Skylits handheld device could bring psoriasis, eczema phototherapy home

Posted: at 4:42 pm

San Diego startup Skylit Medical is developing a phototherapy device for private home use to treat conditions like psoriasis, eczema and vitiligo. Its one of thosenecessitys the mother of inventionish stories founder Martyn Grosshimself has eczema and psoriasis.

We are a frustrated group, because this is an inflammatory condition for which there is no cure so we spend $10 billion per year to solve this problem, Gross said, adding that most of these dollars go to systemic and biologic drugs, hesaid, which are costly out-of-pocket for patients.

Indeed, onecommon therapy for these autoimmune skin conditions is UVB therapy but the problem for many patients, Grosssaid, is that it takes a significant time investment to regularly go to a phototherapy clinic.

Skylits concept is todevelop its handheld device, setting up an out-of-pocket subscription service for patients to essentially lease it and use it at home. The patient would receive a prescription from a dermatologist, and then the doctor-programmed device would do the rest of the work. Itd turn on the UVB light in, say, 30-second increments whatever and whenever the doctor orders and then automatically shut off once the days sufficient therapy has been administered.

The goal is ultimately to build a camera into the device, so that the skin conditions progression can be tracked by a derm. In the near-term, the device will at least have WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities to transmit prescription data from the doc to the patient, Gross said.

Phototherapy has, by the way, a range of benefits for skin conditions, according to the National Eczema Association reducing itch, working as an anti-inflammatory agent, increasing vitamin D production and increasing bacteria-fighting systems in the skin. For psoriasis and even vitiligo, it shows similar benefits.

Skylit isnt the only device, it should be noted, that is working in the at-home phototherapy business. But thecompanys in the midst of a $2 million seedround, having raised about $150,000 by the end of July, according to a regulatory filing. Gross said it hopes to raise $3.4 million, however, in its Series A round.

The goal with the Skylit device was to make it as easy as possible, Gross said.

Out in the Open: Hackers Build a Skype Thats Not Controlled by Microsoft

Posted: at 4:42 pm

Screenshot: WIRED/Source: Tox

The web forum 4chan is known mostly as a place to share juvenile and, to put it mildly, politically incorrect images. But its also the birthplace of one of the latest attempts to subvert the NSAs mass surveillance program.

When whistleblower Edward Snowden revealed that full extent of the NSAs activities last year, members of the sites tech forum started talking about the need for a more secure alternative to Skype. Soon, theyd opened a chat room to discuss the project and created an account on the code hosting and collaboration site GitHub and began uploading code.

Eventually, they settled on the name Tox, and you can already download prototypes of the surprisingly easy-to-use tool. The tool is part of a widespread effort to create secure online communication tools that are controlled not only by any one company, but by the world at largea continued reaction to the Snowden revelations. This includes everything from instant messaging tools to email services.

Its too early to count on Tox to protect you from eavesdroppers and spies. Like so many other new tools, its still in the early stages of development and has yet to receive the scrutiny that other security tools, such as the instant messaging encryption plugin Off The Record has. But it endeavors to carve a unique niche within the secure communications ecosystem.

The main thing the Tox team is trying to do, besides provide encryption, is create a tool that requires no central servers whatsoevernot even ones that you would host yourself. It relies on the same technology that BitTorrent uses to provide direct connections between users, so theres no central hub to snoop on or take down.

There are other developers trying to build a secure, peer-to-peer messaging systems, including Briar and Invisible.im, a project co-created by HD Moore, the creator of the popular security testing framework Metasploit. And there are other secure-centric voice calling apps, including those from Whisper Systems and Silent Circle, which encrypt calls made through the traditional telco infrastructure. But Tox is trying to roll both peer-to-peer and voice calling into one.

Actually, its going a bit further than that. Tox is actually just a protocol for encrypted peer-to-peer data transmission. Tox is just a tunnel to another node thats encrypted and secure, says David Lohle, a spokesperson for the project. What you want to send over that pipe is up to your imagination. For example, one developer is building an e-mail replacement with the protocol, and Lohle says someone else is building an open source alternative to BitTorrent Sync.

That said, the core Tox team is focused on building the features specifically required for building a Skype replacement. There are at least 10 different Tox messaging and voice clients so far, each supporting a different range of features. Eventually, Lohle says, there will be official clients for each major operating system, but for now the team is just recommending a few specific clients. Tox, which is available for Linux and Windows, is a the bleeding edge reference design, while qTox is the projects recommendation for OS X users and Antox is the recommended for Android. There is no iOS version as of yet.

Tox is still rough, but the interface and experience is straightforward. You download the client, and it automatically creates a public encryption key that you can provide to everyone, and a private encryption key that you keep on your computer or phone. From there, it works very much like Skype. You can add a friend to your contact list by pasting in their public key, and then you just click their name to send them a message, or click the big phone icon to call them. If you want to move your identity from one computer to another, you just copy a single file that includes your private key and contact list.

You Thought Ron Paul Was Outspoken When He Was in Congress? You Won't Believe What He's Saying Now

Posted: at 4:41 pm

Ron Paul. Photo: U.S. House of Representatives.

The "intellectual godfather" of the Tea Party movement, Ron Paul represented the voters of Texas in Congress for nearly a quarter-century -- raising Cain the whole way. He's criticized the war on drugs and the war in Iraq, supported less government spending and lower taxes, and even called Ronald Reagan's term as president "disgraceful." A libertarian at heart, there's probably not a voter on either the right or the left that he hasn't irked at one time or another over four decades of government service.

Paul retired from Congress in 2013 and now heads the Voices of Liberty website, where he seeks to "rally liberty-minded activists, influence the climate of ideas, and offer actionable solutions on issues of importance to American liberty and freedom." We reached out to Paul to hear his thoughts on how foreign relations and foreign policy are impacting the U.S. economy in general, and U.S. defense companies in particular.

Here's what he had to say, in his own words.

The Motley Fool: Dr. Paul, you recently argued on Voices of Liberty that "military spending, like all government spending, hampers private sector growth by taking resources away from investors, entrepreneurs, and consumers while contributing significantly to the national debt." You highlighted China's smallerdefense budget -- $188 billion -- as one reason its economy appears to be outperforming ours, and urged that America "return to the policy of peace and free trade."

Could you expand on that?

Ron Paul: The U.S. is hardly a beacon of free trade, though it ought to be. As to the military, its job is not to serve the investment banks and exporters by attacking "bad actors," but to protect the lives and property of the American people in America from foreign enemies. A good first step would be to stop creating foreign enemies by ending our interventionist foreign policy. ...

The current role of the U.S. military is to enable the U.S. and its crony companies to dominate the globe. This is not compatible with free-market capitalism or peace. ... States seeking to dominate the globe militarily often find themselves bankrupted and resented, ultimately dominated by those who were once on the receiving end. It is far better to engage in mutually beneficial free trade which boosts the American economy while creating friends instead of enemies overseas. No empire!

TMF: The Pentagon is budgeted to spend more than $615 billion this fiscal year. What do you think a more appropriate level of defense spending might be? What specific programs do you think deserve to be cut?

ALS patient more independent with tech

Posted: at 4:41 pm

In general, how has technology helped you live with ALS? The short answer is totally. Frankly, with out all this technology to control a computer, and the access it gives me to internet communication, I would have allowed myself, to simply succumb myself to ALS years ago. With the technology available now, I am able to keep myself occupied both professionally, albeit volunteer, as well as socially. I am able to be of service to others and to the cause of finding an effective treatment for my own disease. This keeps my perceived quality of life quite high. I can talk with visitors but I can also schedule their visits. I can manage my own finances and health care. Outside of the physical paralysis that I am still nearly as independent and potent as before diagnosis. What are three of your biggest challenges right now. Like turning off light, controlling temperature, and how do you currently manage those challenges? I have an infrared transceiver which coupled with software on my computer I can control my television and stereo. I use various network tools to control other computers around my house and to help other patients around the country with their own computers. I have attendants who help with lights, temperature, windows, etc. And what was your experience wearing the Emotive Insight Brainware? It is very lightweight and comfortable in its current, second incarnation. The training of the device requires a little patience but it's surprisingly natural in feel. We use our interface devised the Philips POC product is a work of art. I am very impressed with the work done to ensure flow and feedback. If it were to hit the market, how do you see it improving your life? There are critical limitations if one wants to use eyes. Also eyes can fail. Medication interferes with pupils. In ALS, the eyes are relatively spared, but I've lost two friends whose eyes succumbed to the disease, and they could no longer communicate. With this product they could have continued living, that alone demands a market for this. How do you hope technology can improve to help other ALS patients? We have amazing technology and commodity consumer goods. That power must be delivered to the average person in a way they can use and at a price they can afford. This product can achieve both, while also being the most noble form of technology, restoring lost ability and personal independence. We, as people, are the expression of our minds. Our physical bodies are just a vessel for a manifestation of the mind. Therefore, loss of physical ability does not diminish our persons. All it does is limit the ability to manipulate the physical world. I am somewhat of a transhumanist and believe that technology can not only enhance abilities but also restore lost abilities due to trauma or disease. So until medical science catches up technology is the cure for [INAUDIBLE]
