Ron Paul to speak at USF

Posted: November 15, 2014 at 4:41 am

TAMPA Former Republican presidential candidate and longtime Texas congressman Ron Paul is coming to the University of South Florida to deliver "a candid look at the American political system."

His speech, which is free and open to the public, is set for 8 p.m. Wednesday in the ballroom of the Marshall Center at USF's Tampa campus. It's part of the student-run University Lecture Series.

"The former presidential candidate aims use his passion to motivate the audience to wake up, speak out, and let elected officials know what they want," the university wrote in announcing his speech.

USF said he will use anecdotes from his two decades in Congress to "highlight his views on the need for a limited government, more personal liberties and will advocate for liberty in politics."

Modern medicine unwraps ancient mysteries around 2,000-year-old child mummy

AN ancient Egyptian mystery has been solved after doctors in America carried out a full body scan on Bolton's 2,000-year-old child mummy.

Experts in the US have discovered that the child was younger than first thought when she died and they have also determined her cause of death as appendicitis.

Radiologists at the Palm Beach Childrens Hospital in Florida described the chance to study the mummy as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

When the artefact was first studied in 1975, Egyptologists believed the girl had died aged between four and nine and said she had most likely suffered from tuberculosis.

But fresh tests on the mummy which is part of a global tour of Bolton Museum's famous Egyptology collection have found the girl was just two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half years old.

Physicians who reviewed her scans could even tell that her hair had likely been braided beneath her gilded mask.

Chief radiologist Dr Chad Kelman said: She was incredibly well-preserved and we are looking forward to correcting some earlier findings we could only determine with such detailed CT scanning.

"This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

The acclaimed "Quest for Immortality The Hidden Treasure of Ancient Egypt" tour is now on show at South Florida Science Center in West Palm Beach.

POLICE in Bristol are tackling a surge in human trafficking and modern day slavery. Figures obtained by the Bristol Post show Avon and Somerset constabulary is dealing with 153 tip-offs so far this year, more than double the number for the whole of 2012.

A Freedom of Information request to the force's specialist human trafficking team also revealed arrests and charges have more than quadrupled.

The force is referring dozens of victims to the National Crime Agency each year and a number of high-profile cases have come to court.

Victims have been recorded from Eastern Europe, China, Vietnam and the UK and have been linked to forced labour, sexual exploitation, domestic slavery.

Court documents show victims in Bristol have ended up working in massage parlours, nail bars, car washes, travellers' sites and in growing numbers of cannabis factories.

Unseen, a Bristol charity offering protection to victims, said the new figures were "the tip of the iceberg" and warned they are set to increase further.

Avon and Somerset police said the new figures followed a trend which is set to continue. The human trafficking team said detection rates were increasing alongside public awareness after a national publicity campaign.

A Post investigation found:

the number of intelligence reports received by police has risen from 67 in 2012 to 153 (so far) this year.
