The Skep-Tech: Is Googles removal of Bomb Gaza censorship or just the right thing to do?
Posted: at 9:42 pm
Yesterday we reported on some horrendous games that had made their way on to to the Google Play store. Bomb Gaza and Gaza Assault amongst others were games themed around the on-going conflict on the Gaza Strip. Hey, at least Call of Duty had the decency to give it a few years, guys!
As you might imagine, as word of the games spread so did the outrage which eventually prompted Google to remove the games from the store. But was this the right thing to do? Im not so sure.
At risk of banging on and on about the same point I always make: Isnt this another example of where we have devolved decision making like this to an unaccountable global corporation? As I argued when YouTube took down the videos of spree killer Elliot Rodgers, given Googles place as a hegemonic power in online content, though it makes us queasy, is it not weird that Google is the company that gets to make the decision over what is acceptable? Though Google is not the government telling us what we can and cannot do, it would be wilfully naive to argue that it is not a hugely powerful arbiter in what is acceptable online.
The decision to remove Bomb Gaza was made by Google alone and yes, if the makers of the game really did want to publish their horrible game they could offer the APK file to side-load on to your device, or produce it for another format and distribute it on floppy discs or something but given how much extra effort these alternative methods are, is this not an act of censorship? If I held a debate, but only let you speak if you can pick the sellotape from your mouth and escape from the box youd been locked in, would that really be fair?
Okay, so Bomb Gaza is just a trite video game and this isnt book burning. So why should we care? Its not like videogames are free speech are they?
I would argue that they certainly are. Just because it is a new format for expressing an opinion doesnt make it any less valid: Whilst there are more sophisticated games that make political points, like Papers Please or this satirical iPhone factory game (that was also problematically banned), theyre all expressions of a point of view however crudely and the idea of shutting any of them out should make anyone who believes in free expression nervous. The kids (lets face it, theyre probably kids) who coded the offensive games clearly feel strongly about what is happening in Gaza: why would making a poster or writing a pamphlet (as they used to do in the old days) or even sending a tweet or posting a Vine (as they do now) be any different?
Interestingly the US Supreme Court agree with me in 2005 it ruled that games are a form of speech that should be protected under the first amendment. Regardless of the outcome of this case, it wouldnt impact my opinion but it is interesting to see that Im not alone in this view.
So this brings me to the point I keep making: Why are we happy for Google to make these decisions? Is it an act of censorship? Or was removing the games the right thing to do?
Counterintuitively, the answer might be both. It would be the right thing to do, but Im not sure Google should have actually done it. In a free society, we have to accept that inevitably, some people are going to be awful. And even if we were to accept that there is a need for some degree of censorship (Im not sure I do) who put Google in charge?

Paul Revere dies at 76, founded Paul Revere and the Raiders
Posted: at 9:41 pm
Paul Revere, a teenage businessman who found an outlet for his entrepreneurial spirit in the form of a campy rock 'n' roll band that capitalized on his name, wore Revolutionary War-era costumes and cranked out a string of grungy hits in the mid-1960s, has died. The founder of Paul Revere and the Raiders was 76.
Revere died Saturday of cancer at his home in Garden Valley, Idaho, his longtime manager Roger Hart told the Associated Press. After a near-constant touring schedule in recent years, Revere retreated six months ago to his adopted home state because of health issues, said his tour manager, Ron Lemen.
Along with singer and saxophonist Mark Lindsay, Revere, a keyboard player, formed a band called the Downbeats in Boise in 1959. Within a few years they would become Paul Revere and the Raiders, string together top-10 pop hits including "Kicks," "Hungry" and "Good Thing" and become fixtures of Dick Clark's weekday afternoon TV show "Where the Action Is."
"Just Like Me," a 1965 hit written by Revere and Lindsay, made the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.
Born Paul Revere Dick on Jan. 7, 1938, in Harvard, Neb., he grew up on a farm near Boise, where he learned to play piano. While still a teenager he opened a barbershop. At 18, with three barbershops to his name, he sold them to buy a drive-in restaurant and put together the band to attract young customers.
After some local success the Downbeats moved to Portland, Ore., in 1960 and with encouragement of their new manager, radio disc jockey Hart, renamed themselves Paul Revere and the Raiders. They recorded a 1963 version of "Louie Louie" that was eclipsed by another Portland garage band, the Kingsmen, but the Raiders were on their way to Hollywood.
Joined by early core members Drake Levin on guitar, Mike Smith on drums and Phil Volk on bass, the group performed a choreographed show in elaborate outfits complete with tri-cornered hats, brightly colored frock coats, white hose and knee-high black leather boots. In 1964, they signed a contract with Columbia Records as the label's first rock act and caught Clark's eye.
"From day one, we've always been a party band that accidentally had some hit records and accidentally got on a hit television series," Revere said in a 2000 interview with the Associated Press.
"We were visual and fun and crazy and were America's answer to the British music invasion. ... We just happened to be at the right time and had the right name and had the right gimmick."
Producer Terry Melcher honed the band's hard-edged, guitar-driven sound with Lindsay, the front man, providing the vocals. The blond Revere was content to remain in the background playing organ.

#MyBodyMyRights: This powerful poster campaign by Amnesty International will change the way you view basic human rights
Posted: at 9:40 pm
And still many countries across the world refuse to provide basic healthcare and amendment in prevailing laws to save lives
Credit: Amnesty International
We all know about Savita Halappanavar's death that called attention to archaic laws in Ireland over abortion laws.Savita's death at University Hospital in Galway brought focus on the Republic of Ireland's abortion laws and thereby gross violation of human rights.Post a Supreme Court ruling in 1992, known as the X case, abortion had been constitutionally available in the Republic of Ireland. But after much international outrage, the laws were amended a tad too late.
And bringing the focus to abortion laws,Amnesty International has been running several campaigns to bring focus to human rights violations an individuals rights to his/her own body. Recently, they launched#MyBodyMyRights campaign which focuses on laws and practices that prevent individuals from making personal choices that affect their health and well-being. Amnesty's tagline for the campaign reads, "Being able to make our own decisions about our health, body and sexual life is a basic human right. Yet all over the world, many of us are persecuted for making these choices or prevented from doing so at all."
Check out Amnesty's poster campaign Its real, powerful and painful!
The UNs report on Ireland has recommended that the countrys law should be revised to provide for additional exceptions in cases of rape, incest, serious risks to the health of the mother, or fatal fetal abnormality.
