Despite recent challenges, Outback seeking support from town

Posted: February 27, 2014 at 4:43 pm

Amid recent scandals and a potential budget cut, the Outback Teen Center's board of directors has started an online petition asking the town to support the facility.

The move comes weeks after the town's Health and Human Services Department announced it was cutting its annual contribution to the Outback by 12.5 percent. If the budget is approved as is, the Outback would receive $17,500 from the town for 2014-15. Last year, it received $20,000, and the year before it got $28,000.

"This will negatively impact the longevity of the Center," the petition states. "Close to $2 million was invested by parents and the community to build the facility 12 years ago, and it would be a travesty to lose it. By signing this petition you are indicating that you value the Outback and consider it an important asset for our youth and community."

The $17,500 must still be approved by the Board of Finance and Town Council, though the latter does not have the power to increase any budgets.

Outback's Community Director Christine Simmons said the amount the Human Services Department is proposing to give them represents less than a 10th of the center's $250,000 annual budget. The rest of the funding is raised through private donations. Percentage wise, the center receives a smaller town contribution than do the teen centers in Darien and Wilton, according to Outback documents.

"It is very difficult to provide programming for our young people with the town support of less than 9 percent of the Outback's budgeted income," Simmons said. "Our Outback board members and our Outback staff work hard and devote many hours of time to raise money for operating expenses and programs."

Human Services Director Carol McDonald declined to comment specifically why her department has decided to cut funding for the Outback, but she said it supports the teen center.

"Human Services supports all the Outback's endeavors," she said in an email. "Our Youth Services staff continues to work jointly with them as well as other youth providers in New Canaan."

Dividing the pie

In a January presentation to the town governing bodies, McDonald said the department did the best it could to shift money around instead of requesting a big increase. Her department is requesting a $690,554 budget for 2014-15, a 1.5 percent increase over 2013-14.

CNIO researchers discover new strategies for the treatment of psoriasis

Almost ten years ago, the group led by Erwin Wagner, currently at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), developed genetically modified mice showing symptoms very reminiscent to psoriasis. After publishing this discovery in Nature, the researchers decided to use this mouse model to study the underlying molecular pathways involved in disease development, and to look for innovative and efficient therapies. Now the group has discovered two possible novel treatments, based on existing pharmacological compounds, which are likely to cause fewer side effects.

Psoriasis affects up to 3% of the world's population and can seriously affect the quality of life of these patients. The primary causes are largely unknown and the disease is not curable. The latest generation of drugs developed to combat it - so-called biological therapies - are thought to be a big step forward, but can only be applied for limited periods of time due to serious side effects, which can generate other forms of psoriasis, or even cause tuberculosis or leukaemia. Due to this it is important for psoriatic patients to develop efficient non-toxic treatments.

The two new strategies now published by CNIO researchers are the result of in-depth studies of the disease biology that have revealed some of the underlying molecular causes.

In the first study published in the December issue of the high impact journal Immunity, it is shown how the symptoms of psoriasis disappear by deleting a protein called S100A9. In the second article, which is published in Science Translational Medicine, the researchers show that inhibiting a non-coding micro RNA, named miR-21, ameliorates the disease symptoms.

As Helia Schnthaler, the first author, and collegues write in Immunity: "over the past decade, biological therapies have been shown to be effective against inflammatory diseases. These treatments, however, are a cause of worry due to their side effects, which might cause a possible increase in the risk of infection or cancer. The development of efficient, locally applicable drugs without these side effects, therefore would be beneficial for patients with psoriasis". Specifically, S100A9 inhibiting strategies "have the potential to become effective new treatments against psoriasis", the authors state.

In the article in Science Translational Medicine, which features Juan Guinea-Viniegra as the lead author, the authors state that: "blocking miR-21 could offer advantages over current treatments given that the efficiency obtained is the same and the side effects are probably reduced". The authors highlight that in the mouse model and in patient samples transplanted into mice this new strategy "shows a significant therapeutic response".

Helia Schnthaler and Juan Guinea-Viniegra are members of the group of Erwin Wagner, who is the director of the F-BBVA-CNIO Cancer Cell Biology Programme.

Ovarian Cancer Gene May Point to Early Removal of Ovaries: Study

Posted: at 4:42 pm

By Steven Reinberg HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, Feb. 24, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Women who carry a BRCA1 gene mutation and have their ovaries removed by age 35 appear to dramatically reduce their odds of developing ovarian cancer and dying, a new international study finds.

Having this procedure, called oophorectomy, may reduce the odds of dying by age 70 by about 77 percent, researchers say. Women who have BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations are at greater risk of developing breast and/or ovarian cancer.

"We have a strong basis to recommend that women who have a BRCA1 mutation really benefit from having an oophorectomy, and they should have it by age 35," said lead researcher Dr. Steven Narod, a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto, in Canada.

Women with BRCA2 mutations can delay surgery until they're 40, since their risk of ovarian cancer is not as strong, he added.

The procedure made news last year when film star Angelina Jolie, a carrier of the BRCA1 mutation, announced plans to have her ovaries removed. Previously, she had undergone a preventive double mastectomy. Jolie's mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian cancer at the age of 56.

Study author Narod noted that the benefits of the surgery outweigh the side effects. Those side effects include menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes and sleep disturbances, which can be managed by hormone replacement therapy, he said.

Other side effects may include a small increase in the risk for heart disease and possibly memory and thinking problems. Of course, removing the ovaries means not having children, but by 35 the women could have already started a family, Narod said.

The real challenge, Narod added, is getting women screened for BRCA mutations. Most women who have these mutations don't know they have them. "Probably only one in 300 women carry these mutations," he said.

"If we are going to get the full impact, it's important that more women get tested," Narod said. But making genetic testing more available means lowering the cost from around $1,000 to $100, he added.
