Liberty Heights Fresh celebrates 20 years in Salt Lake City

Posted: at 12:43 pm

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Liberty Heights Fresh Tuesday, August 27, 2013, in Salt Lake City.

Steven Rosenberg can easily describe the cold pasteurization process that makes the Rosehill Dairy milk sold at Liberty Heights Fresh so sweet. And the stores self-titled Chief Eating Officer has seen the red angus cattle herd in Altamont, the sole fresh beef he sells, and knows the only grain they eat would be the seeds off a wild grass head.

But it is before the wall of extra virgin olive oil where the 53-year-old distills his food philosophy.

Liberty Heights Celebrates

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Liberty Heights Fresh is offering 20 percent off every item in the store, from Sept. 4-23. Daily deals will start Sept. 5. The store also will host an open house and festival with free tastings from local artisan food producers.

When Friday, Sept. 6, 4-8 p.m., and Saturday, Sept. 7, 3-8 p.m.

Where Liberty Heights Fresh, 1290 S. 1100 East, Salt Lake City; 801-467-2434.

The best olive oil is pressed as the fruit starts to turn from green to purple, he says. Thats also the time olives have the least oil to give.

This emphasis on quality over quantity and charging top dollar for it is the hallmark of the Salt Lake City specialty market that is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month.

Liberty High School students enjoy use of personal Macbooks

Posted: at 12:43 pm

Posted on: 12:24 pm, September 3, 2013, by John Pepitone, updated on: 12:25pm, September 3, 2013

LIBERTY, Mo. A digital transformation is underway for high school students at Liberty Public Schools. About 3,400 students in are getting laptop computers to use in class and at home throughout the school year.

The laptops are part of the districts effort to be on the cutting edge of education. At Liberty North High School seniors are checked out their new Macbook Air machines.

Educators said they want Liberty students to combine learning from a teacher in the classroom with doing assignments at home, or wherever they are, with a computer.

School leaders say they recognize that colleges are increasing their use of online courses. And they say students need discipline to succeed when working independently. Getting laptops in the classrooms at the high school level will help teens learn to digitally manage and organize whats expected of them.

Last year, the district tested both PCs and Macs. After three pilot classes, students expressed a strong preference for the Apple operating system and its design and features.

Twenty-four hour access for our students is really going to level the playing field and increase their accountability and the reachability of all the lessons they will have both online and face-to-face, said Tara Harvey, blended learning coach at Liberty North.

Liberty is leasing 3,400 Macbooks to provide the technology within its budget. Each student is asked to pay $40 to insure their computer. Those who dont pay for insurance must check out the machine every day from the school library.

The district also understands that not every household has internet access. One day a week there will be a bus leaving late from school, so students can stay and work with their laptops using Wi-Fi at the school.

Liberty Tax Service Offers Same-Sex Marriage Tax Return Amendments at No Cost

Posted: at 12:43 pm

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA--(Marketwired - Aug 30, 2013) - Liberty Tax Service, a subsidiary of JTH Holding, Inc. (NASDAQ: TAX), will amend 2010 and 2011 federal tax returns for same-sex, married couples for free. The Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Department of Treasury announced yesterday that they will treat same-sex couples, legally married in jurisdictions that recognize their marriages, as married for federal tax purposes. Effective September 16, the ruling stands even for those couples who do not reside in the jurisdiction where they were married.

Those in same-sex marriages could possibly benefit from amending their federal tax return for the past three years. Same-sex couples who were legally married in a prior tax year, regardless of where they were married, will qualify for federal amendments. Under the ruling, all federal tax provisions that pertain to marriage are affected, including a couple's filing status, employee benefits, claiming the earned income tax credit, certain deductions and the child tax credit. However, filing an amendment could cost a couple more, so visiting a Liberty Tax preparer is the best course of action.

"This ruling will change how many individuals file their federal tax return in the future. Liberty Tax is ready to assist these couples immediately with their federal tax return amendments and we're happy to do it for free," states Martha O'Gorman, Chief Marketing Officer at Liberty Tax Service.

Liberty Square’s facelift tells site’s full history

Posted: at 12:43 pm

Quick links to other pages on this site | Still can't find it? see Site Index File/staffLiberty Square was once Gadsdens Wharf. Buy this photo

When the National Park Service named its downtown Charleston property Liberty Square more than a decade ago, there was little talk of irony behind that name.

The urban park at the eastern tip of Calhoun Street was envisioned as a gateway to the Park Services new Fort Sumter Visitors Education Center, as well as the neighboring South Carolina Aquarium. Its original design contained mostly low-lying tablet markers with quotations from American presidents and other statesmen about liberty and freedom.

Today, the park contains something more additional historic information that shows this site wasnt always synonymous with those two words.

One of the new wayside markers discusses how this property once was Gadsdens Wharf, a bustling commercial node at Charlestons northern end and the primary entry point for African slaves imported into the city during the final quarter century of the nations legal slave trade.

The marker explains that approximately 260,000 African slaves were imported through Charleston before the legal trade ended in 1807 thats 40 percent of all African slaves brought into what is now the United States.

The liberty we talk about in the 21st century is not the liberty granted to everyone 200-300 years ago, said Michael Allen with the National Park Service. Having a conversation puts it in context. So much of our history ties back to colonial days.

Tim Stone, superintendent of the Fort Sumter National Monument, said the recent work was done to identify the property more closely as a National Park unit.

Other new markers explain more about the life of two historic figures already honored at the park the late blacksmith Philip Simmons, who designed its large wrought iron entrance gate, and the late Septima Clark, a civil rights pioneer who is honored here with a fountain. And new banners lead visitors from the street to the aquarium and the boats to Fort Sumter.

We hope it will become much more of an urban oasis where people can come and reflect, Stone said. Our hope is that people who come here say, This is a National Park.
