Futurist Ray Kurzweil on smartphones, AI, and the human brain

Posted: November 12, 2012 at 11:41 pm

The inventor and author speaks onstage at the Techonomy conference in Tucson about his new book on human thought and the themes that stem from it.

Kurzweil spoke to Techonomy founder David Kirkpatrick about his new book on human thought, "How to Create a Mind," and the various themes that stem from it. Their talk was varied and at times scattered -- with a topic this big, you can imagine the temptation of tangents -- but Kurzweil had a few choice things to say along the way.

The highlights:

"I'm very optimistic [about the next five years] because there's a lot of evidence that not only hardware is progressing exponentially but software [too]," Kurzweil said.

IBM's Watson and its performance on the television game show "Jeopardy!" is "viscerally impressive" in that people don't understand how truly remarkable an advancement it is. (Why? Because it's a computer coming to conclusions on its own, rather than searching a database and reiterating data stored within.

We are so integrated with connected technology today that "during that one-day SOPA strike, I felt like part of my brain had gone on strike." (SOPA legislation threatened the autonomy of content providers on the Internet.)

Holding up a Google Android-based smartphone, Kurzweil said that "these will be the size of blood cells by 2030."

IBM's Watson and Google's autonomous car will become deeply integrated with how we live. "That kind of system will become a reliable tool that people will become dependent on," he said.

The very human capabilities of being funny or sexy? "These are not sideshows to human intelligence," Kurzweil said. "That's the cutting edge of human intelligence."

Artificially intelligent agents can be considered human "once they write a novel," Kurzweil said. "They will be convincing in their ability to do human-like things."

Yellowcake - Charybdis
Yellowcake playing #39;Charybdis #39; by Sander Baan Live in Atelier Il Sole in Cantina, Groningen, 3 November 2012. Yellowcake are: Ziv Taubenfeld - Bass Clarinet Sander Baan - Tenor Saxophone Dave Rock - Drums Jonathan Nagel - Double Bass It was in September 2011, when four musicians gathered to do something different. The quartet started out experimenting with different ways to interpret jazz standard tunes with the desire to sound different every time, not set any certain style or mood. It was the concept to have a no concept, to rehearse bdquo;options", things which might happen, but not necessarily. As time passed by and rehearsal after rehearsal was made, the musicians grew artistically together very deeply and collected an almost endless amount of those bdquo;options", styles from dixieland to modern avant-garde, innumerous hits, kicks and cues. Also the instrumentation gives the band a lot of freedom: saxophone, bass clarinet, contrabass and drums - but no chordal instrument give the players a lot of harmonic freedom and yet possibilities to play counterpoint lines, chords or simply standard jazz. Now focusing on original compositions the quartet is heading towards complete freedom in a display of spontaneity exploring musical possibilities with the desire to make every performance unique and let happen whatever wants to happen. It might become the greatest concert you #39;ve ever heard, but of course, that #39;s just an option! Song for Syria (Damascus Road) - Best of Intentions - Johnny Geee
Song for Syria (Damascus Road) - (c) Johnny Gee on independent label Moreton Music http://www.moretonmusic.com Pre-release version From the upcoming debut solo album: Best of Intentions Johnny Gee (John Gynther) is a multi instrumentalist singer/songwriter based in Brisbane, Australia. His long awaited debut solo album comes after years playing and singing in bands around town. Best of Intentions is a varied collection of completely self produced songs, with John playing everything you can hear, from horns to guitars, drums to keys. This album is an eclectic mix of tunes with something for every listener. Keep an eye out for details of the album launch show. Song for Syria (Damascus Road) is a pre release single, indicative of the multi layered sounds on the forthcoming album Best of Intentions, which will be available on iTunes in the near future. With soundscapes reminiscent of Bon Iver, Gotye and Sigur Ros, Song for Syria is John #39;s response to the apparent intentional apathy that news media in the West demonstrate towards the terrible, tragic plight of so many caught up in the war in Syria. Thanks for listening, enjoy, Lyrics are below: Damascus road Bloodstained dirt Echoing cries of widows Blown away Born to die another day Syria Silent rockets fill the air With their loveless songs When will we hear your song? BDS Campaign in South Africa – Video

BDS Campaign in South Africa
The anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign has gained the attention of the South African government as it takes steps to highlight Israel #39;s illegal policies against the Palestinians. In recent years activists have achieved a number of successes including a National radio campaign for boycotting Israeli artists, Ben Gurion University academically, sending aid convoys to Gaza as well as planning to label products made in the occupied Palestinian land. These efforts have also been taken up by companies who now refuse to do business with the Zionist regime. In light of these developments, Israel has begun sending so-called "Peace Delegations" to South Africa to present itself as a tolerant, multicultural society which respects the rights of all. On this week #39;s INFocus, we will look into the various achievements by the broad coalition of activists campaigning for Palestinian freedom. We will also speak to the South African government on its policies toward the Zionist regime. TEKKEN 6 INFINITE ROULETTE GLITCH ARCADE BATTLE – Video

Posted: at 1:45 pm

TEKKEN 6 INFINITE ROULETTE GLITCH ARCADE BATTLE
TEKKEN 6 INFINITE ROULETTE GLITCH ARCADE BATTLE ========== Powering up my character in offline mode, i found an improvement to the Super Roulette glitch.. it lets you get all the secret hard to get items quicker like unlimited rage for each character, black auras and more impossible to get items that you normally can #39;t buy in the regular game =========== To do the infinite Roulette glitch, you first have to activate the regular Super Roulette glitch.. To do that, start up an offline Ghost battle, and then play until the 10th fight.. As long as you did not do this before with the character, it will always be a red line waiting above your health bar after the 9th fight.. So on the 10th fight, exit back to the Tekken menu, that will save the game and your red Roulette bar indicator =========== The next step is to go back into the fight, win and get LUCKY to appear.. if you fail and get money instead, just exit the game entirely when the next fight starts, go back to the X box home menu and load the entire game over, DO NOT EXIT TO TEKKEN MENU that saves the game!!!..Exit to the X box home screen instead..That way it does not save the game, and you can repeat your feat until you get LUCKY to appear ============ i #39;m not even sure which buttons stop the Roulette wheel, i was pressing all of them, but as soon as you get LUCKY to appear, you can unlock secret hard to get items like Aruas, infinite Rage for each character, and more!!! Then to top it all off, as long as you get a ...From:STARENATViews:1 0ratingsTime:20:01More inGaming
