It's probably politically incorrect to call them "sharp cookies," but we're going to do it anyway.

The seven exceptional Women of Distinction honored by Girl Scouts of Colorado at the 2012 Thin Mint Dinner are just that.

Dr. Jandel Allen Davis, Peg Bradley-Doppes, Juanita Chacon, Tricia Downing, Melba Johnston, Denise O'Leary and Maren Stewart all have used their smarts to succeed in fields ranging from medicine to athletics and to pave the way for others to do the same.

Or, as former Colorado first lady Jeannie Ritter pointed out: The honorees, like the

Davis practiced obstetrics and gynecology for 25 years before becoming vice president of government and external relations for Kaiser Permanente Colorado; Bradley-Doppes, vice chancellor of athletics and recreation at the University of Denver, is one of the few women in a senior leadership role for athletics at a top-rated university; and Chacon, a member of the RE/MAX Realty Hall of Fame, has volunteered on behalf of 27 nonprofit organizations that focus on children, education and women.

Downing is an elite wheelchair athlete and the first paraplegic woman to compete in an Ironman triathlon; Johnston has been a Girl Scouts volunteer since the 1970s; O'Leary serves on three corporate boards, is a former Stanford University trustee and was recently elected to the board of the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation; and Stewart, chair of the Aurora Economic Development Council board, is president/CEO of LiveWell Colorado.

Susan Knox and Katherine Peck chaired the Thin Mint Dinner, which also had the unusual twist of a menu based on Girl Scout cookies. Scott Skomal, executive chef at the Sheraton Denver Downtown, used Savannah Smiles in the parmesan tuille that was part of the salad course; Tagalongs in the mole sauce for the breast of chicken entree and Samoas in the layered ice cream-and-cookie dessert.

The record 550 guests were welcomed by Stephanie Foote, the chief executive at Girl Scouts of Colorado; emcees were Cheryl Preheim of 9News and Marcelo Balboa of the Colorado Rapids.

Why I’m No Longer a Feminist – Video

Why I #39;m No Longer a Feminist
Talking this afternoon on why I no longer refer to myself as a feminist (as of 2009 approximately) and what past involvement in the feminist movement ultimately taught me about it. The quote referenced came from Emily Bronte: "The tyrant grinds down his slaves and they don #39;t turn against him; they crush those beneath them." Erich Fromm, a 20-century German psychoanalyst, had much to say about freedom and destructiveness, spanning several books, and a short synopsis of his theories and writings can be found here: webspace.ship.edu I also referenced the Atheism+ forums as providing examples of ludicrous censorship upheld by the radical feminist community. Google it if you feel so inclined.From:ByeniaViews:6 1ratingsTime:13:28More inPeople Blogs

Threats to the First Amendment with Honorable Alex Kozinski and Eugene Volokh – Video

Threats to the First Amendment with Honorable Alex Kozinski and Eugene Volokh
On November 8, 2012, at the Luxe Hotel Sunset in Los Angeles, California, Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors presented Alex Kozinski, Chief Judge of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and Professor Eugene Volokh, UCLA Professor of Law and founder and coauthor of The Volokh Conspiracy (www.volokh.com) who discussed threats to our First Amendment through attempts to limit freedom of speech and expression, hate speech, censorship and blasphemy. This was a rare opportunity to gain insight and clarity with such distinguished speakers into one of the most controversial subjects of our day. There is no other nation in the world with the First Amendment. It mandates our freedoms of speech, worship, press, assembly and petition. There are forces that are attacking the First Amendment, however, in ways both obvious and subtle. Freedom of expression is a cornerstone of democratic rights and freedoms and is essential in enabling democracy to work and public participation in decision-making. Citizens cannot exercise their right to vote effectively or take part in public decision-making if they do not have free access to information and ideas and are not able to express their views freely. Freedom of expression is thus not only important for individual dignity but also to participation, accountability and democracy. Violations of freedom of expression often go hand in hand with other violations, in particular the right to freedom of association and assembly. A short background on ...From:CJHSLAorgViews:4 0ratingsTime:01:36:47More inNews Politics

Google Blocked in China to Lower CCP #39;s "Meeting" Tension
Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com The 18th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) just began and is expected to last about a week. Media reported that Google asserts its search engine and other web services in China have been blocked in large areas. Associated Press (AP) said that the cut off started from 5 pm on November 9, Beijing time. Some of China #39;s netizens confirmed failure in unblocking CCP #39;s web censorship. And the Chinese keyword of "the 18th Party Congress" has been filtered on China #39;s search engine. The BBC has reported that Google #39;s Transparency Report showed a sharp drop in web traffic from November 9. Google services in China became inaccessible, said the BBC. GreatFire.org, Chinese web-censorship monitoring group, affirmed the news in a blog last Friday. Google #39;s search engine, email, and other internet services were all cut off in China. The AP stated that "at a politically sensitive time", "restricting access to Google #39;s search engine might make it more difficult for people in China to find information about the candidates vying to steer the ruling party." Li Yuanlong, former Guizhou Party newspaper journalist, says that anti-censorship software recently did not work. Li Yuanlong: "Neither Freegate nor UltraSurf proxy can work. Apparently, the CCP has blocked the web for the 18th Party Congress. This meeting has actually put the regime under great tension. It fears social turmoil could occur at this critical ...From:ChinaForbiddenNewsViews:60 3ratingsTime:03:25More inNews Politics

A day after China #39;s 18th Party Congress opened, Google says that several of its online services to the country were blocked.
