Housefly Genome Offers Clue To Human Sickness
Posted: at 3:46 pm
Scientists have sequenced the entire genome of the common housefly and say their findings should help uncover new cures for human diseases.
The fly can carry some 100 illnesses, including one that can blind.
By comparing its DNA with that of a fruit fly, the US team at Cornell University pinpointed the genes that makes houseflies immune to the pathogens they harbour.
They also found unique code that helps the fly dissolve waste, such as faeces.
Information about these genes could help us to handle human waste and improve the environment, Dr Jeff Scott and colleagues told the journal Genome Biology.
Shoo-fly
Houseflies are ideally suited to spreading disease. They have regular contact with carcasses, rubbish and other septic matter containing bacteria, viruses and other "nasties" such as tapeworms.
They enjoy some of the same food that we do, and because they are very good at evading our detection, they get plenty of opportunities to land on it (as well as on us).
It is believed that they carry so many pathogens because they feed on liquid or semi-liquid matter - often faeces. Their constant food intake, in turn, means that they need to evacuate large amounts of faeces - along with any pathogens they are carrying - whenever they land for more than a few seconds.
Unlike us, they don't get sick from this dirty lifestyle.

New Study Finds Link Between High Blood Pressure And Psoriasis

Patients with moderate to severe psoriasis are also more likely to have uncontrolled hypertension than those not suffering from the common skin condition, according to new research appearing in the October 15 online edition of the journal JAMA Dermatology.
Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in Bethesda, Maryland examined the effect of psoriasis and its severity on blood pressure control among patients diagnosed as having hypertension.
The study authors recruited 1,322 patients with psoriasis and hypertension and 11,977 controls with hypertension but without psoriasis. They discovered a significant positive dose-response relationship between uncontrolled hypertension and psoriasis severity as objectively determined by the affected body surface area, meaning that the likelihood of uncontrolled blood pressure increased along with the severity of the skin condition.
As such, they reported that the likelihood of uncontrolled hypertension was the highest in patients suffering from moderate to severe psoriasis, defined by the researchers as three percent or more of the body surface area affected by the condition. The results held true even when controlled for age, sex, body mass index and other factors, and suggest the need for more effective blood pressure management in psoriasis patients.
Over the last several years, studies have shown that psoriasis, specifically severe psoriasis, is an independent risk factor for a variety of comorbidities, putting patients suffering with this common skin disease at an increased risk for other conditions such as heart attack and stroke, Junko Takeshita, co-first author of the new study, explained in a statement Thursday.
Knowing that psoriasis is tied to other health conditions, its vital that we have a better understanding of the systemic effects it has on other areas of the body so that we can more closely monitor these patients and provide better and preventative care, added Takeshita, a clinical instructor in the Penn Medicine department of dermatology.
For the purposes of the study, the researchers defined uncontrolled hypertension as blood pressure measured as at least 140/90, and examined data from a random sample of psoriasis patients included in a UK-based electronic medical database known as The Health Improvement Network (THIN). Takeshita said that the psoriasis diagnostic code in the THIN database had been validated through several research studies analyzing the condition.
To our knowledge, ours is the first study to evaluate the effect of objectively determined psoriasis severity on blood pressure control, Takeshita said. While the research has found a strong correlation between hypertension and psoriasis, it does not prove whether psoriasis could cause hypertension or whether the opposite is true. However, she noted that this new study is a good launching pad for future studies probing that issue.

New Clues for Kids: Whole-Gene Scan Analyzes Mystery Illnesses
Posted: at 3:45 pm
A new kind of genetic test that analyzes all of a persons genes can provide a diagnosis about a quarter of the time for patients whose conditions have baffled doctors, scientists reported Saturday. And for young children with mysterious developmental delays, the test gives a diagnosis more than 40 percent of the time.
The test is called whole-exome sequencing, and it looks at all 20,000 or so genes in the human body. Its not a whole genome sequence because it leaves out DNA thats not classified as a gene. But such tests provide a good map of the so-called protein coding sequences.
It was a relief for Audrey Lapidus of Los Angeles, whose baby son Calvin seemed just fine at first. But at 6 months, an osteopath suggested genetic testing. She said he had some very interesting facial features, Lapidus told NBC News. Other pediatricians rejected the notion.
But then he just wasnt hitting the milestones, she said. He wasnt sitting up or rolling over.
Deep down, I knew something was wrong."
Still, pediatricians and friends alike reassured her. A basic genetic panel came back clear.
Everyone wants to tell you about their nephew who didnt walk until he was 2 and he graduated from Harvard, Lapidus said. I was holding on to those stories.
At the same time, she continued to visit geneticists and neurologists. Deep down, I knew something was wrong, she said.
Calvin became the first child at UCLA to get a whole-exome genetic test at UCLA, in 2012. When it came back, it showed Calvin had Pitt-Hopkins Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder affecting only 250 children worldwide.
Its caused by a single mutation on one gene found on chromosome 18. It causes developmental delays, seizures and, as Calvins osteopath suspected, distinctive facial features, such as thin eyebrows and sunken eyes. Children often never learn to speak or walk without help.
