GOP to cities: Uphold 2nd Amendment or else

Posted: at 7:41 pm

PHOENIX State lawmakers sent a warning Monday to local officials: Do anything to help the federal government enforce its guns laws in violation of the Second Amendment and find yourself out on the street.

The legislation approved on a 6-3 vote by the Senate Judiciary Committee declares that all federal acts, laws, orders, rules and regulations that violate the true meaning and intent of the Second Amendment are invalid and void in this state. SB1294 also forbids the use of state personnel or resources to enforce those rules.

But the measure also says any agent or employee of the state or local government who knowingly violates the law is deemed to have resigned any commission the person possesses and is forever after ineligible to hold any office of trust, honor or emolument under the laws of this state.

Sen. Kelli Ward, R-Lake Havasu City, said that could even extend to members of a city council and local employees who do anything at all to help enforce federal laws. And the legislation says any local government that helps the feds loses all of its state aid.

Ward said that goes to the point of the law which voids any federal law that violates the true intent of the Second Amendment as given by the founders and ratifiers of the United States Constitution.

That raised a question from Sen. Steve Gallardo, D-Phoenix, as to exactly who gets to interpret the true intent of the Second Amendment.

I believe the Constitution is as written, she said.

It says in the Second Amendment that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, Ward continued. And the definition of infringed is to act as to limit or undermine or encroach on something.

Ward said there would be due process for any official accused of violating the Second Amendment, with judicial protections.

But she also told Capitol Media Services that did not mean absolute deference to state or federal courts as to what is constitutional. Ward said the meaning of the Second Amendment has to be as defined by the Constitution.

Kent State Wrestler Suspended for Anti-Gay Tweets, So Of Course Free Speech Is Once Again Under Assault

Posted: at 7:40 pm

Heres your daily reminder that freedom of speech doesnt mean freedom from consequences.

Kent State wrestler Sam Wheeler has been suspended indefinitely for making several anti-gay statements on Twitter. Like clockwork, this is bringing out the armchair constitutional lawyers who claim that this is an all-out assault on free speech. Duck Dynasty. #FreePhil.

I though we had free speech would they supend a gay person if they made anti christian or post about straght people, says one commenter on FOX Sports Ohios Facebook page.

What ever happened to freedom of speech! Isnt this American! Why are we being forced to accept things we may not agree with! Who cares what you do behind closed doors, keep your sex life to yourself! says another commenter.

Ok, lets take a look at what Sam Wheeler actually said. Referencing Missouris Michael Sam, who just announced that he is gay ahead of the NFL draft, Wheeler lamented that he cant even watch SportsCenter without hearing about that fag from mizzou. He later tweeted at two other users, calling them queers.

O geez I got all these fag boys mad at me now, he said.

All of the tweets (as well as his entire account) has since been deleted. But this is the internet, so here they are (courtesy outragedc.com):

Free speech!

Wheeler has been suspended indefinitely for his tweets.

Senator Blunt Co-Sponsors Bill To Prevent IRS Targeting, Protect Free Speech

Posted: at 7:40 pm

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE OFFICE OF U.S. SENATOR ROY BLUNT (MO.)

Senator Blunt Co-Sponsors Bill To Prevent IRS Targeting, Protect Free Speech

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.) co-sponsored the Stop Targeting of Political Beliefs by the IRS Act (S. 2011), which was introduced today by U.S. Senators Jeff Flake (Ariz.) and Pat Roberts (Kan.) and is co-sponsored by 36 additional senators.

The bill would protect the free-speech rights of 501(c)(4) organizations by prohibiting for one year the finalization of a proposed Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulation that would significantly limit the advocacy and educational activities of these groups. The bill would also prevent additional targeting of 501(c)(4) organizations by restoring the IRS 501(c)(4) standards and definitions that were in place before the start of the agencys targeting of conservative groups in 2010.

People in Missouri and across the country are rightly concerned about government overreach and political targeting that weve witnessed under this administration, Blunt said. Im fighting for more transparency and accountability in Washington, and I'm pleased to join Senators Flake and Roberts in this effort to protect Americans First Amendment rights.

Background:

On November 29, 2013, the Department of Treasury published a proposed IRS rule that would broadly define 501(c)(4) political activity to include voter registration, voter education, communications that mention a candidate or party, grants to 527s, and events in which a candidate participates, among other activities. Even non-partisan activities would be limited. The regulations specifically single out 501(c)(4) organizations, and do not apply to other nonprofit organizations such as charities, labor unions or trade associations.

The administration has already faced harsh criticism for earlier attempts by the IRS to target these same organizations. On May 14, 2013, the Treasurys inspector general for tax administration released a report finding that the IRS had inappropriately targeted and applied excessive scrutiny to the applications of conservative groups applying for 501(c)(4) tax-exempt status. Several IRS employees, including the acting commissioner, resigned as a result of the scandal. Investigations by the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the Department of Justice are ongoing.

Canada unveils new space policy

Posted: at 6:47 pm

Canadian Industry Minister James Moore has unveiled a new plan to develop the country's space industry in a bid to safeguard Canada's "sovereignty, security and prosperity".

Moore said Friday that Canada's Space Policy Framework will serve as a guideline for the country's strategic space activities and ensure the commercial competitiveness of its space industry in the future, Xinhua reported.

The plan framework noted that "space has become a new frontier not only for science but for commerce," as the global satellite industry revenues exceeded C$190 billion Canadian (US $172 billion) annually.

"Every G20 nation now has its own satellite system in space and the emerging economies have made substantial investments in their national space programmes," the plan framework said, adding that this would bring greater competition for the Canadian space industry as it courted new markets and customers.

"Canada's space industry asked for a change and we recognise the essential role that our space industry plays in keeping Canada's economy on the right track and in maintaining our position as a global leader in space," said Moore.

The official also confirmed support for the James Webb Telescope project, a result of international cooperation involving Canada that is set to be launched in 2018 and will be the most powerful space telescope in the world.

The new plan framework emphasised the role of the private sector and international collaboration to develop the space industry.

But Montreal Liberal Member of Parliament and former astronaut Marc Garneau said the plan framework "resembles" what he proposed a decade ago, criticising the federal Conservative government for cutting the space programme's budget by C$30 million Canadian dollars (US $27 million) last year.

Garneau, however, admitted that it is "a good framework" but the real question lies in implementation.

Canada is known for the Canadarms, robot arms attached to the international space station, and famous astronauts including the first ever Canadian commander of the station, Chris Hadfield.
