Rand Paul seeks new allies among Romney team
Posted: April 26, 2014 at 6:45 am
BOSTON Fighting to move beyond his father's shadow, Sen. Rand Paul is crafting new alliances with the Republican Party establishment during a Northeast tour that began Friday in Boston.
The 51-year-old Kentucky Republican, son of libertarian hero and former Texas Rep. Ron Paul, headlined an afternoon luncheon hosted by top lieutenants of former presidential nominee Mitt Romney a private meeting that comes as Paul weighs a 2016 presidential bid of his own. To succeed in a national campaign, however, those close to Paul acknowledge that he must broaden his appeal beyond the tea party and libertarian-minded activists who rallied behind his father's long-shot presidential runs.
Paul offered a unique blend of what he called "libertarian-ish" politics while addressing Harvard University's Institute of Politics Friday afternoon.
"The Republican Party will adapt, evolve or die," Paul declared.
He railed against perceived civil liberties abuses in the Obama administration, while suggesting his party should focus less attention on social issues. He also said the GOP should abandon calls to deport millions of immigrants and offered that armed school officials might help prevent further mass shootings.
But more than what he said publicly, Paul's private actions on Friday marked a new step in his push to strengthen his political standing.
The freshman senator attended the luncheon at the private-equity firm Solamere Capital, a Boston-area company led by Romney's his former national finance chairman, Spencer Zwick, and Romney's oldest son, Tagg. Romney himself serves as a senior adviser to the firm and has an office there, although he did not attend the gathering.
Zwick arranged a private audience of just a dozen key members of Romney's inner circle, including senior advisers Beth Myers, Bob White and Ron Kaufman.
"This was meant to be a real discussion with people that I view can be very helpful," Zwick told The Associated Press, adding that Paul "was very well received" during an hour-and-a-half discussion about policy and politics over salad and fresh fruit.
"He always leaves people feeling more positive about him than they did going in," Kaufman said of Paul after the meeting.

To succeed in a national campaign, however, those close to Paul acknowledge that he must broaden his appeal beyond the tea party and libertarian-minded activists who rallied behind his fathers long-shot presidential runs.
Rons retired. Rons political career was obviously a help to Rand, but hes finished, said Doug Stafford, Rand Pauls former chief of staff who now leads his political action committee. This is about Rand.
The freshman senator attended the luncheon at the private-equity firm Solamere Capital, a Boston-area company led by Romney, his former national finance chairman Spencer Zwick and Romneys oldest son, Tagg. Later in the afternoon, Paul speaks to Harvard Universitys Institute of Politics, where one of Romneys most trusted aides serves as a fellow. He finishes his Boston swing by addressing a national conference of ophthalmologists, where he plans to draw from his personal experience as an eye doctor in an effort to broaden his image.
Paul has yet to announce his intentions for the 2016 presidential contest but says hes seriously considering a run.

Rand Paul confronts GOP divide in Maine
Posted: at 6:45 am
BANGOR, Maine (AP) Sen. Rand Paul faces a divided Republican Party as he arrives in Maine.
The Kentucky Republican is set to address the state Republican convention on Saturday, an annual event for GOP officials troubled by infighting since libertarian-minded activists loyal to Paul's father seized control of the state party. This year's theme is "unity," an optimistic note from party officials in Maine and Washington who suggest that things have improved in recent months.
But Paul's White House ambitions and Maine's Republican Gov. Paul LePage's re-election prospects may depend on whether the freshman U.S. senator can help mend divisions between his party's establishment and tea party wings as he eyes a presidential run in 2016.
No state showcases Paul's challenge more than Maine.
He hopes to promote further party unity ahead of the November re-election test for LePage, considered one of most endangered Republican governors in the nation. At the same time, Paul is pushing to strengthen his appeal beyond his father's passionate supporters to prove he can be a credible national candidate. He has yet to announce his 2016 intentions, but says he is seriously considering a run for president.
"The Republican Party will adapt, evolve or die," Paul declared in a speech at Harvard University's Institute of Politics on Friday as he worked to build new alliances with mainstream Republicans in Boston.
Before the speech, the freshman senator attended a private luncheon hosted by top lieutenants of former presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Romney's former national finance chairman Spencer Zwick arranged a private audience of just a dozen key members of Romney's inner circle.
"This was meant to be a real discussion with people that I view can be very helpful," Zwick told The Associated Press, adding that Paul "was very well received" during an hour-and-a-half discussion about policy and politics over salad and fresh fruit.
Paul's Maine audience will be larger and more rowdy.
After two tumultuous conventions that revealed cracks in the Maine GOP, party leaders are trying to build a strong, unified base that will shepherd in four more years for LePage, who rode tea party support to victory in 2010.

Aging linked to cellular interactions that occur across generations
Posted: at 6:44 am
The evidence for what causes aging has typically been limited to the study of a single organism's lifespan; our cells divide many times throughout our lives and eventually cause organs and our bodies to age and break down. But new research from the UNC School of Medicine suggests that how we age might depend on cellular interactions that we inherit from ancestors throughout many generations.
By studying the reproductive cells of nematodes -- tiny worms found in soil and compost bins -- Shawn Ahmed, PhD, an associate professor of genetics, identified the Piwi/piRNA genome silencing pathway, the loss of which results in infertility after many generations. He also found a signaling pathway -- a series of molecular interactions inside cells -- that he could tweak to overcome infertility while also causing the worms to live longer adult lives.
The research, in collaboration with researchers at the University of Cambridge and described in a paper published in the journal Cell Reports, suggests that it's possible to manipulate the aging process of progeny before they're even born.
The finding gives scientists a deeper understanding of what may govern aging and age-related diseases, such as some cancers and neurodegenerative conditions.
Typically, nematodes produce about 30 generations in a matter of months and remain fertile indefinitely. Ahmed and colleagues found that a mutation in the Piwi/piRNA cellular pathway of germ cells gradually decreased the worms' ability to reproduce as the mutation was passed down through the generations and eventually caused complete sterility. But when Ahmed's team manipulated a different protein -- DAF-16/FOXO -- the nematodes overcame the loss of the Piwi pathway. The worms did not become sterile; generations of worms reproduced indefinitely, achieving a sort of generational immortality. Moreover, it has been well established that DAF-16/FOXO plays a role in nematodes living longer.
Achieving longer life suggests that there's an effect on the aging of somatic cells -- the cells that make up the body and organs of an organism.
"That's the really interesting thing about this," said Ahmed, a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. "What we've found implies that there's some sort of relationship between somatic cell aging and this germ line immortality process we've been studying."
What that relationship is, precisely, remains unknown. But so does the exact mechanism by which human somatic cells age as they divide throughout our lives. That is, exactly how we age -- at the cellular level -- is still not entirely understood.
"The field is fairly open in terms of what might cause aging of somatic cells," Ahmed said. "What makes our study unique is that we've found something that could be transmitted over many generations that could affect aging but is not necessarily a genetic mutation. Instead, whatever is being transmitted likely affects how a segment of the genome is silenced, and that genome segment can be modulated by a genetic mutation."
Think of it like this: when you were born, there could have been something in the reproductive cells of your parents that triggered how the somatic cells of your liver or kidneys would age after you were born.

Post mortem evidence too 'graphic'
Posted: at 6:43 am
Video will begin in 5 seconds.
Oscar Pistorius gags and apparently throws up as he hears graphic descriptions of the post-mortem of his dead girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Oscar Pistorius repeatedly vomited, retched and sobbed through the sixth day of his murder trial as a forensic pathologist revealed the bullets the Olympian used to shoot his girlfriend were designed to cause maximum damage to human tissue.
Professor Gert Saayman, who conducted the autopsy on Ms Steenkamp, told the court the model died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, with three bullets striking her hip, upper arm and her head.
But while there is expected to be some dispute as to the order in which the bullets struck Ms Steenkamp, the professor said at least two of the three wounds could have proved fatal on their own.
Distressed ... Oscar Pistorius cries as he talks to his attorney Barry Roux, right, after listening to evidence during his trial in Pretoria. Photo: AP Photo
Her right upper arm was shattered, the hip wound could likely have killed her very quickly and the head wound would have incapacitated her immediately, he said.

A lack of blood in her airways indicated Ms Steenkamp had probably only taken a few breaths before she succumbed to the head wound, the pathologist said.
Pistorius loudly retched and his body appeared to shake as Professor Saayman clinically described how a bullet entered Steenkamps head, fragmenting and exiting her skull in two places.
