DNA results do not prove innocence, judge rules in gruesome St. Louis murder case

Posted: at 10:44 pm

ST. LOUIS A single hair on a blanket helped convict Rodney Lincoln of a 1983 slaying that left two young girls motherless and with lifelong wounds.

While DNA testing now shows the hair was not his, it is not enough to exonerate him, a St. Louis judge has ruled.

Prosecutors have pointed out the hair could have been left by anyone, not necessarily the perpetrator, and Circuit Judge Robin Vannoy agreed.

With no knowledge of where the blanket came from, how long it had been in the residence, who had contact with the blanket outside of the date of the offense, there is no way to argue that the lack of a DNA match exonerates (Lincoln), Vannoy noted in her ruling, which was issued Tuesday and became available in full Thursday.

The judge also disputed that the hair described at trial as a match to Lincoln was the linchpin to his conviction, as attorneys fighting for his freedom argued.

Vannoy said she believed it was the testimony of one of the daughters, who had first identified Lincoln as the perpetrator from a photo array that compared his mugshot to a picture of a cousin.

While the photo spread may have been improper and suggestive, (the victim) had other occasions in which she identified (Lincoln) as the attacker, Vannoy wrote, mentioning a police lineup and courtroom identification.

The childs testimony never wavered and determining what was or was not the linchpin would require the court to read the minds of the jurors, and it cannot be decided after a review of the transcript 30 years later.

Lincoln has spent 30 years in prison for the gruesome slaying on April 27, 1982, of JoAnn Tate, 35, and the sexual assaults of her daughters, Melissa, 7, and Renee, 4. After one jury hung in 1983, another deliberated 11 hours before finding Lincoln guilty of manslaughter and assault the following year. The hair testimony was part of the second trial but not the first.

The Midwest Innocence Project took up Lincolns case in 2005, arguing for his release under a state law that allows for post-conviction DNA testing in certain instances. Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyces office opposed it.

New York artist creates 3D masks using strangers’ DNA

(CNN) We leave our DNA everywhere on the side of a wine glass or on a strand of hair left in a public restroom. An artist is proving that what you leave behind could be a lot more than you think.

You may want to think twice before you spit out your gum or drop a cigarette butt in public. New York Artist Healther Dewey-Hagborg might pick it up extract the DNA and turn it into a 3D face that could look like you!

A lot of my work begins with a question. In this particular place the question was what can I learn about someone from a single hair? Dewey-Hagborg said.

Once she finds a sample, she takes it to the lab to mine it for DNA, and then analyzes the results.

From a cigarette butt where someones ancestors likely came from, their gender, eye color, hair color, complexion, Dewey-Hagborg said.

That information is then fed into a computer program that generates a 3D model of a face.

The way that Im using code here is a lot like how a sketch artist would use a pencil, Dewey-Hagborg said.

It takes about eight hours to print in 3D at NYUs Advanced Media Studio.

Then, the excess powder is removed to reveal the disembodied face from a strangers DNA but there are limitations the length of a persons nose or the shape of his or her face cannot be determined.

Genomics.energy.gov–genome programs of the U.S. Department of …

The Genomic Science Program (formerly Genomes to Life) uses microbial and plant genomic data, high-throughput analytical technologies, and modeling and simulationto develop a predictive understanding of biological systems behavior relevant to solving energy and environmental challenges including bioenergy production, environmental remediation, and climate stabilization.

This is the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Human Genome Project (HGP) archive. Completed in 2003, the HGP was a 13-year project coordinated by the DOE and the National Institutes of Health to sequence the 3 billion basepairs that make up human DNA.

This is the archive site of the DOE's Microbial Genome Program (MGP). The MGP was begun in 1994 as a spinoff from the HGP. The program sequenced the genomes of a number of nonpathogenic microbes useful in solving DOE's mission challenges in environmental-waste cleanup, energy production, carbon cycling, and biotechnology.

Legacy of Neanderthal genome in some people ups risk of diabetes

Posted: at 10:44 pm

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Dec. 26 (UPI) -- A gene variant that may up the risk of diabetes in Latin Americans appears to have been inherited from Neanderthals, a study suggests.

Modern humans interbred with a population of Neanderthals shortly after leaving Africa 60,000-70,000 years ago, leaving a legacy of Neanderthal genes in the genomes of all non-African living today, they said.

A genomic study by U.S. and Mexican researchers of more than 8,000 Mexicans and other Latin Americans found the higher risk form of the gene exists in up to half of people with recent Native American ancestry including Latin Americans, a release from the Broad Institute, a biomedical and genomic research center in Massachusetts, said Thursday.

The gene variant is found less often in East Asians and is rare in populations from Europe and Africa, the researchers said.

People who carry the higher risk version of the gene are 25 percent more likely to have diabetes than those who do not, and people who inherited copies from both parents are 50 percent more likely to have diabetes, they said.

"To date, genetic studies have largely used samples from people of European or Asian ancestry, which makes it possible to miss culprit genes that are altered at different frequencies in other populations," Broad Institute researcher Jose Florez said.

"By expanding our search to include samples from Mexico and Latin America, we've found one of the strongest genetic risk factors discovered to date, which could illuminate new pathways to target with drugs and a deeper understanding of the disease."

Inheriting a gene from Neanderthal ancestors is actually not uncommon, the researchers said; about 1 to 2 percent of the sequences present in all modern day humans outside of Africa were inherited from Neanderthals.

Tech’s next feats? Maybe on-demand kidneys, robot sex, cheap solar, lab meat

JEFFREY BROWN:Now, mining technology to solve the world's problems.

NewsHour economics correspondent Paul Solman recently traveled to California and filed this report on some innovative thinkers. It's part of his ongoing reportingMaking Sense of financial news.

PAUL SOLMAN:On the back lot at 20th Century Fox, the world of make-believe, and a typical make-believe vision of the future, courtesy of FOX CEO Jim Gianopulos.

JIM GIANOPULOS,CEO, 20th Century Fox: Here's a little peek at what's in store for us.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR:At Weyland Industries, it has long been our goal to create artificial intelligence almost indistinguishable from mankind itself.

PAUL SOLMAN:The sci-fi pipe dream of moving pictures for as long as they have existed, but no dream to those assembled here.

This wasn't a film industry gathering, but a conference put together by Singularity University, a futuristic Silicon Valley think tank which fosters and showcases high-tech inventions. The goal is to make the world a better place as fast as possible.

Co-founder Peter Diamandis.

PETER DIAMANDIS,chairman, Singularity University: These tools that are now in your hands allow us to really take on any challenge. It's about the most efficient use of capital and tools that have ever existed.

PAUL SOLMAN:Singularity's mission is to solve humanity's most pressing problems by spurring new technologies in food, water, energy, supposedly scarce, but, with the tinkerings of technology, says Diamandis, potentially abundant.
