Rand Paul vs. Ted Cruz: Why one of them is winning over the press

The two freshmen senators are media magnets, brash brand-builders often at odds with their party as they eye a White House run.

But Rand Paul and Ted Cruz are starting to draw very different treatment from the press. Paul is getting positive coverage, sometimes grudgingly, while Cruz is increasingly being portrayed as a difficult loner.

Its not about their ideology both Republicans are staunch conservatives as much as their style. And style counts a great deal with the Beltway pundits.

Take, for instance, this National Journal piece declaring Paul the GOPs early front-runner. However ephemeral the designation, this is remarkable, given that the Kentucky senator was originally viewed as an extension of his father, perennial candidate Ron Paul, whose hard-line libertarianism was often dismissed by the media as part of a fringe movement.

But Rand Paul is not his dad. The story begins with a slap that practically casts Paul as unelectable, but gives him his due:

John Stossel Future of libertarianism bright, thanks to Students for Liberty

Posted: at 4:41 pm

Recently, some 1,500 students from all over the world gathered to discuss freedom at the Students for Liberty Conference in Washington, D.C.

Economist Donald Boudreaux showed the students a department store catalog from 1958 to underscore how the free market, while contributing to income inequality, also dramatically improved the lives of the poor: "The typical American worker back then had to work 30 hours to buy this vacuum cleaner. Today, a worker has to work only six hours to buy a much better vacuum cleaner. And that's true for clothing, food, all sorts of things."

That's how free markets work: quietly, gradually improving things. That doesn't always appeal to impatient young people or to radical old people who fancy themselves social engineers who should shape the world.

Such social engineering is revered on campuses. A student from Quebec complained that economists about whom his fellow students learn are "Keynesians, who believe that breaking windows is good for the economy, or neoclassicals, who believe in unrealistic assumptions like perfect competition and perfect information."

If there were a part of America for which the American students at this conference felt a special pride, it was the Constitution. "The Constitution of the United States is a promise about how government power will be used," Timothy Sandefur, author of "The Conscience of the Constitution," told them. "A promise was left to us by a generation who lived under tyrannical government and decided they needed a framework that would preserve the blessings of liberty."

These students appreciated that inheritance, although they said the Constitution is rarely discussed at their schools. They surprised me by knowing the correct answer to my question: How often is the word "democracy" used in the Constitution?

Answer: never. The founders understood that democracy may bring mob rule tyranny of a majority. So the Constitution focuses on restricting government to secure individual liberty.

If anything, these students were stauncher in their defense of liberty than the Founders.

Kelly Kidwell, a sophomore from Tulane University, said, "Regardless of what its intent was, we still have the (big) government that we have now so the Constitution has either provided for that government, or failed to prevent it."

That's an argument that libertarian economist Murray Rothbard used to make. He took the pessimistic view that the Constitution's "limited government" was an experiment that had already failed, since 200 years later, government was barely limited at all. He concluded that libertarians should be not just constitutionalists but anarchists get rid of government completely.

Catholic Social Doctrine Can Help Rescue Aging Societies

Posted: at 4:41 pm

A Reflection on Recent Rome Conference on Aging and Disability Rome, February 27, 2014 (Zenit.org) Fr. Joseph Tham, LC, MD, PhD | 93 hits

Aging and Disability was the topic of the 20th General Assembly of the Pontifical Academy for Life held last week in Rome.

With the advance of medical technology, there is a longer life expectancy worldwide. Along with increased lifespan, there will also be greater number of elderly with some sort of disability.

Globally speaking, there are actually more people over the age of 60 than under the age of five. By 2030, there will be more people in the over 60 age group than the under 10 age group. The WHO estimates about 1 billion individuals are disabled worldwide of which 25% of them are elderly.

Many of the disabilities are also lifestyle related, and with age these are often related to strokes, heart diseases, diabetes, arthritis, dementia and their consequences. Morbidity is related to availability of healthcare and poverty.

As a result of increasing number of elderly and disabled persons, many countries are faced with the problem of rising budget to care for them. Everywhere, concerns regarding allocation, accessibility, quality and financial sustainability are raised. There is fear that this problem will eventually implode with great social unrest in the near future.

Catholic Social Doctrine can come to the rescue with the principles of solidarity and subsidiarity. The former can promote networking with family and kinship as organic social structures as alternative to governmental aid. Subsidiarity also calls for decentralization and demedicalization of old age and this might offer relief. Several speakers also mention the need to change the mode of healthcare delivery with a greater emphasis on prevention and education.

The elderly and disabled are considered weak and vulnerable groups in society. The modern mindset is faced with two difficult and sometimes contradictory responses. On the one hand, the emphasis on care, justice and non-discrimination demands a greater attention to those in need. On the other hand, the hedonistic and utilitarian mentality which exalts perfection and perpetual youthfulness has a difficult time accepting the fragility and dependency of these groups. The latter emphasize our autonomy and self-fulfillment can lead to a promotion of euthanasia and assisted suicide as the solution to their diminished capacity.

This ambivalence is noted in the 2008 UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. While there are positive elements that are mentioned in the protection of the disabled, the convention was not signed by the Holy See because it affirms for the first time a fundamental right to abortion.

French ethicist Marie Jo Thiel speaks of the need to have a paradigm shift with regards to people with disabilities, to look of them not only as needful and vulnerable, but also to empower them through human rights and an ethic of care that recognizes them as our fellow brothers and sisters.

Moogfest, a decade-old music festival named after Moog synthesizer creator Robert Moog, is continuing to expand far beyond its electronic-music roots.

For this year's shindig, attendees can jam out to headliners Pet Shop Boys, M.I.A. and Kraftwerk 3D at night but also enjoy a robust infusion of daytime programming to learn about new technologies, art, math, science and future concepts all timely topics that jibe with Moog's creative spirit. Moogfest takes place from April 23 to 27 in Asheville, N.C.

Among the sessions is "The Math and Science of The Simpsons and Futurama."

"Futurama and electronic music are both subjects where super nerdy and marginally cool meet," David X. Cohen, Futurama's executive producer, told Mashable. Though Cohen has an bachelor's degree in physics and a master's degree in computer science, he said his panel's goal is to entertain, but "if they get some education then that's an added bonus."

Moogfest organizers echo the extra-education sentiment, as they've strived to build a lineup of sessions, workshops and film screenings that will thrill just as much as the musicians.

"With his lifelong dedication to using technology to empower musicians, Robert Moog is a patron saint of the nerdy arts," said Google Doodle team leader Ryan Germick, who is part of the "Google and the Future of Audio" panel. "We couldn't be more pleased to honor his legacy and continue the kinds of conversations he started."

Below, you can find a full list of daytime programming, which Moogfest shared first with Mashable, along with a limited-time discounted ticket price ($99 for a 5-day pass instead of $299, until Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. ET) for our readers who use the code "MASHMF" when registering on Ticketmaster.
