Robotic Russian Supply Ship Leaves Space Station

Posted: February 9, 2013 at 11:48 am

An unmanned Russian cargo ship undocked from the International Space Station Saturday (Feb. 9) to make way for a fresh delivery of supplies for the six astronauts living on the orbiting laboratory next week.

The trash-filled Progress 48 supply ship undocked from the space station's Russian Pirs docking port at 8:15 a.m. EST (1315 GMT) and was expected to intentionally destroy itself by burning up in Earth's atmosphere a few hours later.

"We just undocked a spaceship from our Space Station," Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, a flight engineer on the space station, wrote in a Twitter post Saturday. "The Progress robot ship is loaded with trash, to burn up like a meteorite in 3.5 hrs."

The departure of Progress 48 clears a parking spot for the next Russian cargo ship to use when it launches toward the International Space Station on Monday (Feb. 11). That spacecraft, the Progress 50 supply ship, will launch from the Central Asian spaceport of Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 9:41 a.m. EST (1441 GMT on Monday, though it will late evening at the launch site. Russia's Progress cargo ships are vital spacecraft that have helped keep astronauts stocked with food, clothing and other vital supplies during their six-month missions.

Like recent Progress missions to the space station, the flight of Progress 50 will last just six hours. The spacecraft is due to dock at the space station at 3:40 p.m. EST (2040 GMT) after four orbits of Earth. The flight plan is faster way for Progress ships to reach the station. Before it was implemented, Progress flights took two days to reach the space station, much like Russia's manned Soyuz space capsule flights. [Space Station's Robot Cargo Ship Fleet (Photos)]

Progress 50 will deliver nearly 2.9 tons of supplies for the space station's Expedition 34 crew, which includes three Russian cosmonauts, two American astronauts and Hadfield, who represents the Canadian Space Agency. The new cargo ship will deliver about 764 pounds (346 kilograms) of rocket propellant, 110 pounds (50 kg) of oxygen and air, 926 pounds (420 kg) of water and 3,000 pounds (1,360 kg) of spare parts, science equipment and other supplies, NASA officials said.

The Russian Federal Space Agency's three-module Progress spacecraft are similar in appearance to its crew-carrying Soyuz spacecraft. Both vehicles have orbital and propulsion modules, but the Progress spacecraft does not have a crew return capsule in its middle. Instead, it has another cargo module to carry propellant for the space station's maneuvers.

Since Progress cargo ships are not designed to return to Earth, they are regularly filled with tons of trash and unneeded items, and then sent to burn up in the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean. Robotic resupply ships for the station built by Europe and Japan also meet the same fate.

The American unmanned Dragon cargo ships built by the private spaceflight company SpaceX, which flew to the space station twice in 2012, are designed to re-enter the atmosphere and can return science experiments and other gear to Earth.

NASA will broadcast live views of Monday's Progress 50 spacecraft launch and docking via NASA TV. You can watch the Progress 50 spacecraft live on SPACE.com here, courtesy of NASA's feed.

DNA test may prove inmate's innocence

Posted: at 11:47 am

CHEYENNE -- Results of a DNA test may exonerate a man who has served more than 20 years in prison for aggravated burglary and sexual assault.

In December, attorney Aaron Lyttle filed a motion on behalf of inmate Andrew J. Johnson to test DNA found in the victims sexual assault kit.

The state didnt object to the motion, and it was approved by Laramie County District Judge Thomas Campbell on Friday.

The DNA was left at the district court after Johnsons trial and never has been tested. If the seminal fluid on the swab doesnt match him, he may be found innocent.

At the end of the day, we expect it to show who the real perpetrator is, Lyttle said.

He is associated with the Rocky Mountain Innocence Center, a non-profit group that works on correcting and preventing convictions of innocent people in Utah, Nevada and Wyoming.

According to the motion, Johnson was convicted in 1989 following a jury trial and sentenced to life in prison. Even after the state Supreme Court affirmed the conviction, Johnson maintained his innocence.

He said that on June 10, 1989, he went to a bar in Cheyenne and met an acquaintance. The two kissed, hugged and danced before deciding to go to other bars.

Before doing so, Johnson said, they went to the womans apartment to look for her ID. While there they smoked marijuana. He used his ID to roll two joints and left the card at the apartment, documents say.

The two left and went to several bars. At an after-hours club, Johnson said the woman vomited in the parking lot because of how much she drank, and he went inside to get towels.

DNA led police to mansion murder suspects

Posted: at 11:47 am

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- The Santa Clara County District Attorney's released documents Friday that offer new details on the home invasion murder of Monte Sereno millionaire Raveesh Ravi Kumra.

Portions of the papers read like an episode of CSI. In them, county criminalists and Los Gatos crime scene technicians explain how and where they found DNA linking the three suspects being held for the murder of Kumra and offer details on the involvement of a 22-year-old prostitute.

Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Kevin Smith, who is prosecuting the case, said: "There is DNA for the three males charged with this murder. Their DNA was present at the scene of the murder if not on the body itself," he said.

Smith says crime scene technicians and county criminalists found one suspect's DNA on tape that was used to bind Kumra and his wife. Another suspect's DNA was found underneath Kumra's fingernails. And the third suspect left behind a glove which contained his DNA. The evidence led to a quick arrest.

Smith says 22-year-old Raven Dixon, who has been charged as an accessory and is involved with prostitution, knew all three suspects. The suspects are members of Oakland gangs Ghost Town and Money Team.

"She absolutely has gang ties. While maybe not a member herself, she is involved with people who are in it. Her pimp is a member of Ghost Town, which is one of the two gangs in Oakland that have united to commit these types of home invasion robberies," Smith said.

Smith says Dixon is also childhood friends with women whose brothers are gang members. This evidence flies in the face of what Dixon, through her attorney Denise Zingale, claimed Wednesday.

Zingale claims that Dixon does not know the suspects and consequently could not have harbored them.

While the district attorney wants to try all four together, Zingale has been trying to separate Dixon's charge of accessory to murder in the case from the other three suspects on the claim of Dixon not knowing them.

A judge will decide on February 14 whether prosecutors can tie all four together in one case. Prosecutors are also expected to ask for a gang enhancement. All four suspects are expected to enter a plea on that day.

Although each of these individuals is plagued with sensitive and easily irritated skin, there are different types of eczema. A few of the most common diagnoses made are outlined and briefly reviewed below. Atopic Dermatitis Atopic Dermatitis is the most common type of eczema. Luckily, the condition is rarely constant. Instead, those who suffer from this type of eczema experience outbreaks or flare-ups. Trigger factors, which may include certain foods and chemical irritations, are the leading cause of atopic dermatitis. Patients who determine their trigger factors and work to eliminate them tend to experience fewer and less severe flare-ups. Contact Eczema Contact eczema is similar to atopic dermatitis, but it results in a localized reaction. A common cause of a contact eczema outbreak is direct skin contact with chemicals. For example, some women may experience flare-ups on their risks, hands, or face after applying makeup. Although anyone can suffer from contact eczema, those with a history of allergies are more prone. Seborrheic Eczema Seborrheic eczema, like other forms of the condition, is an inflammation of the skin ...
