West Liberty Running Contest to Entice Upper End Restaurant
Posted: at 11:43 pm
WEST LIBERTY, Iowa- The Muscatine County community of West Liberty is making an unusual offer to would-be chefs or current restaurant owners. Convince us you have the best plan to succeed with a new, fancier restaurant in a small town and well provide more than $100,000 in cash and start up assistance to make your culinary dream come true.
West Liberty was recently selected by Iowas Best Bite Restaurant Challengea marketing group based in Grinnell that seeks to connect chefs with rural communities. The communities of Oskaloosa and Grinnell ran similar restaurant competitions in past years. The restaurants started there are still operating.
Shannon McNaul, executive director of the We Lead economic development group in West Liberty, said the community has an empty restaurant building in nearly turnkey readiness to open as an upscale restaurant. A restaurant called the New Century Grill operated out of a century-old bank building in downtown West Liberty for only a year. It went out of business in 2010. But all of the tables, chairs and restaurant equipment remain and would be offered as part of the prize package to attract a new operator.
I think well have some people with a burning desire to open up their own businessan entrepreneur. But it could be a chef from another town who wants a quieter life, a different environment to cook in, McNaul said.
McNaul said the community is prepared to offer the winning entry $2,500 in startup capital, the use of more than $70,000 in commercial grade restaurant equipment as well as six months free rent and reduced rent for another 30 months. Economic developers would assist with marketing and other promotion. Organizers estimate the value of the community donations to get the restaurant up at running at $117,000.
Bob and Karel Cline, long time West Liberty residents, said they both enjoyed going to New Century Grill, the former restaurant that operated in the old bank building for just a year. They believe the community would support a new upper end restaurant.
Karel Cline said the idea of a contest, with a big payoff, could draw interest from a wider area.
I think theyll first be surprised its a contest. Then theyre going to love it, I just think they will, she said.
In addition to a contest application, judge are also going to be looking for would-be operators to submit a business plan explaining what kind of an upscale restaurant would succeed in the community of 4,000 people. The deadline for entries is June 16th with a semifinals and finals competition set for July 8th and 9th. The two finalists will come to West Liberty for a cook off for the judges and community to help determine a winner.
Organizers said potential restaurant operators can learn more about the competition at either http://www.iowasbestbite.com or on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/iowasbestbite.

Carmelo Anthony says All-Star weekend a chance to decompress, not recruit
Posted: at 11:43 pm
I know this ruins a lot of conspiracy theories and the Internet loves a conspiracy (did you know the Illuminati Controls the Red Cross?) but when NBA players get together this weekend for the All-Star Game in New Orleans they are not spending time plotting their next free agent moves together.
Not even close. They may have casual discussions while in the VIP area of a club you cant access, but the conversation more like you and your buddies sitting around watching football and saying, we should totally go skiing in Aspen together next year. Theres a slim chance you get it together and pull the trip off, but most likely that comment is as far as it goes.
Dont take my word for it, listen to Carmelo Anthony. He can be a free agent and the New York Post asked if All-Star Weekend is like a college recruiting trip.
I think All-Star weekend is just a time where you can relax, decompress, kind of reflect on the first half of the season and gear up for the second half of the season, Anthony said, noting tales of recruiting as always, as always are blown out of proportion. As far as recruiting and things like that, that never happens.
A lot of guys especially the people I call friends, the people I talk to its more making sure Im all right, making sure Im keeping my head up, making sure Im staying positive, said Anthony who takes his 27.1-point, second-best NBA scoring average against Sacramento in the Knicks pre-All-Star finale Wednesday at the Garden. Its not, Whatcha gonna do? or You should do this or you should do that. Its more just being there during this time.
Players talk all the time about what its like playing for a team or a city, or about agents, or about women, or about a lot of other things. Sure, some of that is hey, we should try to play together but at the end of the day they will play where they can make the most money, feel the most comfortable and can win. If that works out with guys they like, great.
But sorry, there just is no great conspiracy going on behind your back with player movement. So you guys in the tin foil hats can return to focusing on how even retired David Stern will control the referees and the outcomes of playoff games. Obviously, Stern is high up in the Illuminati.

Why three indies built a one-of-a-kind text adventure in Unity
Posted: at 11:41 pm
Second Amendment is a short text adventure written in Unity 3D. An unwieldy mashing together of QWOP-like, one-finger typing and straight-laced storytelling, the game is almost certainly one-of-a-kind.
Gamasutra recently tracked down Second Amendment's three developers -- Ramiro Corbetta, Jane Friedhoff and K. Anthony Marefat -- to get the inside story on how such an unconventional game came about.
Gamasutra: Just to start out, would you mind sharing a bit about your respective backgrounds?
Ramiro Corbetta: Im the old guy in the group, I guess. Ive been making games professionally since about 2005. Right now I'm working on Hokra, which is part of Sportsfriends -- that should be coming out in February or March, or so I hope. However, the three of us met through Parsons The New School for Design, particularly the design and technology MFA program.
Jane Friedhoff: Ramiro worked with me on my thesis game for Parsons, Vici. I also made a little thing called Hermit Crab in Space, which was part of the IndieCade East game jam and went on to be an IndieCade finalist.
K. Anthony Marefat: Im currently attending Parsons in the same program Jane and Ramiro went through. Compared to them, Im a relative newcomer in the whole indie game design thing. Code and I got along really well [when I was growing up] and I took a liking to programming, participating in jams and working on little projects here and there. As the credits on Second Amendment suggest, this is the first official game that Ive released.
RC: And clearly, Second Amendment is our masterpiece. [laughs]
Gamasutra: How did the game come about?
RC: We were all in a class together at Parsons. It was a Unity development course being taught by Robert Yang (Radiator), who is himself a recent graduate from the program.
We had reached a point where we had to figure out what our final project was going to be. And I joked, You know whats missing from Unity? Text adventures. No ones making text adventures in Unity. Whats up with that? Anthony and I laughed, but then we took it further: how would it work? How would you control it? Obviously it would need to be in 3D, because Unity is a 3D tool and we need to use the tool to its fullest.

Free Speech Icon Mary Beth Tinker Launches Crowdsourcing Campaign to Complete Nationwide Civics Education Bus Trip to …
Posted: at 11:40 pm
Washington, DC (PRWEB) February 12, 2014
Mary Beth Tinker, a plaintiff in the landmark 1969 students rights case Tinker v Des Moines, launched a crowdsource campaign (http://www.startsomegood.com/tinkertourwest) today to finish her national civics education tour, the Tinker Tour, with visits to at least 12 western states this spring.
This fall, Tinker and student rights attorney Mike Hiestand traveled 16,000 miles across the Eastern half of the country -- from Massachusetts to Michigan to Mississippi -- stopping at nearly 60 schools, colleges, libraries, courts, a student detention facility and several national conventions. Tinker shared her story with more than 20,000 students and teachers while also talking with them about free press, free speech and civics education. More information about the tour is available on the Tinker Tour Web site (http://www.tinkertourusa.org).
The Tinker Tour, which began on Constitution Day in Philadelphia, coincides with the 50th anniversary of a number of major civil rights anniversaries such as the Birmingham Childrens March and Mississippis Freedom Summer, events that Tinker says had a huge effect on her, and even on the Tinker ruling by the Supreme Court.
I was a child growing up during a time much like today, when there was great inequality as well as war. I was only thirteen years old, but I wanted to speak up. When I saw the Birmingham Children on TV in 1963, that helped inspire me.
Then, when three civil rights workers, Chaney, Schwarner and Goodman, were killed in Mississippi in the summer of 1964, Tinkers parents went to Mississippi to volunteer with Freedom Summer. Tinker said that their bravery, as well as the stories her parents brought back about the civil rights workers, like Fannie Lou Hamer, also motivated her.
Tinker learned recently that Freedom Summer influenced her case even more than she realized. In the Tinker ruling, the Supreme Court cited a 1967 Appeals Court ruling that high school students in Mississippi should not have been suspended for wearing buttons to school to protest the killings there in 1964.
This year is huge in civil rights history, said Tinker. And, its so important to pass along these stories that inspire young people, just like they were passed along to me.
In 1965, Tinker, along with her brother, John, and Chris Eckhardt, the other plaintiff, wore black armbands to school to mourn the dead in Vietnam. When they were suspended, the case was argued by the ACLU at the Supreme Court, which ruled that neither students or teachers leave their Constitutional rights at the schoolhouse gate.
Now, the ruling is cited by liberals and conservatives alike. In November, it was featured by the Liberty Institute at a Supreme Court Historical Society event.

American scholar angry after book on Hindus pulped in India
Posted: at 11:40 pm
DELHI: American scholar Wendy Doniger said she was angry and disappointed that all copies of her latest book on Hinduism will be pulped in India after a legal row that has ignited fears about free speech. Her publisher Penguin agreed on Monday to withdraw the 2009 book The Hindus: An Alternative History to settle a court battle with an activist group which took offense to the depiction of the religion. I was of course angry and disappointed to see this happen and I am deeply troubled by what it foretells for free speech in India in the present, and steadily worsening, political climate, she wrote in an e-mail statement sent to AFP on Tuesday. Doniger, 74, wrote in her statement that as a publishers daughter, I particularly wince at the knowledge that the existing books (unless they are bought out quickly by people intrigued by all the brouhaha) will be pulped. The Shiksha Bachao Andolan Committee, a group of Hindu academics, filed civil and criminal suits in a New Delhi court claiming the book contained factual errors and parts of it misrepresented Hindu mythology. Other writers and champions of free speech have widely criticized Penguins decision to cave into pressure and reach a settlement, rather than fight the case and seek to challenge any lower court ruling on appeal. The agreement by the publisher to withdraw it is like putting a contract out on free expression, wrote commentator Pratap Bhanu Mehta in an opinion piece in The Indian Express newspaper. Penguin India has not responded to repeated requests for comment, but Doninger sprang to the defense of the publisher, which is part of the publishing giant Penguin Random House. Penguin India took this book on knowing that it would stir anger in the Hindutva ranks, and they defended it in the courts for four years, both as a civil and as a criminal suit, she wrote. The mutual agreement between the publisher and the activist group does not impose any legal binding on any other Indian publisher that wishes to publish Donigers book in India, lawyers say. Many authors and artists practise self-censorship in religiously diverse India, which is about 80 percent Hindu, due to tough laws against inciting communal violence and a powerful censor.

States Competing for SpaceX by Offering Financial Breaks
Posted: at 6:44 pm
Space Exploration Technologies Corp. Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk founded the company in 2002 to build and launch rockets to serve the International Space Station and shuttle tourists into space.
In a glass-walled conference room at the California headquarters of Space Exploration Technologies Corp., Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk told Texas officials he was interested in building the worlds first commercial rocket launchpad in their state -- if the state could compete.
In the months after the 2011 meeting, state and local officials gave Musk, a billionaire, what he and his lobbyists sought: about $20 million of financial incentives, laws changed to close a public beach during launches and legal protection from noise complaints. SpaceX, as the company is known, hasnt said whether the Texas site, near Brownsville, the poorest metropolitan area in the nation, will be selected over locations in Florida, Georgia and Puerto Rico.
State and local governments often fall into bidding wars for jobs, offering tax breaks and sweeteners amounting to $70 billion annually, according to Kenneth Thomas, a political science professor at the University of Missouri in St. Louis.
Youve got to make sure youre providing what everybody else is providing for tax incentives and tax breaks, said John Baldacci, who was governor of Maine from 2003 to 2011 and regularly received requests for tax breaks.

Three years of discussions among Texas officials and SpaceX representatives culminated with the incentive offers, according to interviews. SpaceX hired lobbyists and flew a key lawmaker to its offices. Musk gave about $12,000 in campaign contributions.
