NATO can put troops wherever it wants

Posted: at 9:48 pm

WARSAW: New NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg said on Sunday that the Western alliance could deploy its forces wherever it wants, apparently calling into question post-Cold War agreements that have been shaken by Russias actions in Crimea and Ukraine.

Stoltenberg was visiting NATO member Poland to reassure it that NATO would provide the protection it sought against its former communist master, Russia, which in recent months has annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine, and been accused by the West of sending troops and equipment to back pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine.

At a summit a month ago, NATO leaders agreed to set up a spearhead rapid reaction force that could be sent to a hotspot within days, and to pre-position equipment and supplies in eastern European countries to receive the force if needed.

But they rejected appeals from NATO members in Eastern Europe, including Poland, to station thousands of troops there permanently partly because of the expense, and partly because they did not want to break a 1997 pact under which NATO promised Russia it would not permanently station significant combat forces in the east.

Stoltenberg appeared to take a tougher line in Poland, however.

Next year, at the ministerial meeting, we will take decisions regarding the so-called spearhead but, even before it is established, NATO has a strong army after all. We can deploy it wherever we want to, Stoltenberg told the state broadcaster TVP Info.

These capabilities already exist. We have them, and we can deploy them in individual regions. And this is only an add-on to what the alliance already has.

Stoltenberg, a former Norwegian prime minister, took over on Wednesday as NATO secretary-general, at a time when the alliance is wrapping up its combat mission in Afghanistan but faces new challenges from a resurgent Russia to the east and from Islamic State militants on the borders of Turkey, NATOs southernmost member.

NATO has made clear it will not intervene militarily in Ukraine, which is not an alliance member, but has reinforced the defenses of its eastern member states. Russia has repeatedly denied sending forces or equipment to the rebels in eastern Ukraine.

NATO Secretary-General: We Can Put Troops Anywhere

NATO Claims Russia Gathered 20,000 Troops on Ukraine Border

Posted: at 9:48 pm

BRUSSELS, August 5 (RIA Novosti) NATO Deputy Secretary-General Alexander Vershbow said Tuesday Russia had beefed up its troops along its border with Ukraine by some 20,000 soldiers.

Russia broke intl law w/ [with] no justification, invaded #Ukraine, backs separatists, now has +/-20,000 troops on Ukraines E. border, Vershbow wrote on his Twitter page.

NATO has never looked for pretext to stir tensions with Russia, the deputy secretary-general added in another message.

For +20yrs weve worked to build coop w/Russia, Vershbow said.

On Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that NATO revived its propaganda against Moscow in order to justify the alleged need to 'rally its ranks' in the face of an imaginary external threat to NATO, to increase military expenditure and to boost the demand for the alliance in the 21st century." The ministry also sharply criticized NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen for his ungrounded confrontational rhetoric against Russia that resembles Cold War propaganda clichs.

In a Sunday interview with French newspaper Midi Libre, Rasmussen said the alliance would draw up new defense plans in the face of alleged "Russia's aggression" against Ukraine, and again encouraged NATO countries to increase their defense spending.

The West has repeatedly accused Russia of building up its forces on its border with eastern Ukraine and supplying Ukrainian independence supporters with weapons. The West has failed to provide any proof so far.

Moscow has rejected these claims. The Russian Defense Ministry said on July 27 that in the past four months 18 international inspection teams visited the areas in Russia bordering Ukraine under the Vienna Document of 2011 and the Treaty on Open Skies and found no violations or undeclared military activity. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that before accusing Russia one has to show real evidence.

New slo-pitch organization arrives in Newfoundland

Posted: at 9:47 pm

NSA not aiming to compete, but rather complement already-establish SPN organization

To meet the demand for slo-pitch softball in this province, a new national slo-pitch organization has arrived the National Slo-Pitch Athletics of Canada, or NSA. But the group emphasizes its aim is to support slo-pitch growth in the province, and as a result is not competingwith the long-established Slo-Pitch National (SPN) program.

We dont see ourselves as competition for SPN, said Rian Mugford, the person on the ground in Newfoundland for the NSAprogram. Iactually play in a lot of SPNtournaments. Our aim is to actually create more ball. Our purpose is to co-exist, to encourage the growth of slo-pitch.

Some 60 teams are registered members of the NSAprogram in Newfoundland, and 43 of them are in the Molson Caribou league which operates out of the two ball fields in the Pleasantville section of the city.

That leagues operate five nights per week.

Slo-pitch continues to be huge ... its growing and growing, Mugford said. Theres a big emphasis on co-ed play.

NSA Canada was formed in the spring of 1997, an offshoot of the National Softball Association in the United States.

It was at this first meeting where we learned of an organization in the United States called National Softball Association, Mugford said So we chose to offer our members dual registration with NSA Canada and the National Softball Association of the USA.

This dual registration allows our members the ability to compete at an international basis at the NSA-USA events.

In addition to purchasing insurance through the association, the NSAprogram provides customized apparel and cash prizes to winning teams. The mens B/C provincials are this weekend at the Caribou Complex, and the winning teams receive customized jackets, an $800 first-place prize and an invite to the 2015 NSAWorld Series Championship in Hamilton, Ont.
