In prison for killing Rhoni Reuter, the pregnant girlfriend of ex-Chicago Bears player Shaun Gayle, Marni Yang is hoping new DNA tests will exonerate her.

On Thursday, Lake County Circuit Court Judge Christopher Stride signed an order for the testing of shell casings from the bullets used to kill Reuter, 42, of Deerfield, who was seven months pregnant when she was killed in 2007.

I know her trial was highly watched, and the evidence seemed overwhelming, said Jed Stone, Yangs defense attorney. But we are on a truth-seeking mission.

Stone said he has retained a highly respected DNA expert to attempt to extract touch DNA from the shell casings, which Stone said could identify the real killer.

Assistant States Attorney Ari Fisz said prosecutors have no objection to Stones request for new DNA testing.

After she was convicted in Lake County Circuit Court, Yang lost an appeal in the 2nd District Appellate Court, and the Illinois Supreme Court refused to hear her case.

But Stone said Yangs first, direct appeal was limited to information used during the trial. Stone is now putting together a post-conviction petition that can bring in new evidence that wasnt heard at trial.

World's largest DNA origami created

Posted: at 6:43 am

Researchers from North Carolina State University, Duke University and the University of Copenhagen have created the world's largest DNA origami, which are nanoscale constructions with applications ranging from biomedical research to nanoelectronics.

"These origami can be customized for use in everything from studying cell behavior to creating templates for the nanofabrication of electronic components," says Dr. Thom LaBean, an associate professor of materials science and engineering at NC State and senior author of a paper describing the work.

DNA origami are self-assembling biochemical structures that are made up of two types of DNA. To make DNA origami, researchers begin with a biologically derived strand of DNA called the scaffold strand. The researchers then design customized synthetic strands of DNA, called staple strands. Each staple strand is made up of a specific sequence of bases (adenine, cytosine, thaline and guanine -- the building blocks of DNA), which is designed to pair with specific subsequences on the scaffold strand.

The staple strands are introduced into a solution containing the scaffold strand, and the solution is then heated and cooled. During this process, each staple strand attaches to specific sections of the scaffold strand, pulling those sections together and folding the scaffold strand into a specific shape.

The standard for DNA origami has long been limited to a scaffold strand that is made up of 7,249 bases, creating structures that measure roughly 70 nanometers (nm) by 90 nm, though the shapes may vary.

However, the research team led by LaBean has now created DNA origami consisting of 51,466 bases, measuring approximately 200 nm by 300 nm.

"We had to do two things to make this viable," says Dr. Alexandria Marchi, lead author of the paper and a postdoctoral researcher at Duke. "First we had to develop a custom scaffold strand that contained 51 kilobases. We did that with the help of molecular biologist Stanley Brown at the University of Copenhagen.

"Second, in order to make this economically feasible, we had to find a cost-effective way of synthesizing staple strands -- because we went from needing 220 staple strands to needing more than 1,600," Marchi says.

The researchers did this by using what is essentially a converted inkjet printer to synthesize DNA directly onto a plastic chip.

"The technique we used not only creates large DNA origami, but has a fairly uniform output," LaBean says. "More than 90 percent of the origami are self-assembling properly."

Scientists unveil gibbon genome, reveal secrets of our endangered ape relatives

Posted: at 6:43 am

Washington Gibbons - the small, long-armed tree swingers that inhabit the dense tropical forests of Southeast Asia - have become the last of the planet's apes to have their genetic secrets revealed.

"We now have whole genome sequences for all the great apes and, with this work, also the small apes - gibbons," said Jeffrey Rogers, a primate genetics researcher at the Human Genome Sequencing Center at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

"This provides new information and insight into the history of the human genome, in evolutionary terms," added Rogers, who participated in the study published in the journal Nature.

Scientists on Wednesday unveiled the genome of gibbons, a close cousin of humans genetically but still the most distantly related to people among the apes.

The study found the genetic underpinning for the fantastic ability of gibbons to swing from tree to tree at speeds of up to 35 mph. It also detected an extraordinary number of structural changes in their DNA. Such changes can be troublesome in other species, including causing cancer in people, but do not seem to have been problematic during the evolution of gibbons.

Among the great apes, the chimpanzee genome was published in 2005, followed by the orangutan in 2011 and the gorilla and the bonobo in 2012.

The gibbon genome fills the gap between Old World Monkeys like macaques and baboons and the great apes, said the study leader, primate genomics expert Lucia Carbone of the Oregon Health & Science University and the Oregon National Primate Research Center.

Carbone said other studies have estimated the gibbon genome as 96 percent similar to people, compared with 98 percent for chimpanzees, our closest ape cousin.

Gibbons are critically endangered. One species, the Hainan gibbon, has only 20 individuals left. Carbone expressed hope the genome will help forge conservation strategies, for instance to assess genetic diversity in wild populations and identify ones that are most at risk.

These omnivores forage for food in the high forest canopy, eating fruit, leaves, bird eggs, insects and birds. Gibbons are monogamous, forming long-term pairs. Individuals from their 19 species range from roughly 11 pounds to 26 pounds.

Female baboons with male friends live longer

Posted: at 6:43 am

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Research has shown strong social relationships -- both with friends and significant others -- to be good for human health. Now a new study shows the same holds true for baboons.

Previous studies have shown same-sex social interaction to have positive impacts on the longevity of rats and dolphins, but the latest research out of Duke University showed the health and life expectancy of female baboons was especially improved by increased interaction, or "social grooming," with male companions.

"Grooming is the baboon equivalent of gossip, or having a good conversation over a cup of coffee," Duke researcher and study co-author, Susan Alberts, explained in a press release.

Alberts and her colleagues -- including study co-author Jenny Tung -- observed the social behaviors of some 200 wild female baboons living in the plains of southern Kenya. They estimated long-term sociability by measuring how often each female partook in social grooming sessions relative to rest of the troop.

The researchers found that more sociable females were likely to live two to three years longer than their less-friendly female peers. As the reason why, Alberts surmised: "Males' larger size may make them better than females at defending their friends against potential bullies."

The study also found that while older females begin interacting less and less with other females, their male friendships remain constant.

"When females get older, many of their female peers start to pass away, and their daughters become tied up with their own infants, leaving less time for social interaction," Alberts said. "It suggests that social isolation isn't an inevitable part of aging, but instead may simply be a consequence of declines in potential friends' availability."

The study was published this week in the journal the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
