Jack Pettis and His Pets -- Doin #39; the New Low Down, Fox-trot from: Lew Leslie #39;s Blackbirds of 1928 (McHugh -- Fields) Victor 1928 (USA) NOTE: Jack PETTIS - American saxophonist, jazz pioneer. Born about 1891 in Illinois, full name was John Baber Pettis. He was self-taught on the C-sax and as teenager, he worked with Elmer Schoebel and Paul Mares. In 1922-23 he played and recorded with a New Orleans Rhythm Kinhs and two years later he joined the famous Ben Bernie #39;s band. It #39;s Jack Pettis who makes an impressive sax-solo in "Sweet Georgia Brown", in one of three historical short sound movies od Bernie #39;s orchestra in 1925. These films were made in the De Forrest photo-recording technique, which -- in spite of superb sound quality, that was achieved by this method -- was abandoned to give way to Vitaphone sound recording system. In 1926, Jack Pettis began performing as leader of his own band, using different label titles (The Whoopee Makers, Irving Mills #39; Hotsy Tots Gang, Jack Pettis and His Pets). Among Pettis #39; sidemen were Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang, Tommy Dorsey, Jack Teagarden, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman. He also wrote or co-wrote several catchy tunes including "St. Louis Shuffle" (later recorded by Fletcher Henderson), "Freshman Hop," "Sweetest Melody" and "A Bag O #39; Blues." After 1930, Jack Pettis #39; carreer started fading. He made only one more appearance on record and by 1940 he completely vanishes (apparently, he died in age of 50). Liberty Universitys Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society chapter has earned the 2012 National Order of the Torch Award, ranking it among a select group of elite institutions nationwide.

Only five other universities received the award this year, including Duke University, the University of Maryland, the University of Texas (Austin), Georgia State University, and the University of Texas (El Paso).

The award requires the club to submit a comprehensive report to show it meets all 13 rigorous standards. Libertys chapter was recognized especially for its engagement in community outreach, including its work with the Lynchburg Jubilee Center for at-risk youths, gathering Thanksgiving baskets for families in need, coordinating a Teddy Bear Drive for the pediatric unit at the local hospital, donating care packages for Hope for the Homestead to aid area families at Christmas time, and supporting Libertys Students Behind Our Soldiers program.

Preparing our entry for the Order of the Torch Award was an excellent project to encourage us to work together as a club, said Sarah Lynn Compton, Libertys 2011-12 ALD vice president. Members and officers wrote articles, took pictures, and came up with the final design for our entry. It provided our society with a tremendous opportunity to showcase the various projects we had been involved in that year.

In addition to the Order of the Torch, Brian Mauldin, Libertys 2011-12 chapter president, received a $1,000 2012 National ALD Trow Scholarship Award and Dr. Marilyn Gadomski, a professor of psychology and a chapter faculty advisor, received one of five Executive Directors Awards at the National ALD Leadership Conference in San Antonio, Texas, Oct. 19-21.

Alpha Lambda Delta, founded in 1924 at the University of Illinois, is an honors society that recognizes the achievement of first-year students. Today, there are more than 235 chapters nationwide. Membership is open to full-time freshmen who earn a scholastic average of 3.5 or better at a four-year college/university. Libertys chapter began in 1986 and has since initiated nearly 2,500 members.

Sandrea Williamson, a member of the ALD National Council, presented the award to Libertys chapter in the Grand Lobby of Arthur S. DeMoss Learning Center on Friday, Oct. 26.

You all have contributed to the success and truly understand the purpose of Alpha Lambda Delta, Williamson said. Those of you who were initiated last spring and the spring before that have passed your torches on into the world. We encourage you to continue to do that and be role models for those that come behind you. You are setting a standard for the campus; you are setting an example for our colleagues.

Liberty last received this honor in 1993.

Liberty University chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society earns national recognition

The Statue of Liberty is closed again. It shut down Monday as a result of superstorm Sandy, a day after its grand reopening.

"Due to conditions created by Hurricane Sandy, Statue of Liberty National Monument will be closed until further notice," the alert on the National Park Service website reads.

The website gives no further detail, but a message on the Statue of Liberty's Facebook page reads:

"The Statue of Liberty National Monument, encompassing both Liberty and Ellis Islands, will be CLOSED through Saturday, November 3rd. Please refer to our FB page and our Twitter feed @StatueLibrtyNPS for information regarding plans for Sunday. Our maintenance crews have a huge challenge in pumping water and clearing debris from the islands, but the conditions at the screening facilities in Battery Park, NY, and Liberty State Park, NJ, will also affect operations."

In a storm-damage report published by the National Park Service Wednesday, the agency said of the situation on Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island: "All electrical and mechanicals on Ellis Island are underwater; a fuel tank has been dislodged. Liberty Island may have lost all high voltage equipment."

The statue had just reopened its interior Sunday after a year-long, $30 million renovation. Sunday was the statue's 126th birthday.
