Get ready to live to 120

You're probably going to live longer than you thought you would -- even longer than you thought you would a few years ago.
The Society of Actuaries on Monday released a report on longevity aimed at actuaries who calculate pension costs. The new tables showed that life expectancy for men age 65 had risen two years from age 84.6 in 2000 to age 86.6 in 2014. For women age 65, overall longevity rose 2.4 years, from age 86.4 in 2000 to age 88.8 in 2014.
According to estimates from human resources consultancy Aon Hewitt, this could mean that retirement liabilities for old-fashioned defined benefit pension plans willincrease by about 7 percent.
Dale Hall, managing director of research at the Society of Actuaries, says the data on which the calculations are based was acquired from companies that still offer pension plans. Thedata included in this year's study came from significantly more blue collar occupations compared to the study done 10 years previously. "Firms hiring for blue collar jobs are more likely to have kept their defined benefit plans," Hall says.
Hall explains that blue collar and white collar mortality tends to be different, with white collar workers frequently living longer. But this study shows that regardless of what you do, your life span has probably increased and is likely to continue to do so.
The study points out that many of the current increases to longevity are thanks to improvements in water quality and sanitation, discovery and use of immunizations and antibiotics, access to Medicare and Medicaid health care coverage for seniors and the poor, and improvements in our standard of living. These factors, the study points out, are unlikely to appreciably drive increases in longevity in the future.
But that doesn't mean we won't be living longer. In fact, the actuaries are recommending that companies with pension plans consider extending their calculations to take into account the likelihood that some retirees will live to age 120. Hall says many things suggest life will continue to get longer, including development of sophisticated diagnostic, surgical and other life-sustaining techniques; improvements in nutrition, and better isolation and treatment of diseases.
"Change is coming so rapidly that we think we are going to have to start doing these studies every three years instead of every 10," Hall says,
Whether we have an old-fashioned pension or not, it behooves all of us to consider the possibility that we'll be around for awhile -- and figure out how to pay for that eventuality.

New online psoriasis resource launched

Living with psoriasis can affect many aspects of your daily life including your overall physiological and emotional health1. To coincide with World Psoriasis Day (29 October) and help people understand and manage their condition more effectively, a new educational website, mypsoriais.co.nz has been launched by AbbVie.
In New Zealand there has been a real need for information specifically for Kiwis, as a survey- by AbbVie revealed many New Zealanders (57% of survey participants) have never accessed any type of online psoriasis support.2 mypsoriasis.co.nz specifically addresses this need by providing a range of support materials including a useful My Journey tab to help patients map their psoriasis journey and learn some of what they can expect as part of living with psoriasis in New Zealand.
Psoriasis is a relatively common autoimmune disease that affects one in 50 New Zealand adults. It is caused by over-activity of the immune system in the skin. It most frequently develops in young adults and continues throughout their life. The most common form of psoriasis causes raised, inflamed, scaly, red skin lesions, known as plaques.1
Dermatologist Dr Steven Lamb says World Psoriasis Day is a really important event in helping raise awareness of an often overlooked condition.
"World Psoriasis Day provides a good opportunity to educate the public about psoriasis and highlights what its like living with the condition. It also helps those living with psoriasis realise that there are effective treatments and that they don't have to put up with the symptoms and psychological effects that come with having psoriasis."
The online quantitative survey completed by 492 New Zealanders also found there was a lack of available information on the likely prognosis and implications of psoriasis at diagnosis, with nearly half of survey respondents (49%) indicating that they did not feel they were given sufficient information about the condition and what their diagnosis meant for them.2
Feedback such as this from patients and a lack of awareness in the community about psoriasis were the driving forces behind creating the educational website.
"We have a greater understanding now of the psychological and social effects of psoriasis on the individual patients who live with the condition having significant impaired quality of life. Patients have social isolation issues, difficulty maintaining relationships, avoidance of social situations and higher rates of stress and anxiety.
"There is also good evidence now that psoriasis is more than just a skin disease with up to 30% having arthritis symptoms and other comorbidities such as obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, excessive alcohol intake and cardiovascular disease. Consequently psoriasis patients have a reduced life expectancy as well as a poorer quality of life," adds Dr Lamb.
Mike Jones, from Christchurch, developed psoriasis when he was in his early twenties. At the time he had a large social network, swam 4.5km a day and travelled extensively overseas.

The effect of statins influenced by gene profiles

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE:
28-Oct-2014
Contact: Julie Chevrette julie.chevrette@icm-mhi.org 514-376-3330 x2641 Montreal Heart Institute
Montreal, October 28, 2014 The Montreal Heart Institute Research Centre is once again pushing the limits of knowledge in personalized medicine. A meta-analysis combining the results of several pharmacogenomic studies and involving over 40,000 research subjects now makes it possible to demonstrate a different response to statins according to the patient's gene profile. This important contribution of two Montreal researchers from the Montreal Heart Institute (MHI), Dr. Jean-Claude Tardif, Director of the Research Centre and Dr. Marie-Pierre Dub, Director of the Pharmacogenomics Centre, was the subject of a scientific publication released today in the prestigious journal Nature Communications.
"Once again, the Montreal Heart Institute and its team of committed doctors, researchers and professionals stand out as world leaders in the fight against cardiovascular diseases. This research project benefitted from our participation in this international consortium, leveraged by our knowledge and our pharmacogenomic laboratory dedicated to the search for innovative treatments in the fight against heart disease. Today, these advances make it possible to identify a different response to a statin commonly used to reduce LDL-cholesterol (bad cholesterol), according to the individual's gene profile. And for the first time, two genomic regions (loci) have been identified as determining locations for responses to a statin," said Dr. Tardif.
Patients will benefit considerably in the medium and long term from these findings and innovations as the medical practices used to treat heart disease are transformed to allow each patient to receive suitable treatment. This is another of the MHI researchers' tangible contributions to the transformation of medical practices in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
Keep in mind that more than 1.3 million Canadians suffer from cardiovascular diseases, which are the world's primary cause of hospitalization and death. These diseases also put the greatest burden on our health system, with health costs nearing $22 billion per year.
