"Bitcoin Billionaire" Reveals How Addictive A Single Click Can Be

Posted: at 8:45 am

When you begin Bitcoin Billionare, you're a nerdy bitcoin miner languishing in a musty office. But if you play the iPhone long enough, and you'll transform from a "geeky bitcoin miner to geeky bitcoin miner who owns a private island." How does one achieve this aspirational lifestyle? Just click. (And keep clicking.)

The brilliance of Bitcoin Billionaire, from Noodlecake Studios (the creators of Super Stickman Golf) and FizzPow Games, is in how it maximizes the already addictive nature of click games. "Underneath the cute retro 8-bit graphics and cheery chiptunes, the game revels in the fact that its just an idle clicker," writes Animal. The more clicks, the better. Players can click with as many fingers as the screen allows. The more you click, the more valuable your clicks become, generating more bitcoins per click. Once your mining gets rolling, your geek's surroundings quickly begin improving, with new furniture, nicer offices, and fancy tech toys.

Another way this clicker ensures your return is by allowing players to "invest" in objects like robot butlers and hover boards, which accrue value while you're away from the game. Watching ads in the game is optional, but choosing to watch them can exponentially increase the value of your clicks. If you want, you can even exchange real money for virtual "hyperbits," allowing you to shift the proceedings further in your favor. In a move of deceptive genius, the game will gift you these hyperbits in exchange for promoting it on Facebook or allowing it to send you push notifications.

By incentivizing all interaction, Bitcoin Billionaire becomes impossible to resistafter all, what's a harmless a push notification if it's worth few more sweet, sweet coins? Watch out Android users, this time sucker is coming for you next.

Bitcoin Creator Revealed? Satoshi Nakamoto's True Identity Unmasked

Posted: at 8:45 am

The search for Satoshi Nakamoto, the illusive creator of Bitcoin, may well be over(Adrian Chen/ Twitter)

Few mysteries in recent years have been as frustrating or as compelling as the question surrounding the true identity of Bitcoin's creator Satoshi Nakamoto.

Now, following five months of research into the true identity of Nakamoto, author and financial writer Dominic Frisby has narrowed down the possibilities to just one man: Nick Szabo.

In his new book 'Bitcoin - The Future of Money?' Frisby dedicates an entire chapter to detailing his investigation into uncovering Nakamoto. Through a forensic investigation that involves the trawling of 80,000 words published in various places online by Nakamoto, Szabo is singled out as the only candidate capable of creating the world's most famous cryptocurrency.

There are a number of key factors that Frisby cites in drawing his conclusions. Like others before him, Frisby draws attention to the similarities in writing style between Nakamoto and Szaboand the fact that Szabo designed the precursor to Bitcoin.

Further than any research into Nakamoto's identity so far, however, Frisby points to new evidence that pins Szabo to the creator of Bitcoin.

These include the time zone from which Nakamoto posted online tying closely to Szabo's own time zone and sleep patterns, subtle references to economists such as Carl Menger in discussions about money, the use of the coding language C++, as well as observations that Szabo and Satoshi used the same operating system.

"What for me is a humdinger: Szabo actually worked for Chaum's Digicash (an electronic money considered a precursor to Bitcoin) in the 1990s," Frisby writes. "I even found his old Digicash email address."

Many names have been put forward, including most famously Leah Goodman's speculative piece for Newsweek(owned by IBTimes UKparent company IBT Media) earlier this year that California engineer Dorian Satoshi Nakamoto was the man behind Bitcoin.

Szabo is himself very protective of his privacy. Only one photo is known to exist of him (above) and very little information beyond his own blog and various academic involvements is actually known. Speculation that he is Bitcoin's creator had surfaced before and he has denied it to both Frisby privately and on Twitter publicly.

Pinot Noir grapes owe a debt to ancient viruses

Posted: at 8:44 am

Next time you pour a glass of wine, raise a toast to the 30-million-year-old viruses that have contributed to the genetic make-up of modern grapes.

A team of UQ-led plant scientists has discovered that the Pinot Noir grape variety owes a significant part of its genetic heritage to ancient plant viruses.

In a study published in Nature Communications, Dr Andrew Geering and colleagues have mapped the presence of 30-million-year-old viruses in Pinot Noir DNA.

Viruses are usually a curse to farmers because of the damage they cause to crops, but this study also suggests they play a vital evolutionary role.

Dr Geering, a plant pathologist at the UQs Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation, said most flowering plant species, even the most primitive ones, contain sequence signatures of viruses in their genetic material.

Animals can move to avoid threats but because plants are anchored to the ground they are obliged to adapt to environmental pressures, such as those brought about by drought or grazing, using novel strategies.

Plants cope with such threats by acquiring new biochemical pathways or growth habits.

Pulling new genetic material from the environment, such as from viruses that infect the plant, means evolution can be sped up considerably.

Much like humans, plants are regularly exposed to harmful chemicals or radiation, which can cause damaging and heritable mutations to their genes which, if left unrepaired, could be lethal to their descendants.

Fortunately, there are special mechanisms to repair these mutations. Its during this repair procedure that foreign DNA such as that originating from viruses can be inserted into the plants own genetic code, much like using putty to fill a crack in the wall.
