Ron Paul: Putin Has Law on His Side with Crimean Invasion

Posted: March 13, 2014 at 11:41 pm

Former Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) appeared on the Fox Business Networks The Independents on Wednesday night where he was asked for his thoughts about the worsening situation in Ukraines Crimean peninsula. Paul said that the United States and the West have engaged in hypocrisy and alleged that they participated in the overthrow of Viktor Yanukovichs government. He added that Russian President Vladimir Putin has some law on his side in Crimea because Russia held a lease on a naval base in the Crimean city of Sevastopol.

This whole thing that Putin is the big cause of the trouble, and yet theres pretty good evidence that the Europeans as well as the American government had to contrive to have the overthrow of a government that most people say had been elected, Paul asserted.

And then for them to come along and say, Well, its an illegal government, and they want to have a referendum now, you know, in Crimea, Oh, no, thats not permissible, Paul continued. Everything that Putin does is illegal. Hes no angel, but actually he has some law on his side.

Paul asserted that contracts, and agreements, and treaties associated with the Sevastopol base provide Putin with the legal basis to militarily occupy the peninsula. He said that Russia could accuse America of occupying Cuba because it, too, holds a lease on the land around the Guantanamo Bay prison.

Its such a faade, he continued.

Host Matt Welch asked if Crimeas snap referendum, scheduled to be held on Sunday, could really be considered legitimate given that it is being orchestrated by an occupational government in the shadow of the Russian government amassing forces on the Ukrainian border.

Yeah, Paul said. I dont think we should do all that threatening. Welch attempted to clarify his question, but Paul went on to say that the Crimean invasion is being used as an excuse to erect interceptor missiles in Russias backyard.

There should be a right of secession, Paul concluded. He said America has a tradition of secession and Crimea should have it as well.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks – Science NetLinks

Posted: at 11:41 pm

Purpose

To explore the issue of ethics in medical research and, in particular, the issue of informed consent, in the context of Henrietta Lacks and the HeLa cells.

This lesson uses the book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, written by Rebecca Skloot, which is one of the winners of the 2011 SB&F Prize for Excellence in Science Books. SB&F, Science Books & Films, is a project of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

The ubiquitous cell line HeLa (whose immortality provides the book title) has helped power the explosive growth of cell biology for more than 50 years. But for all that is known about the cells themselves, most people know little if anything about the history and the woman behind these cells. In her book, investigative reporter Skloot explores the mystery behind HeLa cells (pronounced hee la), her obsession with telling the real truth about Henrietta Lacks, and the scientists, doctors, and institutions involved in this fascinating story that revolves around Lacks cervical cancer cells.

Its a story the students wont soon forget, which is exactly what happened to Rebecca Skloot. She first heard about HeLa cells at age 16 while attending a community college biology class. Her professor told the class that HeLa cells were the most famous cells ever, and that they came from an African American woman who died of cervical cancer. That was all he knew, and Skloot immediately wanted to know who the donor was, where she came from, if her family knew her cells were still alive, and what her real name was. (Until Skloots book, Lacks was pretty much anonymous.)

Years went by before Skloot had the resources to pursue this mystery, but once she started uncovering the story, she didnt give up, and a decade of research resulted in this award-winning book.

In this lesson, students will read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and learn what bioethics is and how it has influenced cellular research from the 1950s until now. They will learn what informed consent is and its importance to researchers and patients. They will learn how a major piece of science history has impacted their lives on an individual level. And although they may have heard about the Tuskegee Syphilis Study (which took place at the same time and institution as Lacks story), they also will gain a better understanding of the history behind that medical experiment and its influence on current ethics.

Students should begin this lesson with a basic knowledge about what cells are and how they function. If you feel that your students need to review this knowledge, askthem to answer the questions on the Explaining DNA student sheet in the Extracting DNA science lesson. This student sheet also asks students to create a poster explaining DNA to someone unfamiliar with it.

Ideas in this lesson are also related to concepts found in these Common Core State Standards:

Using the HeLa student esheet, students should begin this lesson by reading Henrietta Lacks' Immortal Cells, which is an interview with the author that summarizes the book and the story behind HeLa cells.

Transhuman Space – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Posted: at 11:41 pm

Transhuman Space is a role-playing game published by Steve Jackson Games as parts of the "Powered by GURPS" (Generic Universal Role-Playing System) line. Set in the year 2100, humanity has begun to colonize the Solar System. The pursuit of transhumanism is now in full swing, as more and more people struggle to reach a fully posthuman state.

Transhuman Space was one of the first role-playing games to tackle postcyberpunk and transhumanist themes.[citation needed] In 2002, the Transhuman Space adventure "Orbital Decay" received an Origins Award nomination for Best Role-Playing Game Adventure. Transhuman Space won the 2003 Grog d'Or Award for Best Role-playing Game, Game Line or RPG Setting.[1]

The game assumes that no cataclysm natural or human-induced swept Earth in the 21st century. Instead, constant developments in information technology, genetic engineering, nanotechnology and nuclear physics generally improved condition of the average human life. Plagues of the 20th century (like cancer or AIDS) have been suppressed, the ozone layer is being restored and Earth's ecosystems are recovering (although thermal emission by fusion power plants poses an environmental threatalbeit a much lesser one than previous sources of energy). Thanks to modern medicine humans live biblical timespans surrounded by various artificially intelligent helper applications and robots (cybershells), sensory experience broadcasts (future TV) and cyberspace telepresence. Thanks to cheap and clean fusion energy humanity has power to fuel all these wonders, restore and transform its home planet and finally settle on other heavenly bodies.

Human genetic engineering has advanced to the point that anyonesingle individuals, same-sex couples, groups of three or morecan reproduce. The embryos can be allowed to be developed naturally, or they can undergo three levels of tinkering: 1. Genefixing, which corrects defects; 2. Upgrades, which boost natural abilities (Ishtar Upgrades are slightly more attractive than usual, Metanoia Upgrades are more intelligent, etc.); and... 3. Full transition to parahuman status (Nyx Parahumans only need a few hours of sleep per week, Aquamorphs can live underwater, etc.) Another type of human genetic engineering, far more controversial, is the creation of bioroids, fully sentient slave races.

People can "upload" by recording the contents of their brains on computer disks. The individual then becomes a ghost, an infomorph very easily confused with "sapient artificial intelligence". However, this technology has several problems as the solely available "brainpeeling" technique is fatal to the original person, has a significant failure rate and the philosophical questions regarding personal identity remain equivocal. Any infomorph, regardless of its origin, can be plugged into a "cybershell", or a biological body, or "bioshell". Or, the individual can illegally make multiple "xoxes", or copies of themselves, and scatter them throughout the system, exponentially increasing the odds that at least one of them will live for centuries more, if not forever.

This is also a time of space colonization. First, humanity (specifically China, followed by the United States and others) colonized Mars in a fashion resembling that outlined in the Mars Direct project. The Moon, Lagrangian points, inner planets and asteroids soon followed. In the late 21st century even some of Saturn's moons have been settled as a base for that planet's Helium-3 scooping operations.

This is no utopia, however: several problems have arisen from these otherwise beneficial developments. The Generation gap has become a chasm as lifespans increase. No longer do the elite fear death, and no longer can the young hope to replace them. While it seemed that outworld colonies would offer accommodation and work for those young ones, they are being replaced by genetically tailored bioroids and AI-powered cybershells. The concept of humanity is no longer clear in a world where even some animals speak of their rights and the dead haunt both cyberspace and reality (in form of infomorph-controlled bioshells or cybershells).

And the wonders of high science are not universally shared some countries merely struggle with informatization while others suffer from nanoplagues, defective drugs, implants and software tested on their populace. In some poor countries high-tech tyrants oppress their backward people. And in outer space all sort of modern crime thrives, barely suppressed by military forces.

After the initial set of GURPS books which included GURPS Lite in them, later publications such as Transhuman Space by David Pulver were labelled "Powered by GURPS" without including "GURPS" in the book title, primarily to make it easier for fans to find the books at mass-market retailers.[2]Transhuman Space was well supported by an extensive game line, and was the first major original background produced by Steve Jackson Games in 15 years.[2] The books inclusion of posthuman characters began to show the limits of the current GURPS system, which is something that Pulver would address soon thereafter.[2]

INDIGENOUS LEADER. Vicky Tauli-Copruz (front row, 5th from right) was the former chair of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Photo from Corpuz's Facebook page

MANILA, Philippines The field of contenders for the position of United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous People was extremely strong, according to Human Rights Council (HRC) president Baudelaire Ndong Ella, but in the end the nominee from the Philippines prevailed.

Vicky Tauli-Corpuz, a proud Igorot from the Kankana-ey tribe in Besao, Mountain Province, will be the first woman and indigenous person from the Philippines to assume the position previously held by men.

Vicky is a very experienced advocate at the United Nations level and establishes a welcome commitment to gender equity in this important post for indigenous peoples of the world, Ella said when he announced Corpuzs selection on March 3.

Corpuz helped push for the adoption of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in 2007 while she was the chairperson of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), also the first Filipina to assume the post.

As a special rapporteur, Corpuz will report on the human rights situations of various indigenous peoples (IP) around the world, address violations of their rights through communications with governments, and promote good practices on indigenous rights protection.

Created by the UN Commission on Human Rights in 1991, the position was renewed by the HRC in 2007.

What is a Futurist? – wiseGEEK

Posted: at 11:40 pm

Futurists are those who attempt to predict and analyze the future. There are professional futurists, who do futurism for a living, as well as amateur futurists, who look at the future in their particular area of interest. The arguments for modern futurism emerged in the mid-40s, pioneered by the German Ossip K. Flechtheim, who said that even if we can determine the most basic statistical trends and plot them a couple decades in advance, we'd be generating valuable information for society to use. Many large organizations now employ futurists and scenario planners, to help them get an edge on their competition.

The task of the futurist begins with looking at historical data, extracting regularities, and projecting those trends a bit, if only to see what numbers pop out. For example, the human population has doubled roughly every 34 years for the last hundred years or so, and while the rate of doubling has slowed down slightly in recent times, it makes sense to assume that the general trend will continue, if even the doubling time is extended to, say, every 40 years. General and uncontroversial statistical trends like these are the canvas on the futurist paints more speculative projections. Futurists must be careful about any wild assumptions in the basics, lest they incur the ire of those who pay them to make serious prognostications.

After putting together a general idea of the next 5, 10, or 20 years, a futurist will often engage in "scenario building" - formulating concrete scenarios and classifying them on the basis of their likelihood. For example, "probable," "possible," and "wild card" scenarios. These help the company or organization in question choose their actions cleverly in the present so as to give rise to the future of their choice. For example, one might say it is probable that we will do the majority of our shopping online in 20 years, but improbable that the majority of work will be conducted in virtual worlds.

Certain scientists tend to get excited about futurism. As science describes the world around us with more precision and empirical support than the guesses of most laypeople, scientists are frequently part-time futurists. Because many scientists work on tiny pieces of small problems, they like to sketch a look at the bigger picture, and describe to the public how their little corner of research is a small part of a much larger useful effort. For example, a researcher working on a new nanotech film may suggest that his work could one day be used to filter water for children in developing countries. This is a primary example of a futurist, even if the person doesn't call themselves one. Futurists go by many names - but in the end, anyone who looks forward more than about 5 years deserves to be called as such.
