Bitcoin pegged sidechains whitepaper reveals new horizons for cryptocurrency

Posted: at 6:52 pm

This last summer Adam Back, developer of the Bitcoin algorithm HashCash, and Austin Hill, founder anonymous networking and privacy technology company Zero-Knowledge Systems, teased the idea of Bitcoin sidechains: a mechanism for transferring Bitcoins to a separate-but-connected blockchain that can be used like an alt-currency but has its Proof of Work and value entangled with Bitcoin. This is done via a mechanism called pegging which means that the sidechains security and scarcity is tied directly to (backed by) Bitcoins blockchain.

Yesterday, the sidechain whitepaper was released [PDF] for the Bitcoin community to review. The list of authors includes a staggering number of coding luminaries: Adam Back, Matt Corallo, Luke Dashjr, Mark Friedenbach, Gregory Maxwell, Andrew Miller, Andrew Poelstra, Jorge Timn, and Pieter Wuille.

Black we already know. Maxwell and Wuille are Bitcoin core developers. Luke Dashjr is a regular contributor to bitcoind and Bitcoin-Qt and maintains mining software. Corallo wrote the BitcoinJ Open Source Library.

For more information on sidechains, see todays Reddit AMA with Black, Maxwell, et al.

From the abstract of Enabling Blockchain Innovations with Pegged Sidechains:

We propose a new technology, pegged sidechains, which enables bitcoins and other ledger assets to be transferred between multiple blockchains. This gives users access to new and innovative cryptocurrency systems using the assets they already own. By reusing Bitcoins currency, these systems can more easily interoperate with each other and with Bitcoin, avoiding the liquidity shortages and market fluctuations associated with new currencies. Since sidechains are separate systems, technical and economic innovation is not hindered. Despite bidirectional transferability between Bitcoin and pegged sidechains, they are isolated: in the case of a cryptographic break (or malicious design) in a sidechain, the damage is entirely confined to the sidechain itself.

Since sidechains permit the construction of alternate blockchains that are backed by Bitcoin, it will open up the possibility for clients to allow for numerous different functionalities without the fragility of developing a brand new altcoin.

Alternate currencies (aka altcoins) are often produced to provide proof-of-concept or diverge an idea from Bitcoin. Some do this to try to produce a better Bitcoin, others to add functionality, or to develop totally different functionality (Namecoin), and yet others because of sheer whimsy (Dogecoin).

During todays Reddit AMA, Peter Wuille gave his thoughts on what he thinks sidechains will do for Bitcoin.

He believes that sidechains could provide [a] place to try out new ideas, and show their virtue to the community, before arguing they should be incorporated into Bitcoin proper (which would upgrade the security).

Giant leap for China space program

Posted: at 6:51 pm

By Katie Hunt, CNN

updated 10:42 PM EDT, Thu October 23, 2014

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Hong Kong (CNN) -- Up, up and away. Way away -- to the moon, in fact.

China launched an experimental spacecraft early Friday that is scheduled to orbit the moon before returning to Earth, a first for the country's ambitious space program and considered a precursor to a planned mission to the moon.

The unmanned spacecraft was launched by a Long March 3C rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan, western China, state media said.

It is China's first lunar module capable of returning to Earth and the mission's main technical challenge will be making sure the spacecraft slows down enough to re-enter Earth's atmosphere safely.

UCLA Scientists Propose Benchmark to Better Replicate Natural Stem Cell Development in the Laboratory Environment

Newswise In a study that will provide the foundation for scientists to better replicate natural stem cell development in an artificial environment, UCLA researchers at the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research led by Dr. Guoping Fan, professor of human genetics, have established a benchmarking standard to assess how culture conditions used to procure stem cells in the lab compare to those found in the human embryo.

The study was published online ahead of print in the journal Cell Stem Cell.

Pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) are cells that can transform into almost any cell in the human body. Scientists have long cultured PSCs in the laboratory (in vitro) using many different methods and under a variety of conditions. Though it has been known that culture techniques can affect what kind of cells PSCs eventually become, no "gold standard" has yet been established to help scientists determine how the artificial environment can better replicate that found in a natural state (in vivo).

Dr. Kevin Huang, postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Dr. Fan and a lead author of the study, analyzed data from multiple existing research studies conducted over the past year. These previously published studies used different culture methods newly developed in vitro in the hopes of coaxing human stem cells into a type of pluripotency that is in a primitive or ground-zero state.

Utilizing recently-published gene expression profiles of human preimplantation embryos as the benchmark to analyze the data, Dr. Huang and colleagues found that culture conditions do affect how genes are expressed in PSCs, and that the newer generation culture methods appear to better resemble those found in the natural environment of developing embryos. This work lays the foundation on the adoption of standardized protocol amongst the scientific community.

"By making an objective assessment of these different laboratory techniques, we found that some may have more of an edge over others in better replicating a natural state," said Dr. Huang. "When you have culture conditions that more consistently match a non-artificial environment, you have the potential for a much better reflection of what is going on in actual human development."

With these findings, Dr. Fan's lab hopes to encourage further investigation into other cell characteristics and molecular markers that determine the effectiveness of culture conditions on the proliferation and self-renewal of PSCs.

"We hope this work will help the research community to reach a consensus to quality-control human pluripotent stem cells," said Dr. Fan.
