NASA is sending a 3D printer to the International Space Station
Posted: at 4:44 am
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Sept. 14 (UPI) -- When astronauts are in space, it can be difficult and frustrating to get common parts or tools they need for their work. Now, instead of contacting NASA for what they need to be sent in a cargo spacecraft, many objects the astronauts desire will be 3D printed. On September 19, SpaceX will be delivering thousands of pounds of equipment to the International Space Station, including a 3D printer.
SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk of Tesla, has been delivering cargo to the International Space Station since 2012, but it has never brought a 3D printer. It took the California company Made in Space a while to learn how to create a 3D printer that can operate without gravity, considering the printing is done in layers as they are pulled down by gravity, but they've finally done it. They tested the printer in an aircraft that does parabolic flight to simulate zero gravity.
The 3D printer will print plastic tools and parts for the astronauts in the space station, and they will be able to test how useful the printer really can be. NASA has also funded studies to look into the idea of 3D printing food for their astronauts in space.

SpaceX ditches landing legs on next Falcon 9 flight
Posted: at 4:44 am
SpaceX's next resupply mission to the International Space Station is set for takeoff as soon as Saturday after a rapid rebound from the company's last flight from Cape Canaveral, but the company has abandoned a plan to use the launch as another chance to practice rocket recovery procedures.
File photo of a Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft inside SpaceX's hangar at Cape Canaveral. Credit: SpaceX Liftoff of a 208-foot-tall Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled for Saturday at 2:16 a.m. EDT (0616 GMT), a day later than previously planned to accommodate flight preparations after SpaceX's Sept. 7 launch of the AsiaSat 6 commercial communications satellite.
If ground crews pull it off, it will bust SpaceX's record turnaround time between Falcon 9 missions as the launch company ramps up its mission cadence to accomplish a jam-packed manifest.
Before now, the fastest turnaround between SpaceX launches was 22 days between a pair of commercial Falcon 9 flights from Cape Canaveral on July 14 and Aug. 5.
In a change of plans, the Falcon 9 booster stage set to launch Saturday will not carry landing legs, according to Hannah Post, a SpaceX spokesperson. She said SpaceX does not plan to attempt a water landing of the first stage after its job during launch is completed.
SpaceX initially planned to program the rocket's first stage to fly back to Earth after completing its work to boost the Dragon spacecraft off the launch pad, but engineers swapped out the Falcon 9 booster with a first stage originally assigned to another flight, officials said.
The reason for the changeout was not disclosed.
SpaceX has fitted two Falcon 9 rockets this year with landing legs.
During liftoff, the carbon fiber-aluminum honeycomb legs are left folded against the rocket's first stage. Once the booster finishes its main job in the launch sequence, the stage falls away and uses leftover propellant to re-ignite its engines for a controlled descent back to Earth. Moments before reaching the ground, the legs extend down and outward.
The launches with landing legs earlier this year were exercises, culminating with splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean a few hundred miles from Cape Canaveral.

Scientists discover possible genetic link to autism, developmental disorders
Posted: at 4:43 am
A team of international scientists have found 10 genes with high levels of mutations which they believe could lead to intellectual disabilities including autism.
Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Adelaide, Dr Jozef Gecz, said the landmark study was essentially looking for patterns and genetic mutations.
"This work really maps a map of a human genome, starting from about 29,000 children with these disabilities, and about 20,000 controls," he said.
The team, including scientists from Australia, set out to find genetic mutations that lead to common intellectual disabilities, including autism and language problems.
"We look at the differences which are consistent, and of course, statistically, mathematically, significant," Professor Gecz said.
"And then the group at the University of Washington in Seattle actually interrogates a selected number of genes, in this case about 26, for next level possible mutations, to see whether there were differences."
The team found 10 genes with high levels of mutations, which they believe could lead to intellectual disabilities that present differently in each case.
"What it tells us is that these genes for autism, learning disability, and perhaps some of the psychiatric problems, or behavioural problems, are actually the same - they just may present in different individuals as an almost different disease," Professor Gecz said.
The findings could lead to better screening for learning disorders, and hopefully one day, treatment.
"That's what we're hoping for, that's really our aim in the long run," he said.
