Cafe Sci: A Holy Grail of Bioinformatics (Part 4 of 4)
Speaker: Peter Karp, Director, Bioinformatics Research Group, Artificial Intelligence Center at SRI International Date: September 11, 2012 In the early days of the Human Genome Project, there was significant skepticism that the project would produce useful information. Yes, it would produce plenty of information about our DNA, but how would we extract meaning from all of that data? Identifying the genes within a genome and predicting their biological functions were viewed as extreme challenges at the time. We have come a long way since then: in the last 20 or so years, the wealth of resulting genetic information has transformed biological science, with bioinformatics mdash; the intersection of biology and computing -- playing a pivotal role in processing the large amounts of data produced by genome projects. Thanks to the efforts of many researchers, we can now use computer programs to generate a quantitative metabolic model from a sequenced genome. Scientists are using these models to advance scientific understanding and to accelerate drug discovery and biofuels development. This process is imperfect--the resulting models contain errors and omissions, and require significant manual intervention for high accuracy -- but the models have significant predictive value. Surprisingly, bioinformatics has achieved what might have been held up as a "holy grail" of the field, before the goal was even articulated! Dara O Briain #39;s Science Club S01E01 | 720p
This first episode in a new six-part science series presented by Dara O Briain takes a look at the weird and wonderful world of reproduction and inheritance. Dara chats to leading biologist Professor Steve Jones and finds out how the bicycle did more to improve the human immune system than any other invention, comedian Ed Byrne discovers just how closely related he is to a Neanderthal and materials scientist and engineer Mark Miodownik creates a DNA cocktail with the help of some strong Polish vodka. Dara is also joined by neuroscientist Tali Sharot, who explores the cutting-edge science of epigenetics and reveals how exercise can change your DNA. Science journalist Alok Jha asks if the human genome project was oversold and the studio audience are put to the test in the elusive search for attraction. Combining lively and in-depth studio discussion with exploratory films and on-the-spot reports, Dara O Briain #39;s Science Club takes a single subject each week and examines it from lots of different and unexpected angles, from sex to extinction, Einstein to space exploration and brain chemistry to music. It brings some of the world #39;s foremost thinkers together to share their ideas on everything, from how to avoid asteroid impact to whether or not we are still evolving.From:MrKanjarifyViews:0 4ratingsTime:58:57More inScience Technology

Whole Genome Sequencing and You
This video is about whole genome sequencing. What is a genome? What are the basics of how whole genome sequencing works? What can you find out about yourself from getting your genome sequenced? And what are the potential benefits and risks? You might be considering getting your genome sequenced for clinical, research or personal reasons. Or you might just be curious and want to learn a bit more about this technology. This video was developed to help you understand a bit more about what whole genome sequencing is, and what it could mean for you. It was developed by researchers at Mount Sinai #39;s Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences and Department of Emergency Medicine with funding from the Charles Bronfman Institute for Personalized Medicine, with valuable input from several community consultants, patients and others from around the Mount Sinai community. bull; Visit the Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences: ow.ly bull; Visit the Department of Emergency Medicine: ow.ly bull; Visit the Charles Bronfman Institute for Personalized Medicine: ow.lyFrom:MountSinaiSchoolViews:5 3ratingsTime:10:41More inEducation

Neanderthals Deciphered
Annual Speaker Series on Human Origins Lecture Recorded at the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences on October 9, 2012. Neanderthals were the first fossil hominins discovered and, since then, have been the most studied. However, it is only in the last two decades that entirely new techniques have made new and fascinating insights into their biology and behavior possible. Beyond their odd anatomy, we are now able to explore the mechanisms of their birth and growth, the way their brains developed, and the chemical signals left in their bones from their diet. The decoding of their genome has opened a new era in Paleoanthropology. Ultimately, understanding the rise and the fall of the Neanderthals will help us to elucidate the unrivaled evolutionary success of our own species. ----- Dr. Jean-Jacques Hublin Director, Department of Human Evolution, Max Planck Institute Dr. Jean-Jacques Hublin is currently a Professor at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig (Germany), where he serves as the Director of the Department of Human Evolution. Initially his research focused on the origin and evolution of Neanderthals and he has proposed an accretion model for the emergence of the Neanderthal lineage that roots it in the time of the Mid-Pleistocene. He developed the use of medical and virtual imaging in the reconstruction and study of fossil hominids. He has led field operations in North Africa, Spain and France. ----- National Sponsor: Wells Fargo Bank Local ...From:TheLeakeyFoundationViews:1 0ratingsTime:01:13:36More inScience Technology
