATO Secretary General: With its strong commitment to reach 2 pct of the GDP for defence expenditure until 2017 …

Posted: at 6:51 pm

NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, praised Romania, in a joint press conference on Friday with President Klaus Iohannis, saying that the country is an example of assuming NATO commitments. In turn, Iohannis gave assurances of Romanias full support for the Alliance and invited the North-Atlantic Alliance high official to visit Bucharest. In his speech, Iohannis has hinted to Russia, saying that we assist with concern to violations of territorial states, which generates insecurity. He also stressed that the missile shield in Deveselu is a strictly defensive capability, despite Russias anger, which claims that the shield is directed against it and threatens its national security.

I stress once again the defensive nature of this base and the fact that it is an important contribution of Romania in its Partnership with the US to strengthening the NATO capabilities, Romanias head of state added, showing that the Deveselu basewill be operational as of this year.

Klaus Iohannis pointed out that he has confirmed during his talks with the NATO head, the significant contribution of Romania in the NATO mission in Afghanistan in the spirit of the solidarity within the Alliance

NATO Secretary General: With itsstrong commitment to reach 2 pct of the GDP for defence expenditure until 2017, Romania is an example for others

NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg said that Romanias decision to raise the defence expenditure to 2 pct of the Gross Domestic Product by 2017 is an example for the other member states of the Alliance.

We have discussed the decision made by Romania, the agreement among all the Romanian important political parties to accomplish the tasks linked to the defence, to halt the cuts in the defence expenditure and start the gradual increment of the expenditures. Romania is an example for others. You agreed and made a strong commitment to reach 2 pct of the GDP for defence expenditure until 2017. This is an example for other states and we are going to use Romania as example for other countries, saying that if Romania did this thing it had committed to, it is important for Romania, for the entire Alliance and an example for many other allies, Stoltenberg said in Brussels, in a joint conference with President Klaus Iohannis.

According to Agerpres correspondent in Brussels, Jens Stoltenberg hailed Romanias strong commitment within NATO, and also its solid contribution to many of the Alliances activities and missions.

Paris attacks compared to NATO bombing of Serbian TV

Noam Chomsky has compared the terrorist attack on the French magazine Charlie Hebdo to NATO's 1999 airstrike on the Serbian broadcaster RTS.

Chomsky, professor emeritus at MIT and "world-famous anti-globalist", noted that the western military alliance's attack that resulted in the deaths of 16 media workers "did not cause mass protests or cries of outrage."

In a commentary published on CNN's website, he writes that the scene in Paris was "described vividly in the New York Times by veteran Europe correspondent Steven Erlanger": "A day of sirens, helicopters in the air, frantic news bulletins; of police cordons and anxious crowds; of young children led away from schools to safety. It was a day, like the previous two, of blood and horror in and around Paris."

The scene, Erlanger reported, "was an increasingly familiar one of smashed glass, broken walls, twisted timbers, scorched paint and emotional devastation."

"These last quotes, however - as independent journalist David Peterson reminds us - are not from January 2015. Rather, they are from a report by Erlanger on April 24 1999, which received far less attention. Erlanger was reporting on the NATO 'missile attack on Serbian state television headquarters' that 'knocked Radio Television Serbia off the air,' killing 16 journalists," reads the article.

Chomsky quotes the journalist as reporting at the time that "NATO and American officials defended the attack as an effort to undermine the regime of President Slobodan Milosevic of Yugoslavia," while Pentagon spokesman Kenneth Bacon "told a briefing in Washington that 'Serb TV is as much a part of Milosevic's murder machine as his military is,' hence a legitimate target of attack."

There were no demonstrations or cries of outrage, no chants of "We are RTV," no inquiries into the roots of the attack in Christian culture and history. On the contrary, the attack on the press was lauded. The highly regarded U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke, then envoy to Yugoslavia, described the successful attack on RTV as "an enormously important and, I think, positive development," a sentiment echoed by others.

The 16 deaths, he continues, caused "no demonstrations or cries of outrage, no chants of 'We are RTS', no inquiries into the roots of the attack in Christian culture and history."

'Taken' gun maker slams Liam

By David Robb

Deadline

To protect its Second Amendment rights, a handgun manufacturer is blasting Liam Neeson for exercising his First Amendment rights. "Theres too many f--king guns out there," the actor said recently. "I think the (U.S.) population is like 320 million. Theres over 300 million guns privately owned in America. I think its a f--king disgrace."

In response, North Carolina-based PARA USA which supplied guns Neesons hit film "Taken 3" but now regrets its decision is calling on the firearms industry not to provide guns to his movies. "[We] ask that our friends and partners in Hollywood refrain from associating our brand and products with his projects, the firm said in a Facebook post. We encourage our partners and friends in the firearms industry to do the same."

Neeson, whose "Taken" trilogy is filled with gun violence, thinks guns onscreen are just fine. "I grew up watching cowboy movies," he said. Loved doing that (gun gesture) with my fingers, Bang, bang, youre dead! I didn't end up a killer."

Late-blooming action hero Neesons hit parade continues March 13 with "Run All Night," in which he plays a graying assassin who gets in deep with his longtime mob boss and comes out firing.
