Ron Paul on GOP-led Senate: Here come the 'expanded neocon wars'

Posted: at 10:41 pm

Former Rep. Ron Paul senate-control-means-expanded-wars/ target=_blank>didnt wax so victorious over the Republican wave sweeping across the Senate, saying that more Rs than Ds in that side of Congress means one sure thing: more wars.

Republican control of the Senate = expanded neocon wars in Syria and Iraq. Boots on the ground are coming! Mr. Paul tweeted, moments after his son, Sen. Rand Paul, gave public remarks about Sen. Mitch McConnells win Kentucky, Mediaite reported.

Ron Paul also sent out several other tweets expressing his frustration with the Republican Party.

Looks like big Republican win tonight. Power shift? Yes, he tweeted, the Huffington Post reported. Philosophy shift? No!

And another: Dont expect big changes in D.C. after elections. Only thing that counts is pressure from the people. That should give us hope!

And one more, aimed at pressing the new GOP-controlled Senate to take action on one of his own pet projects, while legislator: With Republican control of the Senate, looking forward to a vote on audit the Fed! What do you think, Majority Leader McConnell?

Ron Paul Warns: GOP Senate Control Means Expanded Wars

Posted: at 10:41 pm

Moments after his own son Rand took the podium to celebrate Republican Sen. Mitch Connells midterm victory, ex-Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) tweeted out a dire warning about what could happen if the GOP takes over the U.S. Senate.

A Republican victory, he warned, would result in expanded neocon wars and definite deployment of boots on the ground in the battle against ISIS in Syria and Iraq:

Of course, Twitter conservatives mocked Pauls declaration for its wet blanket-like intentions and poor timing given his sons cheering of that very same potential GOP majority but the elder politician is not wrong in his assessment.

If the GOP does secure a Senate majority, it will have been because of victories from hawkish conservatives like Joni Ernst, Cory Gardner and Tom Cotton.

Over at The Week, Brendan M. Dougherty had a great piece on how those candidates represent the lamentable resurgence of the Bush-era GOP. All three ran significantly hawkish campaigns: Ernst thumped her opponent for wanting to defund the Iraq War, and campaigned with hawk-in-chief Lindsey Graham; Gardner has spoken a great deal about military funding; and Cotton is a military vet who hasnt been shy about bashing the libertarian wing of his own party.

Reasons Nick Gillespie brought up a similar argument last week: Even if the Republicans take the Senate, they are unlikely to rethink their approach to foreign policy, instead continuing to lard up military spending (while scaremongering about simple cuts to the rate of increase) all while claiming to be fiscally conservative.

With his election night tweet, Ron Paul may have fulfilled his reputation for being cranky, but he wasnt exactly wrong.

Wonkblog: Voters like the GOP and pot. Why Rand Paul may be their answer.

Posted: at 10:41 pm

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) wasn't on the ballot Tuesday, but he still emerged as one of the night's biggest winners.

It didn't matter that congressional Republicans had sent the government into a shutdown or pushed the nation toward a default. It didn't matter that GOP governors opposed an expansion of Medicaid to help cover poor people in their states. It didn't matter that Republicans ignored the wishes of one of America's fastest-growing demographic groups, Hispanics.

Voters swiftly forgot, or forgave, the GOP, electing Republicans to the House, to the Senate and to governorships. Though the national map favored Republicans, the election went better for them than almost anybody had predicted, or than the normal tides of midterm elections would have suggested.

It's an important lesson for Democrats, who sometimes act as if they cannot fathom why Republicans can do so well atthe polls even as most Americans agree with Democratic views on the issues.

G O P are hardly scarlet letters in America.

And yet, in many cases, Americans registered strong support for left-leaning ballot initiatives.

Voters in Oregon, California, the District and Alaska approved more lenient marijuana laws, while a majority of voters in Florida also backed loosening marijuana regulation(though the measurefailedto achieved the 60 percent necessary to pass). Antiabortion initiatives in Colorado and North Dakota failed, though one succeeded in Tennessee.

If there's a Republican who can thread the needle between the country's growing social libertarianism and the GOP, it might be Paul, whom Time magazine called "the most interesting man in politics."

Paul hasbeen shifting positions to attract broader support, and some of his (former) views may come back to haunt him. But as this election showed, voters' memories are short.

As speculation about a likely presidential bid heats up in coming months, Paul could play a starring role in Congress -- addressing issues on which there is mutual agreement with Democrats and coming off as far less of a firebrand.

Khairy: Ad was in English to attract foreigners as well

Posted: at 10:40 pm

November 5, 2014

There is no problem who holds the post because the task is to boost the performance of sports in the country.

PETALING JAYA: The post of the National Sports Council (NSC) director-general is open to both locals and foreigners and hence the advertisement in English.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said this when responding to criticism from Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka director Awang Sariyan for publishing the advertisement in an English daily today.

He also stressed that there would be no problem if a foreign national held the post because the task was professional in nature and it would boost the performance of sports in the country.

We have to find the best individual for the job. The issue of not being a local citizen does not arise because what is important is the individuals commitment towards boosting national sports, he told reporters after delivering a Ministerial Luncheon Keynote Address at the 2014 Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Human Capital Summit here, today.

Saying the spirit of patriotism would not be affected if the post was held by a foreign national, Khairy added that achieving professional goals and emulating the success of developed sporting nations was more important.

Its not about patriotism. Many football coaches who are behind teams that become world champions are from other countries. Coaches and policymakers abroad, too, are not from their own countries, he said.

The post, that comes with a two-year contract, fell vacant when previous director-general Zolkples Embong was appointed the 2017 SEA Games chief executive officer.

The vacancy for the post was advertised in an English daily and on the ministrys official website yesterday.
