$100 Million Freedom Fund to Combat Modern-Day Slavery

Posted: at 3:43 am

NEW YORK, Sept. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Three leading anti-slavery activists and donors, Humanity United, the Legatum Foundation and Walk Free Foundation, today announced plans to launch the Freedom Fund, an ambitious seven-year effort to raise and deploy $100 million or more to combat modern-day slavery. The announcement was made at the annual Clinton Global Initiative in New York City.

The Freedom Fund is based on the investment approach of its founders and aims to leverage donor funds to significantly increase the impact of existing and new anti-slavery initiatives and enable the scaling up of successful programs globally.

The Fund will target specific areas of high prevalence using a 'Hotspot' funding model. It will also fund innovation through thematic program interventions which deliver impact across multiple regions. By coordinating the efforts and resources of actors throughout the sector, the Fund aims to measurably reduce modern-day slavery by 2020.

"Efforts to combat modern-day slavery have traditionally been driven by individual actors and organizations with limited funding, relative to the scale of this significant problem," said Randy Newcomb, president and CEO of Humanity United, a human rights foundation. "Our goal with the Freedom Fund is to unite those working in isolation in order to create scalable, lasting change for the estimated 21 million people living under the oppression of modern slavery."

The Freedom Fund will support a variety of actors in the non-profit sector, including international NGOs. There will be an emphasis on providing resources to grassroots organizations working on the front lines to free and rehabilitate survivors of trafficking. The official launch of funding is anticipated in 2014.

"People are surprised to learn that slavery still exists today. The Freedom Fund is a new abolitionist initiative that will work to finally eradicate this modern-day scourge. It will serve existing efforts, identify best practices and mobilize new resources," said Alan McCormick, a managing director from Legatum. "The structure of this fund has the potential to break the cycle of slavery for millions of men, women and children globally."

Humanity United, the Legatum Foundation and Walk Free Foundation have each committed $10 million to seed the Fund and will seek to extend the partnership to others who share the same passion and commitment to the cause. The partners' initial funding will be used to establish the organization and quickly begin directing resources to areas of need.

"What has been missing in the fight against modern slavery is a collaboration of effective resources and targeted efforts focused on outcomes," said Andrew Forrest, founder of Walk Free Foundation. "We invite those who share our vision to unite and become part of that solution."

Prior to the official launch in early 2014, the Freedom Fund founding partners will hire a CEO and develop a set of guiding principles, as well as funding and governance structures.

'Freedom fighter' a delusional old man: barrister

Posted: at 3:43 am

Topics: brisbane district court

WANNABE freedom fighter Gerard Michael Little's own barrister described him as a delusional old man who harboured unrealistic fantasies of fighting in a war zone.

Little pleaded guilty yesterday in the Brisbane District Court to one count of preparing an incursion into a foreign state, a charge which carries a 10-year maximum jail sentence.

Little, who was educated at St Joseph's College in Toowoomba, was arrested at Brisbane International Airport in December, 2012, while attempting to board a plane to Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea.

He planned to island-hop his way to take up arms in the West Papua war zone. Australian Federal Police subsequently raided his daughter's and father's properties in Toowoomba.

The District Court heard Little had travelled to Crimea in the Ukraine in August, 2012, to undertake a five-day program at the International Law Enforcement Training Agency.

Little's barrister Craig Eberhardt told the court his client was in no way a freedom fighter.

He had rubbished the effectiveness of the five-day course.

"He is a broken-down, old man who was delusional," he said.

The court heard Little boasted on Facebook he was a colonel in the West Papuan freedom fighting movement.

Sports are outlet for Liberty's Gibson

Running back has passion for football

Times Herald-Record

Published: 2:00 AM - 09/27/13

LIBERTY As a young boy, Shakree Gibson was painfully shy, keeping to himself in what his foster mom, Brenda Miller, called his own little world.

Truth be told, young Shakree was more than shy. He was scared and insecure.

However, for Gibson, confidence would partially come in the form of sports. His therapy was provided on soccer fields, baseball diamonds, basketball fields and, most of all, on the football field.

This is why Gibson plays running back. He starts for Liberty, by way of Fallsburg, where he played the last three seasons. Gibson transferred to Liberty in June after completing his junior year at Fallsburg, which folded its football team after last season.

"When Fallsburg lost football, in my head, I was going crazy," Gibson said. "Football was the only way I could get everything out of my head. All the pain, the misery, the depression was stuck in my head. Football is the only way I could get it out of my head."

Gibson could end up being a 1,000-yard rusher for Liberty, a perennial Class C playoff contender, this fall. He put up 1,039 yards and seven touchdowns for Fallsburg last season. Gibson has 281 yards in three games this year.

Liberty Tax Service Reports Fiscal Year 2013 Results Including Restatement of Fiscal Years 2011 and 2012

Posted: at 3:42 am

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA--(Marketwired - Sep 26, 2013) - JTH Holding, Inc. (NASDAQ: TAX) (the "Company"), the parent company of Liberty Tax Service, today reported that it has completed its restatement of fiscal years 2012 and 2011 and is reporting its results for the fiscal year ended April 30, 2013.All amounts included in this press release reflect the impact of the restatement. The Company continues to expect to file its Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended April 30, 2013 and its Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 31, 2013 with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) by October 14, 2013, the date its plan for listing compliance is due to the NASDAQ.

"We have been working diligently and are pleased to have the restatement of our annual financial statements completed and we are reporting our fiscal 2013 results. The restatement affected the timing of when we recognized a portion of our revenues, but our underlying business and goals have not changed," said Mark Baumgartner, CFO."Now that the accounting for the restatement is behind us, we have turned our attention to completing our SEC filings, including amending our previously filed fiscal 2013 10-Qs."

RestatementAs previously announced, the Company changed certain of its accounting policies in regards to the timing of revenue recognition for area developer and franchise fees. The policy changes approved by the Audit Committee of the Company's Board of Directors that are reflected in the restatement included:

As a result of the restatement, the Company estimates that non-recurring, pre-tax costs incurred during fiscal year 2014 attributable to the restatement will be in the range of $700,000 - $850,000.Additionally, since late August, the Company has been unable to renew its franchise disclosure documents with updated financial statements and is therefore unable to sell franchises until its annual financial statements are completed and franchise disclosure documents are up-to-date, which is expected to occur in October.

At the end of fiscal year 2013, due to changes in the Company's revenue recognition policies, the Company had a balance of $39.7 million in the unrecognized revenue portion of notes receivable and $16.9 million of deferred revenue, totaling $56.6 million in unrecognized revenue.Of the $56.6 million, $38.0 million was related to area developer fees and will be recognized over a weighted-average period of 4 years, subject to the receipt of payments on the notes receivable. The remaining $18.6 million is related to franchise fees and gains on the sale of company-owned offices, and the note balances associated with that revenue will be recognized over a weighted-average period of 2 years, subject to the receipt of payments on the notes receivable.

Fiscal Year 2013 Highlights

"Even with all the challenges this year presented, we are pleased that we were able to grow our market share and increase the number of customers we served during fiscal 2013 by 4%," said John Hewitt, Chairman and CEO."At our annual franchise convention in early June, we received great feedback from our franchisees on things we did well and things we need to improve on.The morale of the franchisee base is high as we prepare for another year of working closely with them to grow the business."

RevenuesRevenues for fiscal year 2013 increased 12.5% to $147.6 million compared to $131.2 million in the prior year period. The increase in revenue was driven primarily by increases in royalties and advertising fees, tax preparation fees and financial product revenue. The increase in royalties and advertising fees was the result of a 6.2% increase in systemwide revenue versus the prior year period.Tax preparation fees increased due to the higher number of company-owned offices because of the operation of Walmart kiosks and an increase in the number of returns processed through the Company's online product, eSmart. The increase in financial product revenue was a result of processing more products in-house through the Company's subsidiary, JTH Financial.

Operating ExpensesOperating expenses for fiscal year 2013 increased 13.1% to $116.8 million compared to $103.2 million in the prior year period. The increase was primarily due to an increase in employee compensation and benefits for personnel to support anticipated growth, operating additional company-owned offices and stock compensation expense.

During the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2013, the cash settlement of certain stock option transactions caused the accounting treatment of some of the outstanding stock options to change from being classified as equity instruments to liability instruments. This caused a one-time increase in stock compensation expense of $2.6 million, pre-tax, during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2013.On June 7, 2013, the Board of Directors approved a new policy regarding the settlement of stock options. As a result, these options returned to being classified as equity instruments in the first quarter of fiscal 2014, which generated a one-time decrease in stock compensation expense during the first quarter of approximately $872,000, pre-tax.
