Francis Crick sketched this diagram of the DNA double-helix molecule in a 1953 letter to his son, Michael. "The model looks much nicer than this," the elder Crick wrote.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

The descendants of Francis Crick, co-discoverer of DNA's double helix, are likely to receive a seven-figure sum from this week's sales of the late researcher's Nobel Prize and a handwritten letter describing the structure of the DNA molecule but the geneticists who are carrying on Crick's legacy will win a dividend as well.

"We'll probably be giving more money to the Francis Crick Institute than the prize was worth when he got it," mused Michael Crick, the Nobel-winner's eldest child and the recipient of that historic letter back in 1953.

The sales have been timed to take advantage of the 60th anniversary of the double-helix discovery, which was detailed by Crick and American biologist James Watson in a paper published by the journal Nature on April 25, 1953. Their findings opened the way to deciphering the molecular codes that control all of life's processes. The paper's publication date is now celebrated every year as "DNA Day."

Double helix, double sale Crick's legacy is the focus of two million-dollar sales scheduled in New York this week: On Wednesday, Michael Crick's lettergoes on the auction block at Christie's. His father sent it to the 12-year-old at his boarding school in March 1953 just after the researchers worked out the structure of DNA's long, double-helix molecule, but before the Nature paper's publication. "My dear Michael," the letter began, "Jim Watson and I have probably made a most important discovery."

The seven-page letter goes on to lay out the chemical structure of "des-oxy-ribose-nucleic-acid ... called D.N.A. for short." The elder Crick even sketched out the base pairs connecting the molecule's twisted spines.

"As far as we know, it's the first written description of how life comes from life," Michael Crick, now 72, told NBC News.

The letter has been valued at $1 million to $2 million. Michael Crick and his wife, Barbara, will receive half of the proceeds. The other half will go to the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California, where Francis Crick worked up to the time of his deathin 2004 at the age of 88.

Can Merck Field a Psoriasis Blockbuster?

Posted: at 4:43 pm

Targeting psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other immune diseases has created some massive markets over the last decade. How massive? The market was sized up at an estimated $72.2 billion in 2010, according to BCC Research -- and growth isn't slowing any time soon. That's good news for patients, too. The pharmaceutical industry's fascination with an improved understanding of biologics has led to dozens of drugs that treat the underlying causes of diseases, rather than small molecules of years past that only treated symptoms.

Few companies haven't joined the rush to develop biologics and novel small molecule classes to treat immune diseases. While some companies got a big head start over the field, next-generation therapies are being developed in pipelines across the industry. Merck (NYSE: MRK) is one company looking to capitalize on the trend and will shortly begin phase 3 trials on its leading psoriasis biologic therapy candidate. Going by the catchy pipeline name of MK-3222, the drug has huge potential if it ever receives approval from the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA.

About that competition I mentioned...Older therapies aren't exactly losing their grasp on the markets they took by storm just yet. A quick look at 2012 sales data from the first three biologics approved that work by inhibiting the TNF-alpha protein -- integral to immune system communication -- shows exactly that.

France Implicated in Wikipedia Censorship Threat

Posted: at 4:42 pm

Today in international tech news: After failed threats, France's intelligence agency draws thousands of eyes to the Wikipedia page it wanted removed. Also: A human rights group will equip activists with an electronic tracking bracelet that can trip a social media alarm; a European telecom gets big dough from Canada -- again -- to use BlackBerry; and China's Tencent defuses online angst and confirms its WeChat app will remain free.

Intelligence agents for the Direction Central du Renseignement Intrieur -- France's top intelligence agency -- were accused of censorship after threatening to arrest and charge a Wikipedia volunteer.

The hubbub originated with an article that contains classified military secrets, according to operatives, and ergo is a threat to national security. The article, which is still available, describes a military radio relay station in France that is believed to be part of the country's nuclear detection and deterrent network.

In March, the DCRI contacted Wikipedia's parent organization, the Wikimedia Foundation, about taking down the page. Wikimedia replied that DCRI hadn't provided evidence that the article was a risk, and therefore left it online.

Things got more interesting last week when the DCRI summoned a 30-year-old library curator, who is a Wikipedia volunteer and who has administrator's access to the site. The man reportedly had nothing to do with the page in question but claims he was told to take it down all the same. After declining, he was reportedly told that he would be held in custody and charged for failing to comply.

This sequence of events, rather predictably, resulted in unintended consequences: The vice president of Wikimedia France said that the page in question had between 10 and 60 visitors; as of Sunday, there were "around 10,000 from around the world."

The Wikimedia VP did add, though, that the page would indeed be taken down if DCRI produces the requisite legal papers.

Stockholm-based human rights group Civil Rights Defenders has issued a GPS bracelet that will send out an alert should a bracelet's owner ever be kidnapped.

The first five bracelets -- designed to tip off CRD, nearby activists and CRD's social media network -- were handed out last week at "Defenders' Days," a CRD conference. Fifty-five such bracelets will be distributed over the next 18 months.

Censorship among issues to be discussed in "Ask Minister" programme

Posted: at 4:42 pm

SINGAPORE: Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong said the country's policy on censorship is evolving and moving away from censorship towards one of classification and self-regulation.

Mr Wong was speaking at a recording of Channel NewsAsia's programme "Ask Minister" where he was posed a range of questions from censorship to arts education.

He also said the government should work with a consultative panel made up of Singaporeans from diverse backgrounds and get them to share their views before setting any boundaries.

Mr Wong said: "Rather than to say these are OB markers and don't touch them whether it's politics, race or religion and say 'thou shall not touch it', I think we should move away from that and we should move to a situation where we have a dialogue on what the artist would like to convey even if it's a provocative issue on politics, race or religion and then have a conversation - whether it's with MDA that looks at content regulation or more importantly with audiences so that audiences can understand what they are doing."

Catch more of the discussion with Mr Lawrence Wong on April 9 at 8pm on "Ask Minister", exclusively on Channel NewsAsia.

Sudanese journalists protest against censorship

Posted: at 4:42 pm

Dozens of Sudanese journalists protested for an end to censorship on Monday outside the offices of a respected newspaper whose editor was suspended by national security agents, a protester said.

"No to censorship," said a sign carried by the group of about 70 journalists who gathered outside the Al-Sahafa newspaper offices, the protester said.

Security forces did not intervene.

Al-Nour Ahmed Al-Nour, chief editor of the daily, said last week that agents of the powerful National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) told him he had been suspended -- a rare action against such a prominent journalist.

He said the decision appeared to be linked to a dispute over censorship, which journalists say the NISS continues to impose.

Reporters and press freedom advocates have complained that some Sudanese journalists were banned from writing and that NISS agents regularly block the distribution of papers.

Other newspapers have been suspended from publishing, but Nour is the first chief editor to be removed.

The incident prompted Sudan's government-run press council on Sunday to issue its strongest statement in years.

The council, which licenses newspapers and registers journalists, accused the NISS of interference and called on authorities to disband the press body if it cannot function.

Journalists on Monday also delivered a message to the press council, asking for an end to censorship and for Nour to be reinstated, the protester said.

Out of politics, Ron Paul launches his own curriculum

Posted: at 4:42 pm

Its not uncommon for former government officials or politicians to enter academia when they leave Washington.

Former Rep. Ron Paul has gone a few steps further by creating his very own curriculum.

The Texas Republican, libertarian hero and three-time presidential candidate aims to teach home-schooled students four core tenets: liberty vs. coercion, how to defend the freedom philosophy, what it takes for success in college, and how to start a home business.

The courses, available at ronpaulcurriculum.com, are free through fifth grade. They will rely on primary source texts rather than the traditional textbooks used in American public schools.

Textbooks are screened by committees. They dumb down the material, said Gary North, the director of curriculum development for the Ron Paul curriculum and a former research assistant to the congressman during his time in office.

By the end of the curriculum, Mr. North said, your child should be able to do the following: speak in public and speak confidently; write effectively; run a website; operate a YouTube channel; understand mathematics and have mastered other skills, including an understanding of freedom, liberty and the foundations of the American government and economy.

On the curriculum website, Mr. Paul also offers his own 100 percent money-back guarantee if parents arent satisfied with the courses.

I am confident that most students will see the value of it. But no one can please everyone, as I discovered in Congress, Mr. Paul said.

Parents can enroll their children beginning on Sept. 2, according to the website.

Ron Paul Launches Homeschool Curriculum to Teach Biblical Principles to K-12 Students

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul gestures as he speaks at a rally in Golden Valley, Minnesota, February 7, 2012.

April 8, 2013|4:22 pm

Gary North, director of the Ron Paul Curriculum, said he and the three-time presidential candidate believe there's a "tremendous need" for a homeschool curriculum that offers a history of liberty, as well as liberty's rivals; a thorough understanding of the Austrian school of economics; and a program that is based on primary sourced documents, as opposed to textbooks, which "dumb down the material."

In the introductory video, North explains that the curriculum will include a series of online lectures and reading assignments that allow students to work at their own pace, and will also foster an environment where students can teach each other about learned concepts. The curriculum, for which there are no textbooks, does require students to write a weekly essay starting in the fifth grade. North also noted that unlike traditional school environments, the Ron Paul Curriculum doesn't include "busy work," and it doesn't "waste the students' time."

The curriculum requires studentsto post their essay entries on a blog page for parents to review; and students are required to create their own YouTube channels, as well as learn about video production, website design and Internet marketing.

According to Tom Woods, a New York Times best-selling author and Ludwig von Mises Institute senior fellow who will be among the instructors for the high school curriculum, the program doesn't only "teach from a different point of view," or "teach material that no other school or curriculum offers," but according to his websitethe curriculum "also emphasizes oral and written communication, so that students will be able to spread and defend their ideas effectively."

Woods, who said his role will be to teachhigh school courses in Western civilization, the U.S. Constitution, government and the history of American wars, explained that the course schedule is "centered around a 36-week schedule, five lessons (25 minutes each), per week per course."

The Ron Paul Curriculum website states that high school students can expect to spend "90 minutes per day per course: lectures and reading."
