Ebola: Ron Paul vs. Rand Paul
Posted: at 9:41 am
By Ashley Killough, CNN

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Washington (CNN) -- Ron Paul and Rand Paul are singing slightly different tunes on the threat of Ebola.
Sen. Rand Paul, an ophthalmologist and likely presidential contender, has been generating headlines for his stark warnings about the virus, urging a temporary flight suspension from certain West African countries and suggesting Ebola is much more contagious than the government says.
His father, former Rep. Ron Paul, who's also a physician, appears to feel differently. In a column out Sunday, he sounds less distressed about the potential of the virus spreading in the United States and doesn't seem to think airline restrictions will do much good.
White House not naming Ebola 'czar'
The former presidential candidate -- an obstetrician with a strong libertarian following -- doesn't mention banning flights as a possible solution. Instead, he writes that safety concerns can best be handled by the airlines themselves, which he says would have a greater incentive to protect passengers than governments would.
"They can do so while providing a safe means of travel for those seeking medical treatment in the United States," he writes. "This would remove the incentive to lie about exposure to the virus among those seeking to come here for treatment."
Questions remain about how Dallas nurse got Ebola

Fantastically Wrong: The Murderous, Sometimes Sexy History of the Mermaid
Posted: at 9:41 am
Hans Christian Andersens The Little Mermaid is a heartwarming tale of a mermaid falling in love, battling evil to be with her love, and living happily ever after as a human. Just kidding. Thats the Disney version. In Andersens, the young mermaid has her tongue cut out, gets burned hard by the prince when he chooses another woman, and eventually dissolves into sea foam instead of saving her own life by ritualistically stabbing said prince through the heart and bathing in his blood. Seriously.
More Fantastically Wrong Science
It was for this reason that Starbucks adopted the mermaid as its logo. (No it isnt, thats libel. Is it still libel if I admit its libelous? I guess well find out.) Regardless, it took mermaids millennia of mythology to land on those coffee cups. But relations werent always so good between our two speciesmermaids have largely been thought of as hell-bent on seducing sailors into the depths, or just smashing boats with storms if theyre not really feeling like putting the effort into being charming.
So why the mixed reviews? Where did the legend of the mermaid come from in the first place? From ancient deities to corporate lackeys, thehistory of our aquatic cousins is certainly a strange one.
According to Terry Breverton in his book Phantasmagoria: A Compendium of Monsters, Myths, and Legends, before there were mermaids, some 4,000 years ago there was a merman: Ea, the Babylonian god of the sea. He had the lower body of a fish and upper body of a human, and was one of those handy all-purpose deities, bringing humankind the arts and sciences while also finding the time to battle evil. And because he was associated with water, he was the patron god ofno jokecleaners because, well, someone needed to be. Ea would later be co-opted by the Greeks as Poseidon and the Romans as Neptune.
The earliest mermaid-like figure was likely the ancient Syrian goddess Atargatis, who watched over the fertility of her people, as well as their general well-being. She, too, was human above the waist and fish below it, and was accordingly associated with water. The Syrians bestowed Atargatis with the biggest, most resplendent temple they could muster, which came complete with a pond of sacred fish that you probably werent allowed to throw coins into for a good luck.
Never one to be left out of disseminating misinformation, the great Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder, whose Natural History would serve as scientific gospel for centuries to follow, wrote of the nereids. These were nymphs wed recognize as half-human half-fish mermaids, though the portion of the body that resembles the human figure is still rough all over with scales. He notes that Legatus of Gaul once wrote to Emperor Augustus claiming he found a considerable number of them dead upon the sea-shore. Pliny also mentions sea-men, who when night falls climb up into ships; upon which the side of the vessel where he seated himself would instantly sink downward, and if he remained there any considerable time, even go under water.
Such maliciousness is echoed in the sirens of Greek mythology, which variously were presented as beautiful women, half-bird half-women, and as mermaids. These fiends would lure men to their deaths with some sexy singing, as Odysseus well knew. He had his men strap him to the ships mast to avoid falling victim as they passed the island of the sirens, while his men plugged their ears with wax.
And so mermaids entered European mythology with conflicting personalities: Sometimes they were portrayed as beautiful, seductive maidensalmost goddesses like Atargatisgreatly desired by lonely sailors, while also being cast as siren-esque beasts that dragged men into the inky-black depths. But whatever the portrayal, mermaids wound their way deep into the nautical lore of the Middle Ages onward.
Really, it was best to avoid mermaids and mermen, just to be sure. Olaus Magnus, the 16th century writer and cartographer whose seminal map Carta Marina obsessively cataloged the many monsters of the seas around Scandinavia, noted that fishermen maintain that if you reel in a mermaid or merman, and do not presently let them go, such a cruel tempest will arise, and such a horrid lamentation of that sort of men comes with it, and of some other monsters joining with them, that you would think the sky should fall. Sea-people, it was widely held, were terribly bad luck to see or snag.

The CNBC integrates Pitt's strengths in bioengineering, math, psychology, and basic and clinical neuroscience with Carnegie Mellon's strengths in psychology, computer science, biological sciences and statistics to investigate the neural mechanisms that give rise to human cognitive abilities. The center also trains the next generation of neuroscientists through an interdisciplinary graduate and postdoctoral training program and fosters close collaborations between faculty. The CNBC is a major component of CMU's new BrainHubSM initiative and the University of Pittsburgh's Brain Institute.
CNBC co-directors Marlene Behrmann, the George A. and Helen Dunham Cowan Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at CMU, and Peter Strick, the Thomas Detre Professor and chair of the Department of Neurobiology at Pitt, chose to award Roth for his work to help the public understand complicated scientific information.
"Mark Roth does more than just report on medical and science news. His attention to detail, quest to uncover all pertinent information and commitment to explaining complex issues in a way that is understandable and relatable greatly impacts the Pittsburgh community and his readers across the globe. We are thrilled to present him with this award to recognize his efforts to share important science with the public," Behrmann and Strick said.
After spending more than 20 years as an editor at the Post-Gazette, Roth returned to full-time reporting in 2005. In that time, he has produced a monthly series for the Post-Gazette called "The Thinkers," profiling pioneering research in different fields. Tomomi Adachi Delivers Bizzare Evening in CFA Hall
Posted: at 9:40 am
Dan Fuchs/ArtsEditor
Every once in a while, you see something you simply cannot comprehend. Its not that its over your head, confusing, or made poorly. It just defies any sort ofexplanation.
Japanese composer Tomomi Adachi specializes in this brand of bizarre, avant-garde art. Surrealism, Dadaism, and futurism all blend in his work to create something totally brilliant and at the same time utterly nonsensical. Performing to a small audience at the CFA Hall on Thursday night, Adachi forced viewers to wrestle with their conceptions ofsound.
Adachis performance didnt even begin with him onstage. Sitting in front of a board covered with circuit boards and wires, Peter Blasser GRAD manipulated bass-heavy ambient tones by alternating wires in the two dozen or so boards. Dancer Ayako Kataoka, at times herself attached to wires, twirled and convulsed on stage, her movements seemingly altering the sounds. After several minutes, Adachi joined them, sampling sounds that came out of an amplified metal box full of wires, essentially a man-made electricguitar.
From there, Adachi jumped into his solo pieces, which were more conceptual. Its unclear what exactly inspired any of these pieces, but each had its own unique voice. The first, Torturing Twitter, was a spoken-word piece in which Adachi read, in real-time, five Twitter hashtag feeds: power, economy, war, cooking, and sex. Each feed was introduced gradually, and what began with tweets about President Obama eventually became a flood of porn. It was a fascinating, if not humorous, presentation of what people tweet about on a dailybasis.
The second piece, Another Ear Stretching, was by far the most interactive. A video of Adachi, projected on a screen, instructed viewers to move as ambient and natural sounds played. In essence, if we followed Adachis directions, we would manipulate the way that we heard the sounds. If we placed our hands against our ears, the sound became hollow and muffled. If we turned our heads to the right, the sound to the left became drownedout.
The third piece, which wasnt introduced with a title, was not dissimilar from the prelude, as Adachi once again used his strange string instrument to create dissonance. Here, as with the first piece, Adachi displayed an interest in found objects; the instrument of choice, while certainly functioning, seemed cobbled together with woodblocks andstrings.
Voice Sound Poetry Form Ended With X, a Dadaist sound poem, was one of the stranger pieces of the night. For about eight minutes, Adachi repeated patterns of nonsensical sounds. Some were vocal (eees and oohs), while others were more guttural, like the clicking of his tongue. In any case, the poem became an odd, ambient composition as the sounds blended into each other. The piece ran a tad long, but it was nonetheless an interesting way to examine the nature of rhythm andlanguage.
The final piece, Voice and Infrared Sensor Shirt, was the most exciting. Beginning with a sampling of ambient sound waves, Adachi then put on a collared shirt covered in microphones and sensors. At this point, his entire body became an instrument, each motion drastically affecting the sound. A tongue-click followed by an upward arm motion might play the sound in reverse. Another motion might raise the pitch. Even the act of putting on and taking off this sound-shirt produced specific, high-pitchedsounds.
This was, in short, a performance unlike anything else. Many of the performances forced us to interrogate our own understandings of sound. A piece like Another Ear Stretching revealed how our bodies play a role in the creation and intake of sound. Voice Sound Poetry Form Ended With X, by making poetry out of nonsense, made clear that words are simply constructions of other sounds. Everything here, however enigmatic, seemed to have an inherent purpose. It was one of the strangest nights of my life, but it was also one of the most thought-provoking. And therein lies Tomomi Adachis genius: his performances, though dense at first, stay with you. They crawl their way into your subconscious and make you wrestle with your environment. It was a performance that could only have been seen (or, indeed, heard) to bebelieved.
