NATO says Russian military equipment entering east Ukraine

Posted: at 8:47 am

Donetsk (Ukraine) (AFP) - Ukraine said Wednesday it was readying for fresh combat operations in the war-torn east as NATO backed claims that Moscow has poured columns of military hardware across the border.

Kiev's warning will fuel fears of a return to all-out conflict despite a two-month-old ceasefire deal which has halted fighting along much of the frontline but not stopped shelling at strategic flashpoints.

Defence Minister Stepan Poltorak said Kiev was preparing for a new round of fighting after seeing "increased activity" by Russia and pro-Moscow rebels across the region.

"The main task I see is to prepare for combat operations. We are doing this, we are readying our reserves," Poltorak said at the start of a cabinet meeting.

"We observe their movements, we know where they are and we expect unpredictable actions from them."

He said the situation in the conflict zone was "complicated but stable" for now.

His comments came as NATO's supreme commander threw his weight behind allegations that Moscow has stepped up the flow of armaments across the frontier.

"We have seen columns of Russian equipment, primarily Russian tanks, Russian artillery, Russian air defence systems and Russian combat troops entering into Ukraine," US General Philip Breedlove said in Sofia.

Moscow has consistently denied that it is involved in the fighting in east Ukraine.

But it openly gives political backing to the self-declared separatist statelets and it is unclear how else the rebels could have acquired the heavy weaponry typical of a regular army.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play Edward Snowden in Oliver Stone film

Posted: at 8:46 am

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Joseph Gordon-Levitt will portray National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden in an upcoming film written and directed by Oliver Stone.

Stone, who described the Snowden NSA files leak as "one of the greatest stories of our time," will base the film on two books -- reporter Luke Harding's The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man and Anatoly Kucherena's Time of the Octopus.

Variety reported back in September that Gordon-Levitt was in talks for the role, though a firm deal was still in the works.

Gordon-Levitt is also slated to appear in 2015's The Walk, chronicling high-wire artist Philippe Petit's 1974 walk between the Twin Towers.

Snowden now lives in Moscow, more than a year after he leaked classified documents regarding the NSA's global surveillance program.

Another Snowden film, based on Glenn Greenwald's No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the N.S.A. and the U.S. Surveillance State, is also in the works at Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Better Tor-gether? Mozillla bids to bring anonymous browsing to the masses

Posted: at 8:45 am

The Mozilla Foundation isnt stupid. It knows that many people are worried about their online privacy and really arent keen on being tracked or spied upon by advertisers and spy agencies. And so to cater to this group of paranoid Web users, the maker of the popular Firefox browser has just launched a new initiative called Polaris, in partnership with the Messiah of Internet privacy the Tor Project.

Two projects have been devized under the initiative. The first one sees Mozilla and the Tor Project working alongside the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) to create privacy technology, open standards, and future product collaborations, according to Tors Andrew Lewman. Mozillas engineers are working to see how they can make Tor better and faster, which is significant because the Tor browser uses much of Firefoxs code.

Mozilla didnt reveal what improvements its working on to make things better, but it did say how it plans to speed things up. This will involve Mozilla hosting its own high-capacity Tor relays to boost the networks current, limited capacity.

Mozilla engineers are evaluating the Tor Projects changes to Firefox, to determine if changes to our own platform code base can enable Tor to work more quickly and easily, said Mozillas Denelle Dixon-Thayer in a blog post.

As for the second project, this sounds even more exciting and could potentially lead to a significant rise in Tor usage. Mozilla says its working on an experiment with its nightly builds to develop a way to keep advertisers happy without having to track people all over the web.

[It looks at] how we can offer a feature that protects those users that want to be free from invasive tracking without penalising advertisers and content sites that respect a users preferences, Dixon-Thayer said.

She added that the experiment was far from finished, and would be refined over the coming months as they received feedback from users.

Its not clear exactly what this experiment entails, but it does sound an awful lot like the rumored Tor button for Firefox. If this feature is indeed implemented into the main Firefox browser, given its popularity, its likely there would be an explosion in the number of people using Tor, not too mention more explosions of rage from senior US law enforcement officials 🙂

What with Facebook having recently launched a special URL optimized for people using Tor, its about to become a whole lot easier to remain anonymous when were browsing the web.
