Sweden’s early adopter foreign minister on crafting digital diplomacy
Posted: at 7:43 am
As offline problems concerning freedom and censorship continue to become online ones, we need digital diplomacy to help connect the talkers and thinkers of the world with the doers, to facilitate change. It alone may not save the world, but it will help us find new ways to come together to save it.
This was Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt's message atTedxStockholm, held in conjunction with the two-dayStockholm Initiative for Digital Diplomacybringing together diplomats, academics and developers in a 24-hour hackathon with a difference.
"Some great changes in the world have been down to human talkers and thinkers -- but now we must join with the doers of the world," said Bildt, referring to the Diplohack, a multidisciplinary event designed to create models for how digital diplomacy can facilitate real world change.
"Diplomacy is essentially about communication -- human minds getting together to share information and change the way in which we think, act and do. Thus diplomacy is about changing behaviour, it's about informing and creating better opportunities that might not have been there before. Can we save the world? At least we can change things.
"Diplomacy is about communication between nations and we live, thank god, in a much more open world where the voice of individual people means much more. Governments are becoming more open than used to be the case, thus public diplomacy and digital is becoming more important. It's about getting to the pulse of what's happening."
Bildt has been at the forefront of technological change throughout his career. As Prime Minister, he sent thefirst email to then US President Bill Clintonon 5 February, 1994, congratulating him on the decision to end a US trade embargo on Vietnam. He couldn't help but add, as a sign off, "Sweden is -- as you know -- one of the leading countries in the world in the field of telecommunications, and it is only appropriate that we should be among the first to use the internet also for political contacts and communications around the globe". Bildt has not stopped since: he famously tweeted his Bahraini counterpart in 2011when he couldn't get hold of him (it was revolutionary at the time) and was last year named"best connected" Twitter leaderfor mutually following 44 other leaders (President Obama may have been the first leader to sign up to Twitter, and the most followed, but he's the least connected). Bildt told Wired.co.uk afterwards that in the real world that simply means, "Now I see what my colleagues are doing. I can see what kind of message they are trying to get across which is important for me to know, whereas before I'd know only when it happened."
Bildt might have 250,007 Twitter followers, but for him it's listening to the Twitterverse that is important -- reading the "pulse" of the citizens. The Minister arrived at the event, held near a snow-covered Humlegrden park, having come straight from meetings concerning the latest events in Ukraine, where laws were swiftly passed on 16 January to criminalise protests. The day's events clearly hung over Bildt as he took to the stage. Earlier he tweeted, "Dark designs against democracy clearly behind what we saw in Kiev today [16 January]. And ultimately against independence of Ukraine," and, "Outrageous the way laws severely restricting freedoms were pushed through Ukraine parliament today [16 January]. Clearly forces pushing Belarus scenario."
Consequently, in his talk he emphasised the need for good infrastructure and connectivity in ensuring the people have a voice. It's something the Ukrainian people showed us during the November protests following President Viktor Yanukovych's refusal to sign a free trade deal with the European Union in favour of maintaining stronger ties with Russia, and again on 16 January, on Twitter. Now, those kinds of protests could be criminalised with the new laws stating individuals can be fined or jailed for pitching a tent or setting up a stage, while online media outlets have to register with the authorities and those buying pre-paid mobile phone services must provide passport information. The state appears to be at war with public protest, particularly the anonymous kind.
"Today there was a dramatic development in Parliament in the Ukraine," said Bildt. "Suddenly the regime passed seven new laws, some draconian and including freedom of the net, in ten minutes without any debates. The fastest information is on the net, which started to explode over those issues -- you get the pulse of what's happened.
"Then there was the referendum in Egypt in the last two days on the constitution -- 98 percent voted yes mmm impressive. I'm surprised it wasn't 100 percent."

Woman wearing Google Glass found not guilty of distracted driving
Posted: at 7:41 am
SAN DIEGO A Temecula woman was found not guilty in traffic court Thursday of a charge of distracted driving for wearing Google Glass.
San Diego Traffic Commissioner John Blair found that wearing the computer-in-eyewear could be covered as distracted driving by the traffic code, but police must prove that the eyewear was on.
Cecilia Abadie, 44, is believed to be the first driver in the nation to have received such a ticket. Google Glass is not yet on the market. Abadie is among those who are testing the product nationwide, called Google Glass Explorers.
On her Facebook page, Abadie thanked the people who had followed her case and had supported her claim of innocence: "Yes, we can continue to be CYBORGS even when we drive! Happy for all my fellow Glass Explorers that were anxiously waiting for this decision."
She was stopped by a California Highway Patrol officer Oct. 29 while driving north on Interstate 15 in northern San Diego County.
The officer issued the ticket as a violation of California Vehicle Code 27602, which makes it a violation to drive a vehicle "if a television receiver, a video monitor, or a television or video screen" is visible. Bills are pending in the legislatures of Delaware, New Jersey and West Virginia to ban driving with Google Glass.
Abadie's attorney had argued that since the California code does not mention Google Glass, it could not be the basis of a ticket. Blair rejected that reasoning.
Abadie testified that the Google Glass was turned off.
Blair also dismissed a speeding ticket for lack of evidence. Abadie had been driving 80 mph in a 65-mph zone, according to the ticket.
On her Facebook page, Abadie says she has been a product manager for Full Swing Golf Inc. of San Diego since 2005. On her Twitter account, she describes herself as a "glass pioneer, geek, self-quantifier, transhumanist, blogger, speaker, currently playing with fun new ways to a better self."

Muscle cars get swanky with the Equus Bass770
Posted: at 7:41 am
With the sixth generation of the Mustang, Ford has made a purposeful move away from the retro lines of the previous generation and toward a decidedly more modern look. Fortunately for those that prefer the heyday styling of true 60s and 70s muscle cars, there's a new option. Michigan-based Equus Automotive combines classic muscle-car looks and power with luxuriously appointed interiors.
We've previously looked at the Equus Bass770, but the public premiere at this week's North American International Auto Show was the first chance we got to get up close. We're not all that sure there's much of a market for a US$250,000 luxe-muscle car, but if there is, it's sure to storm Equus' doors. The car has some serious presence.
While automakers like Ford and Dodge are focused on more of a "retro futurism," Equus has the courage to say without hesitation that the most imitable muscle car designs were the originals. So what if they're 50 years old, they still look good. We think car enthusiasts will agree as they look over the Bass770's flat face, round headlamps and fastback cabin, all of which look lifted straight out of muscle-car past without much modernization at all. Equus knows what it likes about muscle car styling and it's not afraid to emulate it.
In its quiet downstairs corner of the Detroit show, from a distance the Equus booth looked much more like a classic muscle car display than the home of a world-premiere sports car. It wasn't until you walked past the velvet ropes and popped the driver-side door that the car's true character came to life.
The interior is hand-wrapped in rich, colorful leather that is carefully matched to the exterior. Polished metal and modern instrumentation pop vividly against the leather backdrop. It's certainly a staircase beyond the transmission tunnel-divided bucket seats, floating dashboard and flagpole-sized shifter of a 60s-era Mustang.
Since the Bass770 hasn't changed much from its first appearance in September, we won't cover all the ins and outs, but we do feel obliged to repeat the meatiest specs. The 770 is powered by a 6.2-liter supercharged GM LS9 V8 that puts out 640 hp and 605 lb-ft of torque.
From a comfortable niche within the front of the aluminum chassis, that engine pushes the car to 60 mph (96.5 km/h) in 3.4 seconds before firing it up to a 200 mph (322 km/h) top speed, as the driver shifts manually between six speeds. Systems like magnetic selective ride control and performance traction management ensure all that brute power is put to work creating a tight ride.
Equus recently began production on the $250,000 Bass770 and told us deliveries will take about three to five months. It plans to work closely with each customer to create a bespoke machine hand-built to their specifications.
