1st British Space Station Astronaut Launching in 2015

Posted: May 20, 2013 at 8:56 pm

LONDON The first British astronaut ever to visit the International Space Station will launch in 2015 for a six-month mission that may involve spacewalks, wrangling visiting robotic spacecraft and space experiments, the UK Space Agency announced today (May 20).

European Space Agency astronaut Timothy Peake, 41, will be the first British astronaut to fly in space in 20 years when he launches aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in November 2015. His mission was unveiled at London's Science Museum today.

Peake said he is "delighted and honored" to be selected for the mission. He will serve as a flight engineer during the space station's Expedition 46 and 47 crews. The mission will be the eighth long-duration mission for an ESA astronaut. [7 Notable Space Shuttle Astronauts]

"This is another important mission for Europe and in particular a wonderful opportunity for European science, industry and education to benefit from microgravity research," Peake said in a statement. He will also represent the UK Space Agency on the mission in addition to the ESA.

In training for the mission, Peake will learn how to use the European Columbus module, U.S. Destiny and Japanese Kibo laboratories on the International Space Station. His research work could include experiments in biomedicine, human physiology and the space environment. An experiment selection process is under way, officials said.

Big mission ahead

No final decisions have been made about exactly what science and other activities, such as spacewalks, he may perform on his mission. Peake's two fellow Soyuz crewmates and the rest of his six-person crew for the expeditions also have yet to be announced. [Life in Space: An Astronaut's Video Guide]

However, space station astronauts have had to perform emergency spacewalks for unscheduled repairs and maintenance, and Peake has had the necessary training for those tasks.

I am qualified on both the Russian Orlan spacesuit and American Extra vehicular and Mobility Unit, the EMU," Peak said in response to a question from SPACE.com. "I completed that training last year in Houston. My training will continue on the American spacesuit up until launch, so I will be eligible for a spacewalk.

Peake may also have to grapple with visiting spacecraft using the space station's Canadian-built robotic arm, Canadarm2.

Police child DNA swabs 'excessive'

Posted: at 8:56 pm

20 May 2013 Last updated at 11:49 ET

Police in England and Wales have taken DNA samples from children every 10 minutes, figures obtained using freedom of information requests suggest.

The Howard League for Penal Reform said officers taking 120,000 DNA swabs during 2010 and 2011 was "excessive".

Police said samples were taken from victims and witnesses and in paternity cases as well as from suspects.

But the Howard League argued that "overwhelmingly" the children were suspects, not victims.

The Howard League, which submitted freedom of information requests to every police service in England and Wales, said officers took DNA swabs from almost 54,000 children in 2011, including swabs from at least 368 10-year-olds and 1,030 11-year-olds.

It should be an extraordinary intervention for police to take the DNA from a child

On average, officers therefore took samples from 27 primary school-aged children each week. Overall, the samples were mainly taken from boys, who accounted for about 70% of the swabs.

Howard League chief executive Frances Crook said: "When public money is tight and police forces are shrinking, it is disappointing to see valuable crime-fighting resources being wasted on taking DNA samples from thousands of innocent children while serious offences go undetected.

"Children who get into trouble with the police are usually just up to mischief."

DNA, Fingerprints & Video Tie Ebel To Nathan Leon’s Murder

Posted: at 8:56 pm

DENVER (CBS4) CBS4 has learned that DNA lifted from a payphone mouthpiece and fingerprints on the phone are some of the key evidence that ties Evan Ebel to the murder of 27-year-old Nathan Leon, a father of three.

Denver police have long said they are confident that Ebel killed Leon March 17, but have never provided details of their investigation that connect Ebel to the murder. Now three law enforcement contacts familiar with the Leon killing have provided CBS4 Investigator Brian Maass with some of the clues linking Ebel to the shooting death of Leon.

The contacts say that Ebel initially called a Dominos Pizza restaurant near 40th and Colorado Boulevard to have a pizza delivered, but that he wanted the delivery to an intersection, not a specific address. Thats apparently against the pizza companys rules and they rejected Ebels initial delivery order.

Dominos has declined to discuss specifics of the Ebel case. Sources say there was then a second conversation between Ebel and the Dominos restaurant, and in that second conversation he provided a street address near 50th and Forest Street and Leon was dispatched to the address, which is located in a desolate industrial section of North Denver.

The law enforcement sources say that investigators later determined that Ebel called the pizza restaurant from a payphone located at or near a truck stop in North Denver. Investigators traced the payphone call that had been made to Dominos, determining it had originated from a specific payphone located at or near the truck stop in North Denver. The sources indicated the area had been under police surveillance due to criminal activity in the area, and they also obtained surveillance videotape showing Ebel on the phone, placing the pizza order.

Investigators were able to return to that specific phone and extract Ebels DNA and fingerprints from the phone. Since Ebel had been a Colorado prison inmate, they apparently already had samples of his DNA on file for comparison purposes, leading to the match.

Two of the law enforcement sources also say that police obtained videotape from numerous locations between Denver and Golden that shows Ebels vehicle traveling from Denver to Golden, which is where Leon was killed and his body was dumped. He had been shot twice. Law enforcement sources say Leon was alive during the drive from Denver to Golden and that Ebel murdered him after they arrived in Golden.

Police take DNA samples from children every ten minutes

Posted: at 8:56 pm

Under-10s are below the age of criminal responsibility, but police say the figures include those who are victims of crime or from whom the DNA is taken to rule them out as suspects.

The Home Office claim that the practice is crucial in the fight against crime.

However, Frances Crook, the chief executive of the Howard League, said that it showed children were being treated as hardened criminals.

She said: When public money is tight and police forces are shrinking, it is disappointing to see valuable crime-fighting resources being wasted on taking DNA samples from thousands of innocent children while serious offences go undetected.

Children who get into trouble with the police are usually just up to mischief. Treating so many like hardened criminals by taking their DNA seems excessive.

We welcome the Government's decision to stop storing innocent people's DNA indefinitely, but it remains unclear how this will affect the number of children having their DNA taken needlessly.

During 2011, 53,974 DNA samples were taken from children by forces in England and Wales, including 368 ten-year-olds and 1,030 11-year-olds.

The total is down on 2010, when nearly 70,000 samples from under 18s were taken by police.

This year new rules will come into effect which mean that any child convicted of a serious crime such as a sexual or violent attack, burglary or terrorism will have their DNA profile held indefinitely, as will under 18s who are convicted of two minor crimes.

However, child suspects arrested over serious crimes but either not charged or cleared at trial will have their profiles deleted after five years, and police will be unable to hold profiles of those accused of minor offending who are not convicted.
