Ron Paul’s legacy looms over son’s White House ambitions

Posted: at 7:40 pm

Former Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) laid important groundwork for his sons 2016 presidential aspirations in 2008 and 2012 building a network of online donors, a devoted band of libertarian activists and a well-recognized political brand.

But as Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) begins planning his own potential White House campaign, GOP strategists warn hell need to avoid following too closely in his dads footsteps if he hopes to find more success.

Rand Pauls 2010 Senate race benefited from the involvement of his father, who campaigned for him in Kentucky and allowed his son to tap into his vast donor network.

A former Ron Paul aide, who continues to work with the family, said its likely Ron would do whatever is needed to help Rand in 2016 but that he wouldnt want to eclipse his son.

Knowing Ron ... hes going to want Rand to be judged by who he is and to stand for himself, the aide said.

While Ron Paul has ceded the spotlight to his son since retiring from the House in January, he continues to engage on policy. Last week, while promoting a new book he authored on education reform, Ron told Jay Leno he hadnt discussed the potential of a White House campaign with Rand.

But he offered this father-to-son advice: I would say be very cautious; you could get elected.

Ron Paul failed twice on that score, in part because his libertarian views on social issues were either too wonky or too liberal to win the GOP nomination in 2008 and 2012.

The Texas congressmans monetary policy views which centered on abolishing the Federal Reserve were also too far outside the partys mainstream.

A.J. Spiker, the chairman of the Iowa Republican Party who formerly served as Ron Pauls Iowa vice chairman, told The Hill that there is a concern that some of the elder Pauls positions could drag Rand down.

Now You Can Own Ron Paul's Lime Green 1979 Chevrolet Chevette

Posted: at 7:40 pm

In a development that seems timely in light of the federal government shutdown, you can now own a car that belonged to a politician who was never a fan of the federal government: the 1979 Chevrolet Chevette owned by former Texas Congressman and ex-presidential candidate Ron Paul.

Paul, the physician and famously libertarian firebrand who represented Southeast Texas in Congress off and on for decades and launched failed presidential bids in 2008 and 2012, is being sold off in order to "aid the cause of peace and prosperity."

The Ron Paul Institute For Peace and Prosperity (blame them for these terrible low-res photos), Paul's pro-free market, pro-civil liberties nonprofit project, is giving the '79 Chevette to the person who pledges the highest tax-deductible donation by Oct. 15. The winner gets Paul's lime green hatchback with just 69,000 miles on it.

Paul says he bought the car during his first term in Congress during gasoline rationing because he needed a cheap, fuel-efficient car to get around in, and also so he could piss off Democratic House Speaker Tip O'Neill:

In 1979, when I was headed to DC for my first full term in Congress, I bought a car to keep there. It was a 1979 Chevrolet Chevette. But this compact 4-door soon proved to be controversial. Tip ONeill, the powerful House speaker, was advocating gasoline rationing for the rest of us, while he was chauffeured around in a Lincoln, all at taxpayer expense. And no waiting in gasoline lines for him, nor paying for it: he had his own pump in the House garage.

So my little carwhich I paid for myself, of coursewas parked next to the Tip behemoth for a cheeky photo. Well, you would have thought I was Ed Snowden. There was a huge blow-up. Tip even levied the ultimate punishment: he blocked pork-barrel funds for me, which I was not seeking anyway.

Kind of hilarious. The winning donor gets to take part in an official turnover ceremony in Clute, Texas, where they get a photograph and a Congressional license plate.

It's not exactly an American classic, but it has some history attached to it. The only kicker is you have to give money to Ron Paul to own it, which is either awesome or terrible depending on your political views. Any takers?

Hat tip to Steven!

Ron Paul Isn't Thrilled By 'Rather Annoying' Shutdown Debate

Posted: at 7:40 pm

Former Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, pauses as he greets voters on March, 3, 2012, in Puyallup, Wash.

Libertarian fans of former Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, may expect the former presidential candidate to be pleased with the partial government shutdown that began Tuesday, forcing federal agencies to furlough workers as Republicans seek a one-year reprieve for citizens subject to the individual health insurance mandate beginning Jan. 1.

But Paul told U.S. News the shutdown isn't as significant as some say and he finds the ongoing squabble between party leaders "rather annoying."

"It's less of an event than everyone's claiming it to be," he said. "The closedown doesn't close down people who want stuff, it didn't close down [the National Security Agency] and all the other things the government may be doing to us. The government marches on."

Paul believes President Barack Obama's 2010 health care law, which forces Americans to buy private health insurance, is "an outrage" that the U.S. Supreme Court should have declared unconstitutional, but he doubts Republican leaders truly believe in individual choice, the purported cause of the current impasse.

[LAWSUIT: Obama Needs to Enforce All of Obamacare]

"Republicans are supposedly on the side of cutting and watching that we don't get too much government intrusion in medical care, but when they were in charge they increased the size and scope of government intervention in medical care," he said, "so I don't think they're sincere about it."

Political leaders, Paul predicted, "will fuss and fume all for political gain it's all political gamesmanship."

"How did the Democrats get away with this idea of, 'No, we're not going to conference' and then blame the Republicans for being extremists when they won't even go to conference? That gets pretty tiring to tell you the truth."

He's been watching news coverage on the TV, and he says he "can imagine why the average American citizen is pretty tired of it all."
