Labour government practised ‘state censorship’, says minister
Posted: December 23, 2013 at 5:43 am
Brandon Lewis, minister for local government, has said that the Labour government blocked all access to the Daily Star website, a ban that the Conservatives have lifted.
In November the Conservatives were themselves accused of web censorship when they took the unusual step of deleting the entire archive of documents from their national website.
The party wiped every article, speech and press release released before the last election from their website leading Labour to accuse them of trying to hide their broken promises and failed policy with a cynical stunt.
The documents contained pre-2010 election pledges on cutting inheritance, not imposing 'pointless reorganisations' of the NHS It also included the green promise that if you vote blue, go green which could be potentially embarrassing in the wake of recent pledges to slash green levies on energy bills.
The Conservatives argue that they are simply making it easier for people to quickly and easily access information on the site.

Can the government ban Facebook?
Posted: at 5:43 am
PERIODICALLY, the spectre of Internet censorship is raised under the benign guise of regulating the internet.
In 2009, leaked documents revealed the governments call for a tender involving the installation of Internet filters. The tender was later cancelled. A year later, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) engaged KPMG to research the Study on Positive and Safe Use of the Internet. It revived concerns that the government was once again looking to censor the Web. In 2011, MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek called for more effective control over online media content.
Social media, particularly Facebook, have not been spared the threat of censorship. In 2010, Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim said Facebook should be blocked as it posed a threat to national security. This year, Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin took the MCMC to task for failing to control social media. Recently, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad even said he regretted guaranteeing internet freedom when the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) was set up in 1996.
Which brings us to the MSC 10-point Bill of Guarantees (BoG), wherein the governments promise to ensure no censorship of the internet is stated. With all the recent threats of censorship, just how watertight is this promise?
(sxc.hu)
They have the tech
It is clear that the MCMC can instruct Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to prohibit access to certain websites or specific types of content, including specific YouTube videos. This capability has been documented online by the Sinar Project and was clearly observed during the recent general election.
If the government already has the technological ability to censor and disconnect Malaysian digizens from certain parts of the internet, what is there to stop them from blocking access to certain sites, like Facebook, entirely?
While Guarantee No. 7 in the BoG states that the government will ensure no censorship of the internet, the preamble of the BoG makes it clear that this guarantee is not legally enforceable. The simple reason is that it is not law in any form.
The BoGs reflects the governments intention to provide an environment in MSC Malaysia that is conducive to the development of MSC Malaysia Status entities. The incentives, rights and privileges granted pursuant to the BoGs are subject to requirements under relevant laws and regulations, the preamble states.

Anchorman 2: 5 Ways the Legend Continues
Posted: at 5:42 am
by Peter Paras Sat., Dec. 21, 2013 9:30 AM PST
San Diego's classiest newsman, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell), is back.
After some time away cultivating his moustsache (we presume), Ferrell returns as the narcissitic newsreader to continue the legend. The jokes can seem a bit familiar in tone, but Farrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, Steve Carelland David Koechner make a welcome return as the 1970s' newsies from San Diego embrace the glorious dawn of the 1980s in New York City.
So is this sequel "kind of a big deal"? Yep.
Here are the five ways Ron and his crew take a bite out of the Big Apple:
PHOTOS: More new movies in theatres right now
1. GNN: When the News Got Awesome:After losing his job, Ron gets an offer from the newly formed GNN, a cable network that has the audacity to air news 24/7. Ron just needs to get the band back togethereven if one of them is presumed dead. Once reunited, the guys go about rethinking, or dethinking, what makes news and infotainment is born. Ratings go through the roof.
2. Ron Is Still Ron: Whether he's putting his foot in his mouth at a family dinner or just being inappropriate at work, Ron shows that as the times change he can still find a way to be completely out of step with them.
3. The Voice of Reason: No, we don't mean Mr. Burgundy; we're talking Bill Curtis, the former CBS anchor and scary-voiced narrator of various A&E shows like Cold Case Files. Despite the fact that he's a real journalist and a two-time Peabody Award winner, Curtis returns to narrate the film...and the results may shock you! (He's good, that's all.)

Consequentialist libertarianism – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Posted: at 5:42 am
Consequentialist libertarianism (also known as libertarian consequentialism[1]) refers to the libertarian position that is supportive of a free market and strong private property rights only on the grounds that they bring about favorable consequences, such as prosperity or efficiency.[2] What consequentialist libertarians advocate is derived simply through cost-benefit calculation, taking a broad account of consequences.[3] It is contrasted with deontological libertarianism, also known as "natural-rights libertarianism," which considers the initiation of force and fraud to be immoral, regardless of consequences.[4][5] Unlike deontological libertarians, consequentialist libertarians do not necessarily see all cases of initiation of force as immoral and never see it as inherently immoral (i.e., they do not express a belief in natural rights). Rather, their position is that political and economic liberty lead to the best consequences in the form of happiness and prosperity, and for that reason alone it should be supported. (Some libertarians may have a conception of libertarianism that is a hybrid of consequentialism and deontology).[2]
Unlike deontological libertarians, consequentialist libertarians advocate actions they believe bring about favorable consequences regardless of whether these constitute initiation of force.[6][7] For example, unlike deontological libertarians, in addition to support for involuntary taxes, some consequentialists libertarians support eminent domain[8] Particular views vary among consequentialist libertarians, with political theorist David D. Friedman supporting a consequentialist form of anarcho-capitalism where the content of law is bought and sold rather there being an established legal code forbidding initiation of force.[9]
Milton Friedman,[10]David D. Friedman, Peter Leeson, Ludwig von Mises,[11] and Friedrich Hayek[12][13][14] are consequentalist libertarians.
