Eczema is a chronic skin condition that can be caused by a number of different factors both internal and external. Eczema tends to affect children below the age of six primarily, but many people may suffer from recurring bouts of eczema throughout their lives. Eczema is an inflammatory condition but is not contagious and cannot be caught or transferred from one person to another. If left untreated, eczema can develop into more serious skin diseases such as herpes and impetigo.
There are different types of eczema that vary in terms of causes and symptoms. The most common type of eczema is also referred to as atopic dermatitis. In fact, these two terms are often used interchangeably. Atopic dermatitis is caused by external factors and causes scratchy inflamed red patches of skin. These attacks flare up depending on allergens and other environmental factors. Contact dermatitis or eczema is caused when the skin comes in contact with a particular allergen or irritant. Contact eczema is highly localized and if you have a history of allergies, you are more likely to contract this type of eczema.
Other types of eczema include seborrheic eczema (normally caused by dandruff). Nummular eczema results in coin-shaped patches of itchy and crusted skin. This is not a common type of eczema and is generally found in elderly men. Neurodermatitis is often caused by an insect bite that causes a skin inflammation. It can also be exacerbated by stress. Stasis dermatitis only affects the skin in the lower legs and is caused by circulation problems. Dyshidrotic eczema affects the soles of the feet and your palms. The symptoms of this type of eczema typically include the appearance of scaly, yellowish patches on the skin and the condition could in fact appear as a seasonal reaction to the weather or different allergens.
Visit your doctor if you have any of the following eczema symptoms:
In order to properly diagnose eczema, your doctor will conduct a thorough physical examination. Several questions about the history of the condition will be asked in order to determine the factors that may be causing the disease. The symptoms of eczema are similar to reactions to certain medications or as a result of other infections, so care has to be taken while diagnosing the problem. A skin biopsy may be required to rule out any other more serious skin conditions. In case you are suffering from contact eczema, a simple patch test can be conducted to determine the specific trigger that led to the inflammation. Apart from these diagnostic tools there are no specific blood tests to conclude the presence of eczema.
There are types of eczema that have no specific causes and may develop for no apparent reason. However, studies show that the possible causes of eczema could include:
The first step in treating eczema is to bring some relief to the itchy burning sensation caused by this skin condition. Itching leads to scratching, which in turn causes rough skin and infections.

Tests That Diagnose Psoriatic Arthritis
Posted: at 4:42 am
By Bethany Afshar WebMD Feature
If you are one of the 7 million people in the United States who have the skin condition psoriasis, you should know the signs and symptoms of psoriatic arthritis. As many as 40 percent of people with psoriasis also have psoriatic arthritis.
The causes of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are not completely understood. Genetics, the environment, and your immune system are all thought to play roles. Some scientist believe that your immune system attacks your skin when you have psoriasis. When you have psoriatic arthritis, it attacks the joints, causing inflammation.
It can be hard to find out you have psoriatic arthritis. There are no significant tests that can be done to support diagnosis. Doctors must exclude other types of arthritis, and patients must have a history of psoriasis or have active psoriasis to get the diagnosis, says Erin Boh, MD, chairman of dermatology at Tulane University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.
Your joint symptoms may be mild, so your doctor may suspect other typical causes of pain, says Eric Matteson, MD, rheumatology chair at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
The first symptoms may not seem related to your skin condition, Matteson says. But that stiffness in your back may be caused by spine inflammation. Its important to get a correct diagnosis so that you can be treated before your joints have permanent damage.
The condition can develop very slowly. In most cases, a person will develop or have psoriasis before he has signs of psoriatic arthritis.
In the less common cases where joint problems show up before the skin symptoms, it can be even more difficult to diagnose. When it does affect the joints of the arms and legs, it can cause swelling that looks like rheumatoid arthritis and be confused with this disease, Matteson says.
Your doctor will ask you questions about your medical and family histories, as well as examine you for swollen and tender joints. You may have an X-ray to see if you have joint damage, and blood tests can help rule out other diseases.
Skin specialists, known as dermatologists, are often the first to suspect psoriatic arthritis in people theyre treating for psoriasis.

Genome sequencing holds great potential for diagnosing diseases, finding treatments and ultimately cutting medical costs, experts say, but insurance companies are leery of covering the still-new procedure, preventing it so far from becoming a routine part of medical care.
Boston-based Partners HealthCare is one of just two systems in the country to offer full genome sequencing for clinical patients. The out-of-pocket cost of unlocking your full genetic code, though, is steep: $9,000.
Cost is a barrier, said Heidi Rehm, chief laboratory director at the Partners Center for Personalized Genetic Medicine in Cambridge.
The lab started offering full genome sequencing last August using blood samples to extract information from DNA but it has done the complex analysis for fewer than half a dozen patients since then. Insurance companies didnt cover the costs for any of those patients, Rehm said.
For patients suffering from a range of diseases, from cancer to hearing loss, sequencing can help identify the gene causing the problem and help doctors determine which treatments will be most effective. Genetic sequencing can also tell patients if theyre at risk of developing certain conditions later in life.
The challenge for scientists like Rehm is to prove that this kind of analysis is useful not just for sick patients but for healthy ones.
Can I say every patient should get their genome sequenced? We just dont have the collective evidence and the studies to prove that today, Rehm said. So the insurers are not going to cover everything today.
Insurance companies do pay for some genetic tests those that test specifically for a patients risk of developing breast cancer, for example but theyre still evaluating the benefit of full genome sequencing, which involves much more data and analysis.
We dont have a lot of information yet to make sweeping decisions, said Dr. Neil Minkoff, medical director for the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans. We tend to look at the individual patient or individual physicians request. Its still early in our experience with it.
The states three largest insurers, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Tufts Health Plan, did not respond to requests for comment.
