7 Most Audacious Medtech Predictions

Posted: at 10:41 am

Sometimes, being audacious can be a good thing. After all, the word simply means showing a willingness to take surprisingly bold risks according to the Oxford dictionary.

Think of President John F. Kennedys famous words from 1961: I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth.

Medtech has its own idealists these days making moonshot predictions. Here are seven of the greatest hits:

1. People living until 150 Count English author and theoretician Aubrey de Grey among the futurists who see a potential for much longer lifespans than what humans now experience. De Grey claims the science is already out there to reverse molecular and cellular damage in people and stop aging. I predict that the first person to live to 150 is probably already in middle age, and that most people who are in their 20s now will probably live to be at least that old, de Grey told Newsweek last year.

According to a rumor, Apple is exploring giving its smart watches heart-attack detecting functionality.

2. The Google executive who thinks immortality Is possible Ray Kurzweil, who is currently Googles director of engineering, has made a name for himself by developing brilliant inventions and saying things that sound audacious. Technology is progressing exponentially, he argues, which will lead to what he terms the Singularity -- a point at which humans transcend biology. This will give humans the option of immortality, Kurzweil maintains. Last year, he told The New York Times that, by 2050, humans could build a virtual human body with nanobots. He continues: By the 2030s well be putting millions of nanobots inside our bodies to augment our immune system, to basically wipe out disease.

It makes sense that Kurzweil works for Google. The company shares an admiration for his vision. And in 2013, it acquired the firm Calico, which is aiming to solve death, according to many media reports -- including TIME. While that may be hyperbolic, the company is serious in its quest to extend humans life spans. As the Technology Review put it: Pretty obviously, Google isnt going to solve death. But whats interesting is that [the companys co-founder] Page, now 40, and Google have the hubris to think they might.

Calico recently announced plans to build a $1.5 billion research center in San Francisco

3. Replacing physicians with computer programs Legendary Silicon Valley investor Vinod Khosla made some waves a couple of years ago by predicting that algorithms could replace 80% of what doctors do. He hasnt softened since then. In May of this year, he proclaimed that data science will do more for medicine than all the biological sciences combined, according to Venture Beat.

4. Allowing the blind to see Not every claim has been as out of sight as immortality. Sylmar, Calif.-based Second Sight Medical Products has a more humble goal: enabling the blind to see. The FDA in early 2013 approved its Argus II Retinal Prothesis System for patients with late-stage retinitis pigmentosa, and the first US commercial implants took place early this year. A glasses-mounted camera collects visual information that is wirelessly transmitted to an implant that sends electrical signals through the retina to the brain. Patients can only discern patterns of light through the Argus II, but its a start.

Derrick Rose's Long Journey Back to Superstardom Is Only Just Beginning

Posted: at 10:41 am

For Derrick Rose, winning a gold medal at the 2014 FIBA World Cup of Basketball came with a silver liningand not the good kind, either.

Following a strong training camp that had even Team USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski declaring the Chicago Bulls star and former MVP had returned to being elite, per ESPN.com's Nick Friedell, Roses tournament performance left us with far more questions than answers.

Chief among the latter: After sustaining a pair of knee injuries that kept him out for the better part of two full NBA seasons, Roses road back to superstardom is only just beginning.

Of course, that hes even on that path at all is a testament to both the miracles of modern medicine and Roses own unimpeachable determination, facts that the three-time All-Star heartily acknowledged in a post-tournament interview with NBA.coms Sam Smith:

I think this was just a preparation test for me. Just coming here, really learning my routine, becoming a pro. Im going to transfer this onto the next season with the Bulls because I think this really helped me with recovery wise, taking care of my body, eating rightI still have to get my rhythm back. But as far as Im concerned, I think performed good.

Good might be a bit of an overstatement: In eight FIBA appearancesall off the benchRose registered a mere 4.8 points and 3.1 assists on 26 percent shooting, hitting just one of his 19 three-point attempts in the process.

Thats not to say there werent bright spots. Rose was steady-solid in his teams quarterfinals win over Goran Dragic and Slovenia (12 points on 6-of-10 from the floor), and for the most part, he seemed comfortable careening around the court in his typical frenzied fashion.

But with just two weeks remaining before the start of Bulls training camp, its become increasingly clear that Roses game is still very much a work in progress.

Luckily for Bulls fans, the pressure about the shoulders of Chicagos resident Atlas stands to be measures more manageable with the arrival of a player for whom FIBA served more as a renaissance than a rite of recovery: Pau Gasol.

Gasol, who signed a three-year, $22 million tender on July 14, was easily one of the tournaments most incendiary performers. And while Spains gold-medal gambit fell short in a shocking semifinals loss to France, Gasolwho averaged 20 points and 5.9 rebounds on 64 percent shootingproved he remains one of the games elite big men.

The future of permanent, fully integrated prosthetic limbs and bionic implants

Posted: at 10:40 am

Despite many incredible advances, the functionality of prosthetic limbs remains limited. Theres no mystery why any kind of arm or leg that you strap on to the soft exterior surfaces of your body and remove just as handily will always remain a foreign contrivance with only mortal power. In order to wield any artificial limb with full strength and confidence we are going to need to plug it in properly, so that it becomes a real part of our musculoskeletal system. Researchers at the Royal National Orthopedic hospital have now created an implant that does just that by interfacing a leg prosthesis directly toyourendoskeleton.

Bighorn sheep ram their heads together with impact forces exceeding 3400 newtons. Imagine if these guys, or perhaps giant elk, had to torque each other about on antlers held in place only by a cup and harness. Nobody would get the girl. Prosthetic designers know this and have finally begun to do what has to be done. A technique known as osseointegration was initially developed[PDF] by various researchers, primarily to bond titanium implants to bone in the arm. The grand view is that once bone-implant continuity is achieved, the groundwork is there for overlying muscularization, sensory investment, and nervous motor control to be extended to the new machine-organ.

The realization that artificial arms strong enough to walk on are not the major design point has led to the leg becoming the new driver for widespread realization of the technology. The hugely successful Flex-foot, made famous by double-amputee Oscar Pistorius, demonstrates that the material construction of the implant itself is not the limiting factor in design or performance. Properly securing a Flex-foot that is required to absorb and deliver Olympic forces requires several hours of assembly and fitting. It no doubt is also unbearable to wear it longer term, even when not under load. Now infamous for other reasons, Oscar (pictured right) did not have the ideal implant on hand when the time came to stand up to an intruder.

The prosthetic leg recently implanted in medical trials by the Royal National researchers was developed by Stanmore Implants. Itcalls its device the ITAP (Intraosseous Transcutaneous Amputation Prosthesis). The inspiration for it came from a curious paper published some time ago in Journal of Anatomy titled Natures answer to breaching the skin barrier. It describes the innovations used by mammals to create a strong and antiseptic bone-to-skin interface in other words, antlers. The researchers dissected the subcutaneous antler bone of red deer 20 of them actually and they found that they have highly porous geometry. This enables the surrounding soft tissue layers to grow directly into the bone where it can be stabilized.

Even the strongest soft-to-hard interface will eventually be compromised if it is not impervious to bacteria and viruses. As we know, skin breaches, even in the dry places likeunder your nails, are uniquely susceptible to infection. Interfaces that are moist, such as the gums or eyes, require extra accommodations and immune surveillance to keep them secure. By mimicking the antler construction, researchers were able to design implants that can form a tight seal with the surface and deeper level tissue and therefore keep infection out.

Titanium implants that bond to bone typically have special coatings to increase surface area and adherence. One such surface treatment used is hydroxyapatite (HA), the main component of bone mineral itself. HA was shown to attract fibroblasts, the types of cells that manufacture the collagen which increases strength and elasticity in subdermal tissue. In the ITAP implant, a 40mm titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) pin is coated with HA on the bone-anchored region below the skin. Above the skin, the surface treatment transitions into a DLC coating (diamond-like coating) on the smooth external part that is polished to prevent bacterial colonization. For the exit wound point, a technique known as marsupialization (presumably after the skin pouch of marsupials) was used. Here a circular cut is made in the skin and the epidermal layer is bonded along the edges. Provided that the underlying fibroblast layer is intact, the epidermal cells of the skin surface will be prevented from migrating down around the implant shaft and compromising the integrity of the seal.

Stanmore Implants main line of business is making products for internal fixation of bone that has been compromised by injury or cancer. Itsexperience in designed devices that incorporate HA to control bone growth makes itwell-poised for the trans-skeletal (transhuman?) device market. In addition to the new ITAP implants, it hasalso developed an intriguing space-age method for elongating bone. The movie below shows how itsextendible prostheses implanted into long bones works. It usesan integral 12000:1 reduction drive that is electromagnetically lengthened by the remote force of an external rotating magnetic field, without the need for additional surgery or anesthetic.

Michigan human services director to leave post after 4 years

Posted: at 10:40 am

Lansing Maura Corrigan will retire as head of Michigans Human Services Department at years end, completing a four-year commitment she made when she took the job, a spokeswoman for Gov. Rick Snyder confirmed Tuesday.

Early in his first term, Snyder appointed the former Michigan Supreme Court justice to head the huge, often-troubled state agency, which oversaw various forms of assistance to more than 2.9 million Michigan recipients in 2013.

Her departure at the end of of 2014 has been the understanding from the very beginning when Maura agreed to leave the Michigan Supreme Court to take on serving as Department of Human Services director, said Snyder press secretary Sara Wurfel.

Corrigan wants to leave government so she can spend more time with her family, including grandchildren, in Metro Detroit, department spokesman Robert Wheaton said.

She was a Republican nominee when she first ran for the Supreme Court in 1998 and for re-election in 2006.

Department-head departures by appointees at the end of a governors term in office are common in Michigan. Health Department Director James Haveman recently said he will step down after suffering a mild stroke last spring.

Snyder, whose first term ends this year, is in the midst of a tight re-election race with Democratic challenger Mark Schauer, a former state lawmaker and U.S. congressman from Battle Creek.

Corrigan has been ... a tremendous leader with an unwavering commitment to and passion for serving our states children and families in need, Wurfel said.

She said Snyder was grateful Corrigan was willing to leave her second eight-year Supreme Court term, which would have lasted until next Jan. 1, to take over leadership of the welfare agency in 2011.

This administration inherited large and long-standing problems, including a federal consent decree (the department) was under for states child welfare system, Wurfel said. Major improvements have been made, not only there but in so many other ways ... as well as being fiscally responsible with taxpayer dollars.

Hinsdale high school district stops investigating teachers who 'liked' Facebook post

Posted: at 10:40 am

The investigation into 17 suburban teachers who liked a Facebook post featuring a photo of an ax lodged in a car windshield has been canceled, a school official said Tuesday.

Hinsdale Township High School District 86 administrators canceled the probe after teacher union leaders criticized the investigation into the post, which linked to a news story about teacher contract talks.

At a press conference today about the negotiations, Board President Richard Skoda said Superintendent Bruce Law made the decision not to proceed with the investigation that stemmed from an incident in August in which the photo was inadvertently included with a news story about contract negotiations and then shared on a Facebook page for Hinsdale teachers.

Skoda said he did not know why Law had canceled the investigation, but said it may have been due to reaction from the community.

The Facebook posting that had an ax through a windshield was unfortunate and caused some people great concern, Law said via an email statement to the Tribune Tuesday afternoon.

He said he asked the board whether he had discretion over the Facebook investigation and it was given to him and he ended the investigation. Law did not say why the investigation was launched or why it was halted.

To go beyond that would be to discuss personnel matters, he said.

Skoda denied that the board had any role in either prompting or halting the investigation.

I never said to him 'I want these people investigated, terminated,' Skoda said.

Skoda said he maintained that the photo was an anti-social picture. Were not talking about whether it was deliberate or not.
