The Essence of Senescence
Posted: September 12, 2014 at 6:41 am
LATELY Ive been watching television series that presents the topic on ageing from genres that range from incredible science fiction to freaky psycho-horrors and mellow dramas. And the most likely theme that emerges is the great fear and negative perceptions staged by the actors and actresses towards getting old, inevitable it may seem as if the only horror that lies ahead is not death in itself but rather the consequences, both biological and sociological of grey hair, wrinkled face and sagging skin.
Everyone wants to be young or contain youth. It is beyond argumentation that there are many things one can accomplish with strong bones and gorgeously elastic, pore-less skin both literally and figuratively: they are preferred; they enjoy certain prestige and pride on top of physiologic advantages.
A person at the prime of his or her youth is an epitome of health. He can be injured (not that he liked to but simply for the sake of a rational proposition) but he can be expected to heal fast given the fact he has no pre-existing disease. He can party all night and grab bottles of alcohol and packs of cigarette and can still be expected to report to work the day after. A lady of 21 or 22 may choose to sunbathe the whole day and yet may fade away her sunburn and recover her original skin tone in a matter of days (with the aid of skin lighteners) or weeks. Metabolism is undeniably faster for someone young. These are all the so-called physiologic advantages of youth.
On the sociological side, most would agree that there are more drawbacks to ageing than gains.
For instance, when one is applying for a living, among the major requirements is age. Prospective employers set a particular age range that is acceptable and appropriate for the demands of the job being applied for.
Although senior citizens enjoy 20 percent discount on medications and certain dined-in foods, there are pharmacies that hoard stocks of medicines whenever they realize that the customer at the counter is a senior.
Ill health also takes its toll among senior citizens. Even those enrolled to PhilHealth and other preneed programs applicable, are not relieved from the effects of a deteriorating body caused by ageing.
They need regular check- ups for their prostate (men) and breasts (for women) for possible malignancies. The physical body can only be stretched to a certain degree before it snaps-out as in ageing. For the most part, the stretching was done during the heydays and the golden age seems to be the snapping out time. A classic wear-and-tear theory is elucidated in this example.
Another dilemma shared among senior citizens is the heightened cost of living. Medical bills for maintenance drugs, regular check-ups for degenerative disorders like Alzheimers or dementia and chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension are the culprits for the Peso losses. And when the angel of death has come to kiss them good bye, their survivors would have to shell out thousands of pesos for a decent rite of passage: a burial.
That is why anti-ageing creams and supplements that even come in invasive intravenous forms sell like hotcake. Those in the middle-age range refuse to progress to an older age group that they are more than willing to bet at anything just to remain young. Some would even succumb to the controversial and priced stem cells implantation whose integrity still merits even the most modest research pursuits.

Brain Trust: 15th Annual IdeaFestival Blossoms, Branches Out
Posted: at 6:41 am
By TODD ZEIGLERCopy Editor
The thing about ideas is, they go somewhere.
IdeaFestival is an idea that came about in Louisville in 2000. Since then, it has gone around the world to bring in leading thinkers in every conceivable field to present their views, philosophies, actions and, yes, ideas about where the world is headed.
For its 15th year, the festival is going in even newer directions.
Among those, its going out to eat. And its going to the movies.
As part of its efforts to enhance the experience year after year, IdeaFestival (IF) 2014 will branch out with Ideas Night Out, a series of small informal dinners at restaurants all over Louisville. Each dinner will feature an IF 2014 presenter in an intimate atmosphere, where the conversation begun in their presentation can continue and, perhaps, go somewhere else.
Lets say one of the speakers that we have coming this year is Joshua Green, who wrote a book called Moral Tribes, which is really interesting, said IdeaFestival founder Kris Kimel. Somebody says You know, Id like to have dinner with him. The dinners will be no more than about 14 people at a restaurant, so you can sign up and basically go have dinner with Joshua Green and just talk to him and other people at the table about whatever you want to talk about. Thats something we havent done before that were trying this year. So far, the process has been really positive, so we will see what happens.
Kris Kimel.
For a small additional ticket fee, you could discuss how our perception of time could make time travel possible with BBC reporter Claudia Hammond. Or probe even deeper into the possibilities of extraterrestrial life with science writer Lee Billings. How about discussing the rapidly changing economy with former diplomat Peter Van Buren over dessert?
Its one of several innovations introduced this year by Kimel and his team, with the goal of pushing the festival forward and keeping the experience fresh.

Unlikely Causes: The Technology of Heritage Preservation and Human Rights Movements
Posted: at 6:40 am
Today, preservationists are in a unique position: constantly racing against the clock to document, repair and maintain temples, structures, fortresses, and even human cultures, on the verge of collapse. What many of us dont realize is that heritage is central to the human condition it is what makes us human. Sadly many such sites are in danger of becoming too fragile to repair. So it stands that innovation in the technology industry is heritages best friend allowing for duplication and preservation of the echoes of the past, far into the future.
In an age of heightened efficiency, innovation in the preservation industry is crucial. Age old processes which historically took countless hours and exhausted manpower reserves, are becoming easier than ever to complete, and complete quickly. We still document sites with hand drawings and archaeologists still uses shovels, trowels and brushes to excavate, but we have new tools today. Drones, 3-D scanning, GPS, satellite imagery and rectified photography are helping us document sites while modern materials and techniques are revolutionizing the conservation o structures. Recent advancements, such as the ability to more rapidly and accurately collect and process large amounts of data, are allowing organizations to document, analyze, and ultimately preserve important heritage sites around the world.
Non-profit organizations like Global Heritage Fund and CyArkare using high-tech tools like ground penetrating radar, LIDAR and drones to preserve heritage sites at a pace never before seen, and in remote corners of the world. The use of 3-D imaging tools at Banteay Chhmar, Cambodia an endangered site among Cambodias top-listed sites for nomination to UNESCOs World Heritage List. The ruin is one of the great architectural masterpieces of Southeast Asia and the Khmer Kingdoms Angkorian Period, but lacking any conservation over the past 800 years, the temple complex has slowly collapsed and disintegrated.
Similarly, preservation of human rights is becoming an increasingly dangerous, remote and urgent job. In these cases, the AAAS Scientific Responsibility, Human Rights and Law Programemploys remote sensing, GPS and Internet mapping technologiesto observe conflicts, track climate change and disease spread, as well as safeguard human rights across a multitude of countries and regions. For example, AAAS has been working with human rights groups on a three-pronged initiative in Syria. Using high tech satellite imagery, AAAS has been able to identify and investigate human rights-related reports stemming from the conflict in Aleppo. The technology was also used to document escalation of the conflict, focusing on damage and destruction of cultural sites and important medical facilities across the region, and also military movement and evidence of vehicles and equipment.
Technology is invaluable in a number of ways during the preservation process. It not only allows for accurate and precise iterations of an at-risk site, allowing preservationists to maintain it for generations to come, but it also allows the industry to focus on other aspects of the site, including on-boarding community volunteers, working with local governments, and reinvigorating stalled economies. And for global humanitarian efforts, technology allows for anticipation and research of conflict, and speedier deployment of human rights services and aid.
While advanced technology does not often make a cameo on the big screen in films about heritage and humanitarian crises, there is much at work behind the scenes. Preservationists in many countries, from the United States to Cambodia, are using these tools to preserve and protect what seems to be taken for granted the most in 2014: culture. Its undeniable that there are few more real and tangible ways technology is helping to preserve our past while simultaneously ensuring it, and our ancestors, has a place in the future.
Vince Michael, PhD, is Executive Director of the Global Heritage Fund.

Like a human post-it note, Taimane Tuiasosopo (top), a senior at Saint Mary's College in Moraga, writes dorm room numbers on pieces of tape to be attached to incoming freshmen's personal belongings outside of the college's Augustine Hall on Aug. 28, the first day of the college's annual Weekend of Welcome for new and returning students. Almost 600 freshmen moved onto campus that weekend. Other Augustine Hall scenes: Saint mary's freshman Kaitlyn Humphries, lower left, of Valencia decorates her dorm room; and sophomores Alexa Gambero, Erika Navarro, and Patick Myers carry a new freshman's belongings.

Liquid Light Raises $15 Million To Convert Carbon Emissions To Chemicals
Posted: at 6:40 am
In the year 2013, the amount of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere particularly carbon dioxide increased at its fastest rate in 30 years. According to the World Meterological Association, concentrations of CO2 have reached new highs higher, in fact, than theyve ever been since humans first evolved. That continued increase of CO2 emissions is, in turn, a major contributor to climate change and ocean acidification.
The problems of carbon dioxide emissions and the resulting climate change are too big to have one solution. Theyll require multiple solutions from business, government, and other institutions.
Liquid Light, a New Jersey-based startup, believes it has one of those solutions. The company announced today that it has raised $15 million in series B financing to take their chemical process to an industrial scale. That process? Theyre turning carbon dioxide emissions from industry into commercially useful chemicals like the precursors used to create the plastic in your soda bottle.
A very basic overview of Liquid Lights process. (Credit: Liquid Light)
Most industrial organic chemicals, like those used in plastics, are composed of just three atoms in different combinations: carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Liquid Lights process uses CO2 as the base of its chemical synthesis, along with different co-feedstocks of other chemicals which can include the waste products of other industrial processes.
Of course, that chemistry isnt new plenty of scientists are working on ways to reuse carbon dioxide. What differentiates Liquid Lights product involves both reducing the amount of energy needed for the process by the use of its catalysts and utilizing cheap waste CO2 from industrial processes rather than more expensive sources of chemicals used for industrial organic chemistry such as corn or oil. Those combine to make the process extremely cost-efficient. So far, their methods have been validated in the lab, and a research team at Princeton University confirmed it in a paper published in July.
With the new investment money coming from investors such as Sustainable Conversion Ventures, VantagePoint Capital Partners, BP Ventures, Chrysalix Energy Venture Capital, and Osage University Partners, the company hopes to scale up their process to validate results on a larger level, both in terms of the process itself and the plastics that result. If theyre successful, that information can be used to produce tons of organic chemicals per day at the plant level.
Although the process can be used to create different organic chemicals, Liquid Light is setting its sights on just one for right now the production of ethylene glycol. Ethylene glycol is used as the base material for the production of polyester, plastic bottles, and other products. The company estimates that the size of that market is about $87 billion.
If theyre successful at scaling up, Liquid Light could become a serious contender in its industry. The company claims that its carbon feedstock cost to make a ton of ethylene glycol could be around 20% of the cost of more traditional methods. If that holds, they could be profitable pretty quickly while at the same time providing a potential solution to help prevent the worst predicted effects of climate change.
