Ron Paul warns of Waco-like end to Nevada ranch fiasco

Posted: at 4:43 pm

Former Rep. Ron Paul is warning Americans of a Waco-like end to the standoff between rancher Cliven Bundy and the federal government, saying that even though the armed agents have left the land, the atmosphere is still heated.

Im hoping this is a very positive sign of things to come, where the people stand up and object to the federal governments intrusion into our lives and everything we do, Mr. Paul said, during an interview on Your World on Fox News, during which he spoke about the standoff between Mr. Bundys family and supporters, and the Bureau of Land Management agents.

And when the people do get together and stand up, the governments will be forced to back down, he continued, Breitbart reported. But the other thing is governments dont give up their power easily, and they may well come back with a lot more force, like they did at Waco with the Davidians. So I dont know which way its going, but so far so good.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid warned just this week that though the federal government has removed its agents from the Bundy property, the issue is far from ended.

Mr. Paul, meanwhile, said he hoped that the situation would continue in peace.

I was delighted they got through the couple days, and there wasnt any shooting or killing, he said, Breitbart reported. I really encourage the demonstration against unfairness by our government, but Id like to see it all nonviolent, and that weekend so far turned out to be a good step.

MSNBCers Tackle Bundy Standoff: Thats Not Libertarianism, Its Anarchy

Posted: at 4:43 pm

On Morning Joe Tuesday morning, the panel considered the Cliven Bundy scandal, in which a rancher who has refused two decades worth of court orders to pay land grazing fees to the government for his use of public land mounted a standoff against the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Host Joe Scarborough said that the BLM could have handled this much better, but that those criticizing the government needed to criticize Bundy as well.

If you had the idea anyone that has cattle could just let them off grazing anywhere, its not libertarianism, MJ-regular Katty Kay said. Its anarchy.

For some reason this guy thinks that the laws that apply to every other rancher in the United States of America dont apply to him, Scarborough said. Even people on the further boundaries of the right and the conservative movement think that if this guy is going to use federal land, then this guy should actually pay the fees.

Theres no doubt the Bureau of Land Management overreacted, Scarborough added. This could have been handled much betterYou dont go around tasing people or sticking guns in peoples faces. But at the same time I would like to hear some people that are criticizing the Bureau of Land Management also suggest to this man he does what every other rancher in the United States of America does.

Google invents smart contact lens with built-in camera: Superhuman Terminator-like vision here we come

Posted: at 4:42 pm

Google has invented a new smart contact lens with an integrated camera. The camera would be very small and sit near the edge of the contact lens so that it doesnt obscure your vision. By virtue of being part of the contact lens, the camera would naturally follow your gaze, allowing for a huge range of awesome applications, from the basis of a bionic eye system for blind and visually impaired people, through to early warning systems (the camera spots a hazard before your brain does), facial recognition, and superhuman powers (telescopic and infrared/night vision). In related news, Google Glass is publicly available today in the US for one day only (still priced at $1500).

This new smart contact lens would have a tiny CMOS camera sensor just below your pupil, control circuit, and some method of receiving power wirelessly (more on that later). Because an imaging sensor, by definition, has to absorb light, it wouldnt be transparent but it could probably be color matched to your iris, so that your eyes dont look too freaky.

Beyond the medical- and consumer-oriented applications, you can also imagine the possibilities if police were equipped with contact lenses that could spot criminal faces in a crowd, or a bulge under a jacket that could be a concealed weapon. Oh, and the most exciting/deadly application of them all: Soldiers with smart contact lenses that alert them to incoming fire, provide infrared vision that can see through smoke, real-time range finding for more accurate sniping

A contact lens display in a rabbits eye (way back in 2011)

This invention, from the Google X skunkworks lab, comes in the form of a patent that was filed in 2012 and was recently published by the US PTO. Earlier this year, Google announced that it was working ona smart contact lens for diabetics that provides a real-time glucose level reading from your tears. As far as we can tell, theres no timeline for real-world trials of either variety of contact lens but we can tell you that the technology to create such devices is very nearly here. Way back in 2011, a smart contact lens with an LED display was trialed in the lab.

Moving forward, there are some concerns about power delivery (theres no space for a battery, of course, so it has to be beamed in wirelessly), and whether its wise to have a wireless device implanted in a rather sensitive organ, but I dont think these will be game-breaking problems. For now, were talking about fairly chunky contact lenses that are best suited to laboratory testing but it shouldnt be more than a few years until real, comfortable smart contact lenses come to market.

Angry With UK, China Cancels Human Rights Dialogue

Posted: at 4:42 pm

Chinese authorities scrapped their human rights dialogue with the U.K. government recently, citing irresponsible and careless remarks by the United Kingdom on human rights conditions in China.

A recent report on rights in China by the U.K. government was said to have engaged in unreasonable slander and criticism.

The Human Rights and Democracy Report 2013, published by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office on April 10,identified China as a country of concern.

The reportincludes the same basic description of human rights conditions in China that is provided by international human rights groups and other Western governments, including the United States.

Chinas economic growth continues to contribute to improved economic and social rights for many Chinese citizens, the report observes in its opening lines. However, civil and political rights remain subject to significant restrictions.

The section on China then goes over the most prominent cases of human rights abuse in the past year. It even includes guarded acknowledgement of some advances in human rights in China, such as promises, made in November (though since rescinded) that China would stop using organs from executed prisoners for transplant.

Chinas foreign ministry did not specify which part of the report was irresponsible and careless.

Hua Chunying, the foreign ministry spokesperson, however, gave some insight into the Chinese regimes thinking behind cancelling the dialogue with the U.K.

When engaging in dialogue between people, and between countries, Hua said, in a question and answer with reports that was published online, the principle of equality and mutual respect should be followed. The purpose is to, through dialogue, improve understanding, increase mutual trust, and promote cooperation.

Descriptions of abuses of human rights of Chinese citizens by Communist Party security forces do not appear to be in accord with this spirit, according to the Chinese view. Hua said that reports like those by the UK use the excuse of human rights to interfere in Chinas internal politics and the sovereignty of its judicial system.

Guardian, Washington Post win Pulitzers

Posted: at 4:42 pm

Reporting on the leaks not only sparked international debate over the limits of government surveillance but prompted President Barack Obama to introduce curbs on NSA spying powers.

"We are particularly grateful for our colleagues across the world who supported the Guardian in circumstances which threatened to stifle our reporting," Guardian Editor in Chief Alan Rusbridger said in a statement.

"And we share this honor, not only with our colleagues at The Washington Post, but also with Edward Snowden, who risked so much in the cause of the public service which has today been acknowledged by the award of this prestigious prize," he said.

Russia granted Snowden temporary asylum last year after the U.S. Justice Department charged him with violating the Espionage Act.

In giving Reuters its first Pulitzer for text coverage, the board commended Jason Szep and Andrew R.C. Marshall for their "courageous reports" on the Rohingya, who in their efforts to flee the Southeast Asian country often fall victim to human-trafficking networks.

"For two years, Reuters reporters have tirelessly investigated terrible human-rights abuses in a forgotten corner of the Muslim world, bringing the international dimensions of the oppressed Rohingya of Myanmar to global attention," Stephen Adler, Reuters editor-in-chief, said in a statement.

Szep, from Washington, said: "What we were writing about was under-reported. I hope through this, there is greater international attention to the risks and presence of religious violence in Myanmar."

Activists to Hold Tax Rally

Posted: at 4:42 pm

EUGENE, Ore. Local activists will rally in front of the downtown post office on Tuesday, with the message that taxes should pay for human needs, not war.

Every year, local activists rally in front of the post office on tax day. Theyre asking taxpayers where they think their tax dollars should be spent, and they set up something called a penny poll.

Organizers give each person ten pennies to drop into jars representing different budget categories. Those include human resources, physical resources, general government, military and paying down the debt.

Activists say each year, the results are consistent. About 50 percent of participants would like to see their tax dollars go toward human resources, compared to about 3 percent for the military. But the reality is the biggest chunk of your money, about 42 cents of every income tax dollar, goes to fund the military.

Activists believe that money should be redirected to local organizations like Sponsors, ShelterCare and Occupy Medical.

The rally is expected to be peaceful, with a group of about 50 activists. The penny poll begins at 11 a.m., followed by the rally at 12 p.m., where there will be music and speakers.
