Giap, Wallace, and the Never-Ending Battle for Freedom

Posted: at 4:43 am

by Ramzy Baroud October 10, 2013

Nothing is more precious than freedom, is quoted as being attributed to Vo Nguyen Giap, a Vietnamese General that led his country through two liberation wars. The first was against French colonialists, the second against the Americans. And despite heavy and painful losses, Vietnam prevailed, defeating the first colonial quest at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu (1954) and the second at Ho Ch Minh Campaign (1975).

General Giap, the son of a peasant scholar, stood tall in both wars, only bowing down to the resolve of his people. Any forces that would impose their will on other nations will most certainly face defeat, he once said. His words will always be true.

He died on Friday, October 4, at the age of 102.

On the same day, the former black panther Herman Wallace, who had spent 41-years of his life in solitary confinement in Louisiana State Penitentiary, died from incurable liver cancer at the age of 71. Just a few days before his death, Judge Brian Jackson had overturned a charge that robbed Herman of much of his life. According to Jackson, Hermans 1974 conviction of killing a prison guard was unconstitutional.

Despite the lack of material evidence, discredited witnesses and a sham trial, Wallace, who was a poet and lover of literature, and two other prisoners known as the Angola Three, were locked up to spend a life of untold hardship for a crime they didnt commit.

Now that Wallace is dead, two remain. One, Robert King, 70, was freed in 2001, and the other, Albert Woodfox, 66, is still in solitary confinement and undergoes daily cavity searches, reported the UK Independent newspaper.

When his conviction was overturned it cleared the slate - he could die a man not convicted of a crime he was innocent of, King said of the release of Wallace, who died few days later.

One of the last photos released while on his hospital bed, showed Wallace raising his clinched right fist, perpetuating the legendary defiance of a whole generation of African Americans and civil rights leaders. While some fought for civil rights in the streets of American cities, Wallace fought for the rights of prisoners. The four decades of solitary confinement were meant to break him. Instead, it made it him stronger.

"If death is the realm of freedom, then through death I escape to freedom" Wallace quoted Frantz Fanon in the introduction to a poem he wrote from prison in 2012.

Freedom-Woodbridge’s Kyree Campbell is making a name for himself

Posted: at 4:43 am

Ohio State called Tuesday. Alabama dropped by after he jumped out on tape. Theres no doubt that a Cardinal District defensive end is turning heads.

And no, were not talking about DaShawn Hand.

Gaithersburg's Solomon Vault, a Northwestern recruit, is steadily recovering from a nearly catastrophic knee injury suffered against Clarksburg.

Freedom-Woodbridge sophomore Kyree Campbell enters Fridays tilt against Woodbridge and Hand with nine sacks and three touchdowns two of the scores coming on defense.

Weve kinda got that going on our side of town [with Campbell], that same thing you have with DaShawn Hand, who we respect highly, Eagles Coach Gary Wortham said.

Campbell currently holds oral, non-binding offers from the Buckeyes, Old Dominion, Virginia and Vanderbilt.

Junior defensive end Taureen Carter who missed Freedoms last two games (both losses) due to injury teams up with Campbell to give the Eagles (3-2) a pronounced height advantage on the edge.

How the government shutdown has affected some Boston historical sites

Posted: at 4:43 am

Freedom Trail tour guide Emily Kovatch said tourists she has talked to are more disappointed with the behavior of the government than the fact some federal sites in Boston are closed. [Interactive map of shutdown Freedom Trail sites]

By Jackie Tempera

With some historical sites shuttered during the United States government shutdown, the Freedom Trails signature tour guides are wearing down the heels on their pilgrim shoes to meet demand.

Ticket sales are up on the popular Boston walking tour, said Mimi LaCamera, the president of the organization, as other sites, from the U.S.S. Constitution to parts of Faneuil Hall have been forced to close.

Weve been booking more tours because other sites are closed, she said of the 90-minute walking tours, organized by the non-profit Freedom Trail Foundation. But were open and weve had a steady attendance.

Tour guides lead the tours in full colonial garb. And though two of the tours 16 stops, Bunker Hill and the U.S.S. Constitution, are closed, walking groups do not typically enter those sights during the tours anyway, LaCamera said.

Tourists can pick up the Freedom Trail from Faneuil Hall or Boston Common. Ticket sales on Boston Common, the more popular place to start the tour, have not changed, but the Faneuil Hall location has seen an increase, said LaCamera. She said this is likely because the National Historical Park tour, which ordinarily leaves from the same locale, is closed.

Weve been getting some of those people too, she said.

Emily Kovatch, a tour guide on the Freedom Trail, said her biggest problem has been informing the public that the tours are still going, and the stops along it remain the same. She spent the first 10 minutes of her Tuesday 10:30 a.m. tour explaining this to her four-person group.

O.C. Register to buy Riverside Press-Enterprise

Posted: at 4:43 am

The owner of the Orange County Register has increased his holdings in Southern California by agreeing to buy the Press-Enterprise, which circulates in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Freedom Communications Holdings Inc. said it will pay $27.25 million to acquire the newspaper from A.H. Belo Corp., a Dallas company that has owned it for 16 years.

The acquisition is the latest in a series of moves by Freedom owner Aaron Kushner. Since buying Freedom last year, he bucked a nationwide trend of newspaper downsizing by doubling the Register's staff of reporters and editors, adding regional editions and launching a new five-day daily, the Long Beach Register.

By acquiring the Press-Enterprise, which has a circulation of 87,775 daily and 112,000 on Sundays, Freedom has a presence in four Southern California counties.

"It appears like a good advertising opportunity if you can deliver readers from Long Beach to Riverside," said Jeff Brody, a Cal State Fullerton communications professor and former Register reporter. "The question of course for the editorial side is one of community: Is there a joint community you can make out of Long Beach, Orange County and Riverside? In the past I've always looked at the two counties as made up of different demographics."

Newspaper ownership in Southern California has been changing in recent years. Tribune Co. emerged from bankruptcy in December, leaving The Times and its seven other daily newspapers in the hands of its former creditors, including Oaktree Capital Management in Los Angeles.

In 2011, real estate developer Doug Manchester bought the Union Tribune in San Diego, and later acquired the North County Times and Daily Californian in Temecula. Kushner has expressed interest in acquiring The Times from Tribune.

The Press-Enterprise deal comes at a difficult time for the newspaper, which has reduced staff and coverage amid an industry-wide downturn in advertising. The paper's revenue fell 17% during the first six months of this year, A.H. Belo said in a regulatory filing.

Mel Opotowsky, who retired as the Press-Enterprise's managing editor in 1999 and lives in Riverside, was among those who welcomed the sale.

"At least it portends that the trend will change, the cutbacks will slow down or stop, and the coverage will increase," he said. "And one can hope that it will stick."
