Liberty survives late comeback, defeats North Kansas City

Posted: January 11, 2014 at 9:47 am

Though Liberty led by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter, the Blue Jays found themselves clinging to a two-point lead Friday with 10.1 seconds on the clock after a pair of baskets by North Kansas City senior guard Aries Washington.

Despite missing two free throws on the next possession, the Liberty girls hung on for a 50-48 home victory against North Kansas City and improved to 5-2.

We didnt hit free throws, but we hustled and got the rebound to keep it in our possession the last minute of the game, Libertys Morgan Fleming said. Weve gotten a lot better at closing games, not turning it over and relying on our passes.

The Blue Jays, who shot just 13 for 24 from the line during the game, went six for 11 in the fourth quarter, while the Hornets went nine for 12 to fuel their comeback.

Liberty coach Noah Simpson said he doesnt think his team would have been able to close out the game even just a few weeks ago.

They are super-athletic and super-aggressive and we knew it would be tough, Simpson said. I thought our kids made mistakes, but bounced back from them, which is different from the beginning of the year because we would have put out head down and made another mistake. We made one and it wasnt a big deal. Our resilience is getting better.

Going into the game, Simpson wanted to shut down Washington and the Blue Jays were successful until the final minute, holding her to seven points. Instead, Kianna Lane and Selena Salas led the Hornets with 13 points apiece. Maggie Brooks added 10.

We know that (Washington) is their best player and, to me, one of the top players in the city so our focus was there, Simpson said. We said that if the other kids beat us, they beat us. They came close and hit some big shots, but I think our game plan worked well.

Fleming led all scorers with 20 points, including seven in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory. Chiarra Franklin was the only other Blue Jay to break double-figures finishing with 11.

High Court Case: Abortion Clinic Protest-Free Zone

Posted: at 9:43 am

Eleanor McCullen clutches a baby's hat knit in pink and blue as she patrols a yellow semicircle painted on the sidewalk outside a Planned Parenthood health clinic on a frigid December morning with snow in the forecast.

The painted line marks 35 feet from the clinic's entrance and that's where the 77-year-old McCullen and all other abortion protesters and supporters must stay under a Massachusetts law that is being challenged at the U.S. Supreme Court as an unconstitutional infringement on free speech. Arguments are set for Wednesday.

Outside the line, McCullen and others are free to approach anyone with any message they wish. They risk arrest if they get closer to the door.

With her pleasant demeanor and grandmotherly mien, McCullen has become the new face of a decades-old fight between abortion opponents asserting their right to try to change the minds of women seeking abortions and abortion providers claiming that patients should be able to enter their facilities without being impeded or harassed.

In 2000, the Supreme Court upheld a different buffer zone in Colorado in a decision that some free speech advocates, who also support abortion rights, heavily criticized. Noted First Amendment lawyer Floyd Abrams recently called the decision in Hill v. Colorado "what may well be the most indefensible First Amendment ruling so far this century."

The three dissenters in that case Justices Anthony Kennedy, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas remain on the court. They have been joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, who may be willing to provide the two additional votes in support of the protesters.

McCullen and other abortion opponents sued over the limits on their activities at Planned Parenthood health centers in Boston, Springfield and Worcester. At the latter two sites, the protesters say they have little chance of reaching patients arriving by car because they must stay 35 feet from the entrance to those buildings' parking lots.

Planned Parenthood provides health exams for women, cancer screenings, tests for sexually transmitted diseases, birth control and abortions at the clinic, although on this day Boston clinic employees said no abortions were performed.

McCullen doesn't know which services arriving patients are seeking, but she said that women arriving with someone else usually are about to have an abortion because they need a ride home.

Sometimes McCullen is able to start a conversation before a woman reaches the yellow line. Protesters can usually be close by when people emerge from taxicabs.

Free speech policy gets reworking

Posted: at 9:43 am

The Yosemite Community College District Board of Trustees on Wednesday introduced its newly-phrased policy on free speech, after drawing criticism in September that led to a lawsuit.

It was the first meeting run by Lynn Martin, of Sonora, former Columbia College counselor and instructor, who was recently elected board chairwoman.

Martin has served on the board since 2010, representing Area 1, including Tuolumne County, eastern Stanislaus County and parts of Calaveras counties. She was selected chairwoman at the its annual organizational meeting in December and succeeds chairman Abe Rojas, of Turlock.

The meeting saw the first reading of the districts revised Time, Place and Manner policy governing free speech on district property.

The district drew national attention after Army veteran Robert Van Tuinen, a student at its Modesto Junior College campus, was prevented from handing out copies of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, which is Constitution Day.

Van Tuinen sued the district, claiming infringements on his First Amendment rights protecting free speech. Talks over the lawsuit continued Wednesday in closed session.
