Internet freedom coalition seeks data
Posted: September 20, 2013 at 10:43 pm
An internet freedom coalition backed by US technology giants has asked for 21 countries to release information on national security and law enforcement data requests.
The Global Network Initiative, which includes Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Microsoft, has asked the countries to 'report on the requests they make for electronic communications surveillance and to make it legally possible for companies to report regularly to the public on the government requests that they receive from law enforcement as well as national security authorities'.
Letters have been sent to senior government officials responsible for foreign affairs, justice, and security, with copies to data protection authorities, the group says.
Copies were sent to representatives at the UN offices in Geneva, in advance of discussions on human rights and communications surveillance at the 24th session of the Human Rights Council, the organisation said.
The move comes with US tech firms in a battle with the US government to release more information on the role of companies in surveillance programs revealed in recent months by intelligence leaker Edward Snowden.
The tech firms say they are not allowed to reveal the number of national security requests, and that more transparency would boost the confidence of their users.
The Global Network Initiative, which seeks to promote freedom of expression and privacy in the digital age, sent the requests to the 21 countries in the Freedom Online Coalition, which have committed to collaborating to advance internet freedom.
The countries are Austria, Canada, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Estonia, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, Ireland, Kenya, Latvia, the Republic of Maldives, Mexico, Mongolia, The Netherlands, Sweden, Tunisia, Britain and the US.

Paul: Liberty movement is winning and could help GOP win too
Posted: at 10:43 pm
Sen. Rand Paul told members of the liberty movement that theyve been winning the big policy battles on Capitol Hill and that their message could grow even stronger in the coming years if formerSecretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton becomes the next Democratic nominee for president.
Pondering a White House run of his own, Mr. Paul made the short trek to Chantilly, in Washingtons Virginia suburbs, to speak at the Liberty Political Action Conference. The conference gave him a chance to talk directly to many of the peoplewho supported his father, Rep. Ron Paul, in the 2008 and 2012 Republican presidential primary races and whom he will likely need to win a Republican presidential nomination in 2016.

The Kentucky Republican also used is as an opportunity to chop down his potential Democratic rival, saying that Mrs. Clintons support of a military strike against Syria and of big government policies could make iteasier for the liberty movement to make inroads with young voters and attract them to the GOP.
Who has been the most aggressive for being involved in Syria? Hillary Clinton, Mr. Paul said. Who is probably the least likely to protect privacy among Democrats? Hillary Clinton You could see the wholeentire youth movement switching if we know what we are doing.
The three-day conference at a hotel conference center in Northern Virginia features some of the liberty movements leading stars.
The list of speakers includes Republican Reps. Justin Amash of Michigan, Mark Sanford of South Carolina, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Steve Stockman of Texas and Paul Broun of Georgia. The conference also features panels focusing on everything from protecting the Second Amendment to reducing the debt and defending individual liberties from the surveillance state.
But the events biggest attractions are clearly the Pauls.
The elder Mr. Paul is scheduled to speak here Friday and there is a panel on Saturday dedicated to the subject: How the Ron Paul Revolution Continues to Reshape the Landscape of American Politics.
Serving as one of the conferences opening attractions, the younger Mr. Paul joked that he feels the same way that Hollywood acting star Charlie Sheen must have felt about a couple of years ago when he was going crazy andracing around saying winning, winning, winning.

Liberty Interactive Remains Neutral
Posted: at 10:43 pm
We reaffirm our long-term Neutral recommendation on Liberty Interactive Corp. (LINTA). The company reported mixed financial results for the second quarter of 2013. Liberty Interactive currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
Why Kept at Neutral?
We believe that the TV home shopping business will continue to flourish in the near future. The QVC segment of the company has successfully transformed itself into a powerful global brand, which may boost Liberty Interactives revenues in the double-digits. Management stated that its online sales will constitute more than 50% of the total revenue in the U.S. by 2014. Growing adoption of high-end smartphones in the U.S. is the main reason for revenue growth.
Moreover, Liberty Interactive currently holds about 22% of the equity and 57% of the total votes of all classes of common stock of TripAdvisor Inc. (TRIP). TripAdvisor is the worlds largest travel site, which allows users to post reviews of airlines, hotels, and vacation resorts throughout the world.
On Aug 2013, Liberty Interactive launched a new broadcast channel called QVC PLUS. This second channel currently airs all the live broadcasts (TV shows) of the existing QVC channel at a delay of three hours. Management has decided to introduce some special programming in the QVC PLUS channel in order to broaden QVCs offerings.
QVC PLUS is currently available to DIRECTV (DTV) customers. Moreover, QVC has entered into carriage deals with Time Warner Cable Inc. (TWC) and Bright House Networks.
Meanwhile, the stock price of Liberty Interactive has soared 35% in the last year and is trading at the high-end of its 52-week price range. We believe that the stock is currently fairly valued.

LIBERTY CENTER, Ohio In the grand finale of its Sesquicentennial Summer, the village of Liberty Center will commemorate its 1863 beginnings with a fall festival Saturday.
With tributes already paid to the past during Founders Day and the Wheels of Time and to the future with Kids Day, the celebration this weekend turns to the present with 12 hours of activities, opening with breakfast at 7 a.m. at the Liberty/Washington fire station and closing with two performances of The Spirit of Liberty production.
Events in the downtown area include the public librarys book sale in the annex; the Garden Club flower show at Charlie s Liberty Caf; the work of local artists at Tyler Sharpes studio; a restored classic car and truck show in the Methodist Church parking lot; inflatables and a mini-train for kids, and vendors and craftsmens displays.
Visitors can take horse-drawn wagon rides, and the historic Wabash Depot will be open to visitors through the day.
On the hour, beginning at 11 a.m., the stage set up near the Gerald Grain Center will welcome the Henry County Chorale, the Delta Community Band, and single acts by Garry Cline and Shane Piasecki and Guest. A chicken barbecue, bingo, and a dunk tank are on tap as well.
The Bell Choir from St. Patricks church near Grand Rapids will be featured in a guest appearance with the multi-community cast of The Spirit of Liberty production, which focuses this year on the 150-year-history of the community with all-time American musical hits.
